Center for the Arts this month.
Issue 7, August
July wrap-‐up What a busy month! July brought challenges and rewards as we continue to grow and offer more to the community. We presented two free community events, and attended the Pennsy Trail Art Festival and Fortville Bastille Day! The building is relatively quiet during this month, so we worked on cleaning
and repairs while we could.
We also hosted call-‐out meetings for Ten West Academy, which is off and running. We have a few students attending now and hope to pick up more
as the semester goes along.
Even though we are having record heat and drought, a couple severe storms caused damage to Ten West. We lost our Internet due to a power surge, as well as a few electronics that were not on surge protectors. We will be
working to repair these services soon.
We look forward to August, as it will be a little more laid back!

Dancin’ the Night Away
We decided just a few months ago that National Dance Day would be a good event to celebrate at Ten West. We thought a small concert on the parking lot would be fun. After a month of planning and some major exposure, the event grew to an all-‐afternoon dance event. It was topped off with a big flashmob and music from

local acts. Entertainers included James Winston, Joy Mills, The Oak and Acorn Project, Jessie Brewer, and the Ten West Steel Drum Band. We brought in vendors and had entertainment including group dances and video games. A few days before the event, an anonymous donor donated a very large stage that
Even though the terrorist attacks on the United States are now eleven years in the past, we feel that it is still an important day to honor the heroes that saved lives, and the lives lost, at ground zero, the pentagon and in the field in Pennsylvania. Ten West will host Fortville Remembers: A Patriotic Tribute on September 11 at 7pm. This free concert will
We recommend attendees arrive early to get a good seat for a concert that will truly honor a tragic day, and inspire hope for the future. For more information, visit www.tenwestcenter.org/tribute

Bastille Day Success!

Ten West Center for the Arts was heavily involved with Fortville
Bastille Day this year. Our day started at 10am when we hauled out
over 800 pounds of sound equipment! It looked like rain, so we
covered everything in plastic. Thankfully, the weather held off. Later
in the day we brought out a vendor tent and sold T-‐Shirts and
hamburgers as well as provided information about Ten West. But we
didn’t stop there! Later in the evening, the Ten West Steel Drum Band
took the stage and entertained a very enthusiastic crowd! Finally, the
Ten West Community band played La Marseilles, the French national
anthem, as a lantern procession snaked through Landmark Park. It
was a great day and everyone had fun!

A Fabulous Concert!
The Bay Street Brassworks brass quintet paid Ten West a visit this month. The performers in the group are all professors or professionals in their fields and played phenomenally. The ensemble worked with us to put the show on for free to the public. They understood our mission of bringing the Arts to kids (and parents and the community) in an affordable way. They played patriotic pieces like God Bless the USA and Olympic Theme and Fanfare. We sent out posters and flyers to the community in hopes of a good turn out for the event. We can seat 150 and there were about 40 people in attendance. “These people don’t know what they’re missing!” said Greg Mankey, a Fortville citizen and business owner in reference to all the empty seats. We did receive word from Bay Street that at their next performance, the crowd was twice the size, but was not responding, and did not interact half as much as Fortville did. The group was so fantastic, that we are bringing them back again and featuring them in Fortville Remembers: A Patriotic Tribute on September 11 at 7pm. That concert will be free and open to the public as well. For more information about Bay Street Brassworks, visit them on the web at www. baystreetbrassworks.com
Volunteers are what make Ten West possible. Without them, we would be nothing! We would like to recognize Riley Miller of Fortville for his dedication to the vision we’ve had for Ten West. He has been with us for over 4 years, and logged over 18,200 service hours. If we had to pay someone, even at minimum wage, his earnings would be near $136,000. Miller attends Purdue University and is studying mathematics. He is training to be an officer in the U.S Air Force. If you see him around town, give him a big thank you for all of the hard work he does for his town and his country.
