As we all know (or should know)within the ancient art of Ma-

sonry lies that sinister spectre ofdistress, which in varying guises, threatens the peace, harmony andunity of innocent Masons. Call itwhat you will, but it is that obsti-nate foe that causes deceit andbetrayal, against which that brav-ery within us must rise up to over-come.

The hero lies within us, uponwhich we rely to conquer thoseenemies of distrust and despair. We ourselves have to be the heroesto change the climate of distressinto hope. It is by our own neces-sity that we must build the frame-work for our own future.

Do you remember when youwere raised a Mason? It was one ofthe exhilarating experiences in life.It was a sign of hope and expecta-tion. So, as we travel the road ofour Masonic experiences we alwayscome back to the place and time

that set us on our way. The thirddegree has always been the sign ofa new beginning.

That is how the great cycle oftime works. Out of winter comesspring. Out of darkness comes light. That is the voice of the cosmic uni-verse—from uncertainty is born arebirth of reassurance and won-der.

From a book called "Light fromMany Lamps", comes this sentence:"Always out of every age, has comea new dawn, a rebirth of life andspirit, the powerful surge ofprogress carrying us forward, andupward," Or, as Carl Sandburgwould say, "I see great thingsahead, great days possible to menand women of will and vision." Thatis the talisman of faith. Masonswear many badges of honor. Youhave been given that badge. Wearit with pride so that light that iswithin you shines forth to enlightenothers.

John Adams could just as easilyhave been talking about today

when he wrote in 1776 of his fearsthat the Continental Congress’decisions would be dictated “bynoise, not sense; by meanness, notgreatness; by ignorance, not learn-ing; by contracted hearts, not largesouls?' His conclusion is as appro-priate today as it was then: "Theremust be decency and respect andveneration introduced for personsof authority of every rank or we areundone. In a popular government, this is our only way.” Decency, re-spect and veneration producedcompromise and a foundation thathas endured for 236 years. Todaywe are surrounded by noise, mean-ness and ignorance in our govern-ment and sometimes in private life. The measure for our leaders must

be their ability to rediscover thatproven formula of sense, greatnessand learning.

In addition, there also needs tobe a sense of inclusiveness in day-to-day transactions from leadersin our fraternal organizations. When a leader excludes advice out-of-hand, it can turn off followers. Ifyou want volunteers to continue tocontribute, there needs to be asense of inclusiveness. When fol-lowers are not encouraged to par-ticipate in fiscal interaction anddiscussion, there could be a loss ininterest, and ultimately, perhaps,a loss in membership, as followersthat don’t feel included, lose inter-est and might drop out.

In Masonry, we whisper quietcounsel to our Brothers, and ex-pect it to be received in Due Form.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

It is August. The Imperial Session is history. We have a new Impe-rial Potentate, Imperial Sir Alan W. Madsen of Oasis Shriners. Wealso have an new Imperial Outer Guard, Imperial Sir William “Bill”Bailey of Orak Shriners.

We also have a new Shrine temple in the Philippines. That makes195 temples worldwide.

The Imperial Session was eventful, interesting and showed howShriners are supposed to be, Brothers. There were 22 items on thecall. They will be discussed in another article in the Reporter. TheReporter received an Honorable Mention in the Dromedary Awards.

I met with the Potentate of Emirat Shriners of Germany. They desireto unite with us as a sister temple. Sharing ideas and working to-gether to expand Shrinedom.

All in all, the week was an experience to be enjoyed. Thank you forallowing me to represent you, the nobles of Sahib Shriners.

Yours in the Faith,

Charles M. Levan, 33°, Potentate

Recorder’s notesby Oscar Cloutier, [email protected]

Chief Rabban’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Rocky Kearney, [email protected]

I cannot stress enough how important our Membership Program is for the future growth of Sahib

Shriners. Many of you Sahib Shriners do not, orcannot, participate in our activities. However, all ofyou could help our membership recruiting. We neednew members if we want Sahib to continue with oneof the finest fraternal organizations in our commu-nity.

We have over 1,000 children from our communi-ties that are being treated because of Sahib Shriners. We have two hospital vans and a team of dedicated

drivers that transport these kids whenever called on.If our membership continues to decline, we will not beable to accomplish the service that we our givingthese kids in our community.

