Summer 2012 has proved a particularly thrilling one for a number of reasons, and we are privileged to have been a part of it.

In June, our three Queens gathered in Southampton to pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee. Our celebration was one of the largest outside of London, and it was quite an occasion, filled with Union Jacks, fireworks, pomp and ceremony, plenty of traditional British drizzle and so much cheer.

We also saw the first Cunard weddings at sea! See page 11 for pictures of the newlyweds.

On 23 May, Princess Anne was welcomed aboard Queen Elizabeth in Southampton. She attended in her capacity as Patron of Sea Vision UK to launch a new maritime education scheme. Among those greeting the princess were Captain Julian Burgess and President and Managing Director of Cunard Line, Peter Shanks.

After an enthusiastic reception from the ship’s crew in the Grand Lobby, she was taken on a tour of the ship, before signing the visitors’ book and unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion. Also in attendance were the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, and Shipping Minister, The Hon Mike Penning.

Sea Vision was established in 2003; it’s an ongoing campaign to enthuse young people about the diverse opportunities of the maritime and marine sector. The new programme launched by the Princess Royal is called SEA (Skills, Education and Awareness) – it strives to connect young people with maritime careers.

The sector employs over 531,000 people directly and indirectly, contributing more than £26.5 billion each year to the UK economy.

Peter Shanks later spoke of the ‘wonderful reaction from both our ship’s company and our guests’. He said it was a reminder of ‘just how much warmth there is towards the Royal Family here in the UK’.

President Bush was joined by his wife Barbara, daughter Doro and granddaughter Gigi, on a voyage which he told Peter Shanks he had been looking forward to for a long time. ‘He has been talking about nothing else for months’, said Barbara.

Our other 2,620 guests were enchanted to travel in the presence of an ex-President, and the Bush family delighted in the full Cunard experience. They relaxed at Canyon Ranch, dined at Todd English, watched shows at the Royal Court Theatre and took part in one of our new Apple iStudy classes. George Bush said he and his family had ‘enjoyed the voyage from its beginning’ and paid tribute to ‘amazing crew and staff’.

It was a great pleasure for Cunard to welcome George Bush Senior and his family aboard Queen Mary 2 for an exceptional journey across the Atlantic.

Despite the early arrival, thousands lined the shoreline to witness the three largest Cunarders ever built arrive together in their home port of Southampton for the very first time. Queen Mary 2, our flagship, led the way just before 5am, followed by Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. Once the latter two berthed, Queen Mary 2 bearing the message “Congratulations Ma’am” passed each of her sisters in turn. This created a three bow formation, while crew lined the foredecks and the ships’ whistles sounded in salute.

During the day, the City of Southampton had staged a free concert, dance performances, food stalls and a funfair. The three ships held court at the waterfront.As darkness set in, each looked stunning lit up, as incredible bursts of fireworks showered down through the sky overhead. Finally the ships left in procession at around 11pm before heading their separate ways.

The weather hampered a planned display from the Red Arrows. That didn’t stop them putting on a performance aboard Queen Elizabeth though – pictured on page 5.

60 years on the throne. Well, maybe small is not the right word for being part of one of the largest celebrations outside London. And it was quite the occasion when our three Queens gathered in Southampton, two of them – Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth – of course named by our monarch.

STREET PARTY MID-ATLANTICThe length and breadth of the British Isles, local communities entered into the Jubilee spirit by organising street parties over the four-day bank holiday weekend. Being halfway across the Atlantic, heading towards a rendezvous with her sisters, was no reason for Queen Mary 2 and her guests not to join in the festivities.

Guests witnessed the Thames Diamond Jubilee River Pageant with live screenings in the theatres, whilst large areas of Queen Mary 2’s public areas were adorned with Union Jacks as far as the eye could see.

As the pageant neared its finale, there was a fitting reading in the Grand Lobby – “The Thames London 2012” by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Keith Maynard, our flagship’s Entertainment Director, then declared the street party well and truly under way and the doors of the Deck 2 Grand Hallway swung open to reveal an incredible banquet. Tables were piled high with sandwiches, sausage rolls, mini Victoria sponges and red white and blue cupcakes topped with flags. Amongst it all were intricate ice sculptures and regal floral arrangements.

