Ocean City--Local artist NancyPalermo, known for her murals in theOcean City Library and throughout thecity, has created a watercolor painting tocelebrate the 50th Ocean City BoardwalkArt Show. The painting depicts the manytents of artwork seen each year as nearly100 artists exhibit their artwork the firstweekend in August on the Boardwalk.

Art is a meditation between concept and impulse,” stated

Françoise Gilot, a French painter and author. Art has always been a strong form of expression, and cur-rently Gilot’s cross between meditation and expression is on display at the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College.

The exhibit, “Transitions: Works by Françoise Gilot,” is a collection of more than 50 pieces of art, including original prints, oils, water-colors and monotypes.

The installation is Gilot’s fourth exhibit held at the Berman Museum, and is itself is a transition – hence the name, giving the viewer a chance to see how Gilot’s work changed and grew from the 1960s into the 21st century.

It consists of four primary sections: original prints, monotypes, the floating paintings and the labyrinth series.

“In the same way poets use words, rhymes, rhythms and cadences to imprint the memory, the painter ignites a fireworks of colors …” continued Gilot, speaking of her artistic process. “Finely tuned or contrasted, recur-rent inflections of lines and volumes orient each element in the picture toward a spe-cific mood the artist hopes to convey.”

These quotes from the artist were collected and put together by the exhibit’s curator, Mel Yoakum, Ph.D.

Gilot, born in 1921, was a witness to and eventual participant in the struggling art movements of her time. She is also known for her decade-long relationship with Pablo Picasso, from which several children

emerged, as did Gilot’s best-sell-ing book “Life with Picasso,” published in 1989.

The mono-types are a fascinat-ing part of the exhibit, wherein the artist employs speed and spon-taneity to capture the imagina-tion on canvas.

Think of this as opposed to oil paint-ing, which is a slow, deliberate and pre-medita-tive process. Every stroke of the brush is pondered. With Gilot’s monotypes, the artist is doing things too quickly to stop and think before acting.

What we see, upon view-ing them, is Gilot’s process and thoughts made manifest through her art.

Another noteworthy aspect of this exhibit is the Labyrinth Series, which the artist created primarily from 1961 to 1963. In it, Gilot explores the Greek myth of Theseus, Ariadne and the Minotaur.

There are no specifics

within, no descriptions, no solid references – only abstract colors and shapes, the anatomy of the painting giving rise to rhythms that evoke the legend and shed light on the myth.

In an essay that touches on her method, Yoakum writes: “Her goal is not to add narration, description or representation, but rather to dramatize and enliven a dia-logue. Painting is a parable; it is a symbolic communi-cation that addresses itself not only to the senses … but also to the spirit and the imagination.”

“Transitions: Works by Françoise Gilot” will be on display through Sept.

23, 2012, in the main gal-lery. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m.

This is an amazing op-portunity to view in-depth, inspiring artwork. It acts as a visual autobiography of Gilot’s life and her evolu-tion as an artist, muse and student of the great Pablo Picasso, eventually breaking away to find her own truth, as all artists must do.

But the artwork itself is not where Gilot found truth; it merely points to it, whispers a suggestion. As the great man said, “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.”

Some pictures grab hold of your attention because

they feature the appearance of famous figures. These are different. They are not photographs of recogniz-able celebrities or people accustomed to enjoying high social status. Instead, they are anonymous high school teenagers. And they are dressed to the nines for the sake of participating in the widespread rite of passage called the Senior Prom.

As an exhibition of pic-tures of boys and girls, they represent adolescents living in such widely separated American cities as New York City, Austin, Texas, and Charlottesville, Va. As you look at them, you find there are two factors they all share. The first is that all the im-ages were made by the same, well-known photographer, Mary Ellen Mark.

Second, as a body of work, they comprise an exceptional solo exhibition titled “Prom.” The show is currently available to visi-tors in the Levy Gallery of the Perelman Annex of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The closing date is Sept. 30, 2012.

Interestingly, all of the pictures in the installation were made with a large 20” by 24” Polaroid cam-era. Some-how, the sheer scale of the work lends a close-up air of authenticity to the pieces on view.

The most immediate impression you form as you make contact with Mark’s work is the candor of her vision. As photographs,

her pictures never become make-believes, artificially posed studio contrivances, fictions designed to function as playacting. Instead, the sentimentality and naiveté of her subjects is unimpeach-ably genuine. The range of

emotions evident in the appearance of the young people has a ring of truth. The expres-siveness given voice by the ges-tures of their eyes are just as convincing and com-municative as their clothes and the poses they strike.

Inevitably, you find yourself asking, “What’s in store for these youngsters?