We need your help now! If you know any Shrinerthat does not belong to Sahib or a Mason that is nota Shriner, call the Sahib office at 366-4449. We willfollow up for you. This is a team effort, and we needyou on this team. Take this message seriously and wewill stop our membership decline.

I was hoping for a slow May and June to get me tothe Imperial Session of 2012, in Charlotte, North

Carolina. This would have given me to a much needed3-week vacation in July.

During May and June, Oriental Guide CarrollScribner, High Priest & Prophet Connie Jacobi and Iset up a schedule to see four lodges in our district. Wehad dinner with our Brothers, have shown a shortDVD on Masonry and the Shriners Hospital’s forChildren and talked about entry into the Shrine. Wehave been warmly received and treated as Brothers. We hope to continue this program into September,October and on into 2013.

Some of us have been diligently working on a newCircus contract and telemarketing contract. As soon

as our old obligations are finalized we will be able tobring the entire package to the nobility.

The Divan under the leadership of Recorder OscarCloutier PP, and High Priest & Prophet Connie Ja-cobi, offered up a very nice 30th Anniversary Partyand Picnic on Sunday, June 17. Among other foods, large banana splits were made by members of theCabiri. There was music and dancing by Taylor &Taylor and great socialization. A show of hands wastaken for the next party in about four months andthere was overwhelming support.

The Imperial Session went well although longdays. By the time all of us get back, we will be readyto jump into fall. Everyone be careful and safe and wewill see you all in August.

At the writing of this article, I’m preparing for mytrip to Charlotte for the Imperial Session. There

will be many issues on the table and I’m lookingforward to representing Sahib. The memories of our30th Anniversary party are very fresh in our minds asit was a great celebration of our nobles, ladies, familyand most of all new friends. There were many newfaces that were asking, “if we had this kind of func-tion often?” We should have, as fun was had by all.Excellent food, entertainment, and let’s not forgetthe fabulous ice cream sundaes served by our Cabiri.

Okay, what’s on my mind for the future to come?I’m very concerned about our Widows and Widowers. When there is a passing of one of our nobles, thewidows just don’t seem to be remembered, as theyshould. Some have worked as hard if not harder insome cases to contribute to the Shrine cause. Wendyand I with the help of Eileen McKenzie will be form-

ing, “Sweethearts and Singles.” It is our hope to openup communications with our ladies and single nobles.I’m hoping also to have at least one full table atevents like the Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance. We need to make sure that all stay informed of what’sgoing on at Sahib and that the rest of us try to go thatextra mile to make a call or pick up one of ourSweethearts or Singles as they may not be able todrive at night or even drive at all. They may want toattend Bingo or one of the shows. So, if you knowsomeone shut in at home or if you would like to helpin our little venture, please contact Wendy, Eileen ormyself.

As I look to the years to come, the one thing thatI could see a person fearing would be loneliness. So,let’s bring a smile to the faces and happiness to thehearts of those who worked so hard to help theShriner’s Hospital for Children.

Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

We have a winner! At the Pancake Breakfast onJune 3, the winning ticket for the Harley

Davidson Booze Wagon was drawn. Tom Dickson ofSarasota had the lucky ticket. Tom is a Mason andmember of Sarasota Lodge No. 147. He is also amember of the Knights of the Eagle Chapter of theWidows Sons Masonic Riders Association. Membersof the Motor Corps delivered the prize to the winneron June 6. The Motor Corps thanks also those whobought tickets on our annual Booze Wagon raffle. Ifyou didn’t win this year, we’ll be back in 2013.

With the Shrine closed on Wednesday nights through-out the summer, the Motor Corps held its monthlymeetings at the Eagles Club on the west side of BenevaRoad. We’ll be back at the Shrine in September.

Several of our members participated in the “PowerCash by the Bay” Charity Ride on Saturday, June 30.The ride began at Linger Lodge in Bradenton andended at Powerboats by the Bay in Sarasota’s Cen-tennial Park. The event was held in conjunction withthe Sarasota Offshore Super Boat Grand Prix. Pro-ceeds from the ride benefited Suncoast Charities forChildren.

Our Bikerbilly dinners began on Thursday, July 19and will go through August 30. Motor Corps membersand their ladies will give the Hillbilly Shrine Club asummer break. If you haven’t tried our Bikerbilly din-ners, you have several more weeks to come out on aThursday night. We’re sure you’ll enjoy our famousburgers, onion rings, and maybe even some batteredmushrooms, plus a number of other items on our menu.