Later that evening, the chefs rightly took the applause in the Britannia Restaurant for their amazing efforts. Then everyone stood as the strains of the National Anthem filled the room, quickly followed by a heartfelt and very loud three cheers for Her Majesty! Naturally, there was still one final celebration – a Jubilee Ball. Not only was it a magnificent end to a wonderful day, those present also helped raise nearly $2,000 for The Prince’s Trust.

For an inspired Christmas gift for someone special, or even a treat for yourself, a short voyage is the perfect opportunity to climb aboard for a leisurely getaway. You can join Queen Mary 2 or Queen Elizabeth for two nights to or from Hamburg, a dynamic and incredibly beautiful city, or alternatively join Queen Mary 2 on a four night voyage to the Channel Islands and Belgium.

While in Hamburg, there is much exploring to be done. Make sure you schedule a trip to The Rathaus, the neo-renaissance town hall which is topped with a 160-foot tower. Your next stop might be the St Michaelis Church - its copper-covered Baroque spire has long been a landmark for ships sailing along the River Elbe, and its viewing platform offers magnificent views.

You can work up quite a thirst by shopping your way around the boutiques of the Alster Arkaden, so plan regular pitstops in Hamburg’s excellent bars and restaurants.

Music lovers gravitate towards the Indra Club where, in August 1960, the Fab Four first played together as The Beatles. There’s also the fabulous Elbphilharmonie concert hall, which you’ll pass on your ship – it’s well worth seeing up close. If you’re feeling adventurous, Hamburg is within easy reach of Berlin – 90 minutes by train, so you could add the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the Wall to your sightseeing list.

DignitariesCunard’s association with the

British Royal family dates back to 1859

when Queen Victoria, on the recommendation

of the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, conferred

a baronetcy on Samuel Cunard for his services to the

country during the Crimean War.

The first recorded visit by a senior royal to a Cunard ship

took place almost a century ago when, in July 1913, His

Majesty King George V and Her Majesty Queen Mary visited

the four-funnelled Mauretania in her home port of Liverpool.

Since then every reigning monarch has visited or travelled on

Cunard ships, as have a great many other senior royals.

Most notable, of course, have been the

Royal ship launches:

- Queen Mary (1934) - Queen Elizabeth (1938) - Caronia (1947) - Carinthia (1955)- Queen Elizabeth 2 (1967)- Queen Mary 2 (2004)- Queen Victoria (2007)- Queen Elizabeth (2010)

Some visits were not actually planned and perhaps the most

‘interesting’ Royal visit took place

in 1933 when The Prince of

Wales, later King Edward VIII,

unexpectedly visited Berengaria,

berthed in Southampton, with

friends in the early hours of the morning. When Captain Grattidge enquired why he had

chosen the empty Berengaria,

the Prince of Wales simply said

how difficult it was to find quiet places where he could relax and be with friends.

While not quite as long as that with the Royal Family,

Cunard’s association with American Presidents is a

significant one as well.

When George Bush Snr boarded Queen Mary 2 in 2012

it was in fact his third visit to the Cunard flagship

having visited the vessel when she was in Athens as an

accommodation ship for the 2004 Olympics, and he and

Mrs Bush visited Queen Mary 2 when she was anchored

off St John (Newfoundland) in 1995. Then they were

entertained to a full-service lunch with waiters on the

ship’s Bridge - a dining first for Cunard!

George Bush Jnr travelled on QE2 from Lisbon to Southampton

in October 1990 while in years past Franklyn D Roosevent and

Theodore Roosevelt were regulars on board Queen Mary and

Queen Elizabeth.

Perhaps one of the finest tributes ever paid to a Cunard ship

came from President Franklyn D. Roosevelt who sailed several

times on the first Mauretania. He is said to have wept when

he heard she was being retired in 1935 and wrote:

“Neither size nor speed alone could have given Mauretania

her fame. That rested on something more secure and

intangible – on her personality; for Mauretania was a

ship with a fighting heart. If ever there was a ship

which

possessed a thing called a ‘soul’, the Mauretania did… very

few ships have earned the right, and the Mauretania has

earned it, to be remembered 100 years hence”. Praise indeed!