Will they marry or remain single? What educational and vocational roles might they eventually play?”

The ultimate meaningful-ness implicit in these prints comes from your interaction with questions generated by your intellect, your capacity to feel deeply, your ability to imagine and the basic process of observing with your eyes.

Intuitively, you also find yourself joining these issues with additional fragments drawn from memory. Together, they all interact in your head with what you see in the pictures. The pale tones of light and the dark notes shadow cause levels of profound awareness to crystalize inside both your mind’s eye and within the synapse’s firing between your receptive nerve end-ings. Energized and liber-ated by the magic of her

craft, a gifted photographer has framed moments of understanding that put you in touch visually with the unexpected, the ambiguous, the obvious and, on occa-sion, the witty.

Mary Ellen Mark was born in suburban Philadelphia and began photographing with a small box type camera at the age of 9. She attended

Cheltenham High School, where she developed a dis-tinct talent for the visual arts. In due course, she earned a BFA degree in painting and art history at the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. Shortly thereafter, she took graduate studies in photo-journalism at the univer-sity’s Annenberg School of Communication. That was followed by travel and picture-making abroad on a Fulbright Scholarship.

On her return to America, she took up residence in

New York City and achieved considerable recognition for various photographic series including

Vietnam War demonstra-tions, the Women’s Libera-tion movement, transves-

tite culture and the Times Square scene. She has also served as a unit photogra-pher for a number of highly acclaimed motion picture films. Among them are Mike Nichols’ “Catch 22” and “Carnal Knowledge” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now.”

Mark refers to her photog-raphy as a projection of her deep interest in people on the edges of society. Specifi-cally, she has said, “I feel an affinity for people who haven’t had the best breaks in society. What I want to do more than anything else is acknowledge their exis-tence.”

The latest addition to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway’s sparkling new image is the refur-bished Rodin Museum, which opened in mid July.

It joins the new Barnes Museum, which opened in May, to make the Parkway more

exciting and filling in the long empty road along the Park-way — from the Free Library, at 20th, to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, at 25th, a space of five long blocks, now filled with world-class art, surely a tourist mecca.

At the opening reception, members and officials got to glimpse the newly clean white neoclassical Rodin museum and enjoy French- inspired treats such as French toast bites, croissants and flavored Perrier water. The guests got the chance to wander through gardens created in the 1920s by Jacques Greber, a landscape designer, who worked with famed architect Paul Cret, who designed the building as well as the Parkway itself.

In the past three years, the paths and gardens of the Rodin Museum were re-turned to their original appearance by landscape architects from Olin, who also designed the grounds of the Barnes Museum next door.

The opening was a garden party that would have pleased Auguste Rodin, who died in 1917 before the museum opened in 1929, displaying about 130 examples of his sculp-tured figures — from his masterpiece “The Gates of Hell” through “The Thinker” and “The Burghers of Calais” and “The Kiss.” Most of the pieces have been restored to their

original condition and arranged throughout the garden.In his remarks before members and the press, Timothy

Rub, the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which administers the Rodin, said that the Rodin Museum was known as “the little jewel box” soon after it opened.

Rub told the group of about 200 that the three-year project returning the museum and its gardens to its original form was almost an archaeological effort.

The $9.1 million refurbishing of the museum brings it back to its appearance in 1929 when Paul Cret and Greber supervised not only the design of the pillared limestone museum but also the plantings and the placement of all the sculpture throughout the grounds.

The pieces of sculpture have been cleaned and polished. The ones that will be displayed outside are protected by a coating. “The Bur-ghers of Calais” is displayed in the east garden next to “Three Shades,” a longtime loan, in an arrangement originally planned by Cret but never realized.

Inside, research found that the covering of the main gal-lery, which resembled a sort of fake marble, was inaccurate and the walls of this gallery are now covered in a beige

linen material. The side galleries were discovered to have originally been a sort of pomegranate red.

The formerly dusty flooring inside the galleries was uncovered to be birch wood of incomparable value. It was also cleaned and restored and adds a warmth and depth to the rooms, contrasting nicely with the dark bronze of many of the sculptures, such as “The Gates of Hell,” which fills the entrance of the galleries. The large bronze piece, with 230 figures fills the restored Meudon Gate and contrasts with the pris-tine white museum.

The arrangement of the sculpture is dictated by Cret’s notes with The Kiss inside the building now that the large “Burghers of Calais” has been moved outside.

Research also brought out the appearance of the original pedestals, designed, according to some but not authenti-cated, by Louis Kahn, who interned with Cret.

Visitors will find another contrast between the new gleam-ing refurbished museum and the old dusty warehouse stor-ing Rodin’s valuable treasures. Not surprisingly, entrance is no longer free.