The Motor Corps is the host for the August 14Birthday-Anniversary Dinner Dance. Music is being

provided by Bob Layne & the Melletones. Menu choiceswill be either Florentine chicken breast with spinachor shrimp stuffed Tilapia fillet. Though this is the“dog days of August,” we hope you’ll join us for anenjoyable evening. See Marylou for reservations andtickets.

Since the June Reporter, I must report that themonkey has moved again. Barry Hart (Policyman)was caretaker for only a short time when HamptonCrimi (Sambo) took possession of the monkey. Itseems that the President of the Motor Corps is havingproblems adjusting to his new bike.

When this reporter prepared the birthdays andanniversaries listing for the June Reporter, he failedto include those to be recognized in July, since no JulyReporter. So I begin with an apology to those mem-bers and their ladies who celebrated birthdays andanniversaries in July. Birthdays that were celebratedin July were: Lady Sue Woodman (Puppy) on the 4th,John Hubbard (Hotrod) on the 7th, Lady KathrynGalanti on the 14th, Tom Rigby (Turmoil) on the24th, Wally Lacey (Red Dog) on the 28th, and PaulWoodman (Wood Dog) on the 30th. July anniversa-ries were: Don Stuckey (Bypass) and Lady Anne(Pebbles) on the 3rd and Tony Galanti (Deuce) andLady Kathryn on the 31st.

We have four Motor Corps members and theirladies with birthdays in August, but no weddinganniversaries this month. Birthdays include GeorgeMitchell (Top Dog) on the 11th, George Nikias (PapaNick) on the 14th, Hampton Crimi (Sambo) on the20th and Lady Jill McGarvey (Shamrock) on the27th.

Stay tuned for more monthly picnics at DallasWhite Park and Mixers scheduled for cooler

weather this fall. Please phone President Bob‘Mixmaster’ Somerville 429-6433 for reservations.

A good crowd of nobles, ladies and guests turnedout for both our June 2 Mixer at the Olde WorldRestaurant in North Port (see Lady Phyllis Copher’sphotos on facing page) and our July 7 Mixer at theOlive Garden in Port Charlotte.

Each Tuesday 7:30 a.m. rain or shine, 52 weeks ofthe year, our nobles, ladies and friends breakfast inseparate rooms at the Olde World Restaurant forinformation, fun and fellowship. We invite any Ma-son or Shriner with their lady and/or guests to join usfor some of our friendly banter and civic projects. Please bring your and your friends’ aluminum canpull-tabs for Bob ‘Can Man’ Arnold, and your oldmagazines with blacked out address labels for John‘Magazine Mogul’ Brophy, contact John at 426-0743,or <[email protected]>, to affix our Shrine Clubsticker and distribute on his 26-mile round trip toNorth Port medical offices and firehouses.

Noble Sam Cohen reports that our new North PortMasonic Lodge No. 406 with Worshipful Master JimGodshall will receive its Charter on Friday, August 17at Venice Lodge No. 301. For details, phone Sam at(941) 377-0273.

Sickness and distress: We welcomed back NobleBill Shipley from rehabilitation after his back sur-gery, plus Bill Schultz (sorry Bill, no photo) reportshearing ‘everything!’ with new hearing aids.

Oy vey! No one even took a guess about our June‘Quotable Notable’. It was President Ronald Reagan’sSolicitor General Charles Fried who said in a recentinterview with the Washington Post: “I’ve never un-derstood why regulating by making people go buysomething is somehow more intrusive than regulat-ing by making them pay taxes and then giving it tothem.”

So here’s our August ‘Quotable Notable’ contest –Agreeing with the 1880s utopian socialist EdwardBellamy’s vision of compulsory national service forall younger men and women, what contemporaryconservative commentator recently wrote, that weneed a mandatory national service program “thatwould force members of the upper tribe and the lowertribe to live together, if only for a few years. We needa program in which people from both tribes worktogether to spread out the values, practices and insti-tutions that lead to achievement.”

The first non-club member to identify the AugustNotable to this scribe at the above email address orphone (941) 429-6882 wins a free Tuesday morningbreakfast for two with the North Port Shrine Club.