On Sunday 29 April, Denise Holding and Barry Maloney became the first couple to marry aboard one of Cunard’s Queens.

Their voyage was a double celebration, as it marked Kenneth’s 80th birthday as well as the start of married life for the couple after 32 happy years together. The ceremony took place in the Admiral’s Lounge, on the way to Sardinia, during which Captain Julian Burgess pronounced them husband and wife. Then the ship’s photographers captured memories of their big day, which they’ve been kind enough to share.

Queen Elizabeth hosted her first wedding during a voyage around the Mediterranean, when Kenneth and Edi tied the knot on May 27.

The bride and groom from Lancashire tied the knot after 28 years together – and revealed it was the chance to exchange vows on their favourite ship, Queen Mary 2, that made this the right moment. Captain Kevin Oprey conducted the intimate service en route to New York.

Denise recalled: “Having our photos taken around the ship made us feel like celebrities, especially when other guests on board kept congratulating and applauding us everywhere we went. It was like a fairytale.”

There are many things that make Cunard special, but our ability to pull out the stops to get the very best entertainment and performers aboard really sets us apart. We are extremely proud of our award-winning Cunard Insights on board enrichment programme, just as we are of our exclusive partnership with the National Symphony Orchestra.

To cross the Atlantic on Queen Mary 2 is always an iconic experience, punctuated

by themed dances in the largest ballroom at sea, white-gloved afternoon tea, and plenty of cultural enrichment. But to be played to by this accomplished orchestra is a treat for all of us.

Select members of the orchestra will perform two concerts – one which will celebrate American music and another which will provide a glittering traditional finale to the voyage, ahead of your arrival in New York.

We like to preserve at least part of the surprise, but can confirm that the line-up for the guest-led chorus will include huge, cheering numbers such as ‘Rule, Britannia!’, ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. If the summer’s festivities have boosted your patriotism, this is the voyage for you. Those guests keen to sing their hearts out will have access to song information in advance of the sailing.

On 14 October, the National Symphony Orchestra, under conductorship of the excellent Anthony Inglis, will join us on our westbound Transatlantic Crossing. Along the way, they’ll present two world-class classical performances. Perhaps most excitingly, all guests will get to sing at the Last Night of the Cunard Proms.

artist has appeared more often at London’s Royal Albert Hall than Anthony Inglis. The esteemed conductor’s career is a busy, international one, which has involved appearances with many of the greatest orchestras in the world. Inglis dreamed of making a Transatlantic Crossing as a boy, and we are thrilled he will be joining us on board for a fourth time.

The film is made up of 3D scenes captured during performances at London’s Royal Opera House. The shipboard experience combines stunning music with the thrill of live staging and the closeness of a feature film. Rich, ripe green apple aromas with some hints of macadamia nuts and honey. Soft and rich, ripe, fruity palate, leading to a long, rounded finish. Ideal as a chilled aperitif, or with seafood.

Afternoon tea among the blooms

At sea, Cunard upholds the finest British traditions and once in a while, we relish the opportunity to do the same on land. In partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society and for the second year running, we’ve had the honour of being part of the world famous Hampton Court Palace Flower Show by sponsoring The Palace Tea Rooms.

The event’s theme was ‘World of Gardens’, ever so appropriate as many of these beautiful destinations are often visited by our liners, such as St Petersburg and Madeira. It was a pleasure meeting so many of our loyal guests that dropped by the Cunard marquee to say hello and enter the competition to win a voyage on board Queen Elizabeth! We look forward to welcoming the winners on board soon.

On two wheels for The Trust in 2012

Our employees, guests and friends always show great enthusiasm for helping the UK’s

disadvantaged young people turn their lives around, and this year they will get on their bikes once again to raise even more funds for The Trust. The ALL ABOARD team will be taking part in the Palace to Palace bike ride between Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle on 14 October. The 47 mile route takes in some quite impressive scenery, passing through Richmond Park, Bushey Park and Virginia Water, past red and fallow deer.

These days, the work of The Prince’s Trust is more important than ever, as they provide young people in the UK with work placements, training courses

and financial grants, helping thousands back into employment and education.

We really appreciate your continuous support and donations to this worthy cause and with your help we can really make a difference.