While nobles attend our 2nd Monday of the month11:30 a.m. Stated Meeting “in back” at the OldeWorld, we invite their ladies to join our ladies in aninformal monthly birthday lunch “up front.” Recentguests included Lady Karen and newly initiated NobleAl Sawdai who we swore in as a club member at ourMay stated meeting.

. . .continued from page 40138th Imperial Session – July 2012

matter could be compromised or solved. This beingthe case, he than made a motion to table this item. Avote was called, and the item was tabled, along withItem #7 which also was concerned with this matter.

Item #8 on the call, if passed would abolish therequirement for a written ballot on elective offices ifonly one candidate for elective office to that positionwas nominated. This item passed.

Item #9 on the call, if passed, would allow elec-tioneering for elective office by many means, such as e-mail, letters, news items, etc. This was again defeated.

Item #10 on the call was again defeated. If passedit would recognize the Recorder as the Chief Admin-istrative Officer of the temple, under the generalsupervision of the Potentate.

Item #11 on the call stated that no current yearsdues would be collected for initiations in November orDecember. This item passed.

Item #12 on the call stated that no hospital levywould be accessed nor collected for initiations inNovember or December. This item passed.

Item #14 related to civic parades in which Shrinetemples, units or clubs participated in. If passed, asamended, it would permit immediate family mem-

bers of a noble to ride only, not walk, on a paradevehicle having four or more wheels, if so authorizedby the Potentate. This item passed.

I think that the Imperial Committee that selectscities and dates to hold our events, must pick loca-tions and dates where record heat days will happenwhen the Shriners are in town. For the previous fouryears, this has occurred when the Imperial sessionswere there. Needless to say, it happened again thisyear in Charlotte. Lady Jean and I were very fortu-nate in locating a shady spot, under the leaves of atree, in a seat right on the parade route. We were ableto see the entire one-hour and forty-five minute event. It was a very nice parade, and enjoyed by thousandsof Shriners and local area residents.

Other items of interest were the report of the Timeand Place Committee who announced the location ofthe up-coming Imperial Sessions. This is the sixth year that Rowlett Elementary in Bradenton has collected pull-tabs for the Shriners Hospitals for children. This project wasstarted by Mrs. Boyd as a math project, to see how many tabs equaled the children's weight. This was to be a one year project, but on thefirst day of school of the following year the children brought in the tabs and it has continued. The class that brings in the most tabs gets atrip to the Sahib Shrine Circus as a reward. This year the children and community friends collected 142 pounds of tabs. This donation willhelp a lot of the Shrine children to get new or refurbished wheelchairs. Thank you for all the support. Ladies Kay Weyer, High Priestess

Editor’s Note: Our Brother Ernie passed away July 8,2012. He belonged to Hollywood Lodge No. 355, andwas a 33° Scottish Rite Mason SJ, Grand Cross. Hewas in 197 movies and his long-running TV sitcom“McHale’s Navy.” He was in the US Navy for 10 years. We ran a one-pager on Brother Ernie in the January2011 Sahib Reporter magazine.

In 1946, I travelled with a friend down to a littletown called Abingdon, Virginia, to see what theBarter Theatre had to offer. It offered nothing

except hard work and board. My friend, not acceptingthe work they offered him, stayed one day—I stayedfive years. In that time, I grew to love the town and allit offered. The people, in particular, were simplymarvelous.

Occasionally I would be assigned to go down to theprinting shop and get posters made for the upcomingshows at the Barter Theatre. Oneday, in talking to the owner of theprint shop, one Elmo Vaughan, Ifound that he belonged to the localMasonic Lodge, No. 48, in Abingdon. My father was also a Mason andhad advanced to the Thirty-SecondDegree in Scottish Rite Masonry, and I told this to Elmo. He waspleased, and sensing his pleasure, Iasked him if maybe I could join.He said nothing, continuing hiswork, and a short while later, Itook my posters and left.

The next time I saw Elmo, Iasked him again about joining theMasonic Order—again he saidnothing—and again my work tookme away.

We became good friends andfinally one day I passed by and again I asked if I couldjoin the Masons. Instantly, he whipped out an appli-cation and I hurriedly filled it out. I didn’t learn ‘tillater, that in those days, you had to ask three times.