As many of you may already know, Cunard Line has an ongoing relationship with The Prince’s Trust that dates since the launch of Queen Victoria in December 2007. OuR ‘TOP SAILORS’ ROLL OF HONOuRWe’re very fortunate to have such loyal guests, and would like to introduce you to our newly initiated ‘Top Sailors’. One of these couples has clocked up a wonderful 2201 days at sea. We hope they’ve enjoyed each and every one of them. Thank you all and we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Mr and Mrs Williamson are our runners-up, as it were, having spent an impressive 2052 days aboard Cunard ships, over 55 voyages.

Mr and Mrs Ronald McIntyre from Gloucester, have joined us on 43 voyages and spent a total of 1068 days on board Cunard ships.

Mr and Mrs Frank Keeling from Bournemouth are at the top of this month’s charts – they have completed 40 voyages and 2201 days at sea.

Mr Stockwell completed 55 voyages and 1415 days on board.

Mr & Mrs Wilson from Newport in Wales have taken 28 voyages and spent 819 days on board.

Mrs Elizabeth Eastoe from Essex has spent 1358 days aboard our ships, over 56 voyages.

Lorraine Hitching named Warwick Bear after Commodore Ronald W. Warwick when she sailed on Queen Mary 2’s maiden Transatlantic Crossing. He has since travelled on all three Queens and wears his Cunard badges with

pride. He’ll be back on board Queen Elizabeth in September – if you see him, shake his paw!

have taken Transatlantic Crossings in both directions with their owners, loyal Cunarders Dan and Anne Lanier. The Laniers

live in Fort Lauderdale in Florida over the winter and in Castle Maine in Kerry,

Ireland during the summer – they ‘commute’ between the two on

Queen Mary 2. We look forward to welcoming all four guests back on board.

AMBASSADOR ABOARDciaran Ward, former chief electrical engineer, was the cunard World club ambassador on a recent cWc voyage. he re-joined Queen Mary 2 for this special westbound Transatlantic crossing.

Ciaran and his wife were able to join Captain Wells on the Bridge for departure. They also hosted the Captain’s Table and joined Britannia cocktail receptions, where they met several loyal Cunarders, not least Mr Richard Faber, the first guest to board Queen Mary 2 on her maiden voyage. The Wards also spoke with a Norwegian journalist, who was taken with Cunard’s devotion to tradition, and they attended the RADA production of The Merchant of Venice.

cheer to the Housekeeping team, who feel very lucky to have him. Whenever a guest needs assistance, Leo is first on the scene.

guests who were struggling to get into their stateroom, by taking the keys to the Purser’s Office, despite having work waiting in his area.

Allan Ballesteros MechanicWhen the flat work iron machine broke, we had piles of bed and restaurant linen

waiting to be processed. Allan gave his full attention and got things moving – he really saved the day.

Recently, while very busy with linen, he and his team washed 53 bags of bathrobes during the port of call in Stavanger.

Technical Maintenance TeamWe were two washing machines down and the strain on the laundry was immense. This team worked tirelessly through the day and night to get things up and running again.

As a last hurrah, we asked the crew to line Deck 7; senior officers stood to attention on the dockside. We then played ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ (John is a devoted Everton fan) as he walked down the gangway, and Queen Mary 2 sounded her whistle three times.

We bid adieu to a much-loved and

respected Hotel Manager in May, as

John Duffy retired after almost 47

years of service. John is recognised

and admired by guests and

colleagues alike, and has served

on two of The Most Famous

Ocean Liners In The World –

Queen Elizabeth 2 and

Queen Mary 2.

We wanted to give him the send-off he

deserved, and to give everyone the

opportunity to wish him the best, so

we held two farewells - one in the

Crew Mess in front of the ship’s

company, and another for senior

officers in the Atlantic Room. Later,

we gathered in Southampton,

where our Senior HR Manager

Frank Prowse paid tribute to him.

Three Queens glide away TogeTherAfter spending a brief period reunited at their home port, our three Queens set sail from Southampton in convoy on 13 July. Queen Elizabeth led the way, followed closely by Queen Victoria and then Queen Mary 2, before all heading off their separate ways. It was quite a dramatic sight, not least because it was the first time all three ocean liners have sailed together in daylight – so we were able to get some fantastic images and footage.