I was thrilled! Not only was I going to be the firstactor ever in Lodge No. 48, but I could just imaginemy father’s surprise when I would spring the oldgreetings on him! I wanted only to surprise my Dad—and was I surprised, when after I was made anEntered Apprentice, I found I had to remember every-thing that happened to me at that event and comeback and answer questions about it! I was assigned toa dear old man of about 92 years of age who, I felt, must have been there when the Lodge first started. He was really of the old school—and he started me outwith the foot-to-foot, knee-to-knee and mouth-to-earroutine of teaching.

Besides doing my work for the Barter Theatre anda little acting to boot, I was also going to that dearBrother for my work in Masonry. I would tramp allover those lovely hills and work on my “Whence cameyou’s” and one day—oh, one fine day—I stood foot-to-

Foot to foot, mouth to earby Brother Ernest Borgnine, 33°, Member of Abingdon Lodge No. 48 Virginia USA

foot with my Brother and answered every questionperfectly! I was ecstatic! I was overjoyed and couldn’twait to get to Lodge to show my ability as an EnteredApprentice. After I quieted down, that dear Brothersaid, “You’ve done fine, but aren’t you really only halfstarted?” I couldn’t believe him! I knew my work;what else was there? He said, “Wouldn’t it be betterif you knew all the questions too?” I couldn’t believemy ears! All that hard work and only half-done? Hegently sat me down foot-to-foot, knee-to-knee and mouth-to-ear and taught me all the questions. That didn’t comeeasy, because I was almost doing the work by rote, butwith careful listening and by really applying myself, Iwas soon able to deliver all the questions and answersperfectly! The night that I stood in front of the Lodgeand was asked if I was ready to answer the questions ofan Entered Apprentice, I respectfully asked if I could doboth—questions and answers. I was granted that wish

and later found that I was the sec-ond man in my Lodge to have everdone so! I am truly proud of that, never having demitted, I am still amember in good standing inAbingdon Lodge No. 48. I tell thisstory, not for the merit it mightgain me, but to tell you that learn-ing the Entered Apprentice obli-gation taught me a great lessonin acting as well: that before Iever attempt to do a part I shouldwork, rehearse, feel, almost livethat part to know what I am talk-ing about!

As I’ve advanced in Masonry,I have found we are an elite groupof people who believe in God, coun-try, family and neighbors. Wework hard to help our fellowman;

and through our charitable work, such as support forthe Childhood Language Disorders Centers, we havemade it possible to help many children grow into goodAmerican citizens. We should always be proud of theOrder we belong to. Where in all the world do you findso many great men and Brothers who have helped thewhole wide world? But—we are hiding our light un-der a bushel basket! Recently I attended a dinner fora friend, and I ran across a Brother who identifiedhimself in a hushed voice. I asked why he spoke in awhisper when talking about Masonry, and suddenlyI realized he wasn’t the only one who had ever donethat. I speak out loud about Masonry to everyone! I’mproud of the fact that I belong to an organization thatmade me a better American, Christian, husband andneighbor; and all it took was a little self-determinationby going foot-to-foot, knee-to-knee, and mouth-to-ear!

Source: The Fez monthly magazine from the Kis-met Shrine, May-June 2011 issue. The piece was origi-nally prepared for California Freemason Online.Ilearned about it from our own Recorder Emeritus BillBatten.

SHRINE UNIT NEWSGreetersby Dick Menzak, Past President

The latest word I have on Brother Dave “Sarge”Dickerson is that he is in rehab after major

surgery in May. He is recovering at the SarasotaPines located at 10th and Orange Streets.

At our last unit meeting, conducted by First VicePresident George Thomas, a motion to go dark for Julyand August was voted on and passed. Our next Greetersmeeting will be Thursday, September 13 at 10:30a.m. The Greeterettes are also dark until September.

Our first parade will be on Labor Day. We will carpool from the Sahib parking lot. All members will bereminded by phone. Let’s have a great Greeter turn-out.

Birthdays for September are Richard Endres andGeorge Thomas.

Let us keep all ill Greeters and any of their familywho are ill in our prayers.

Join the prestige unit – be a Greeter!

A Legion of Honor Past Commander asked me if Icould pass along good military news instead of

always writing about how the U.S. Navy is way aheadin 2012 by already firing ten commanding officers.

In the VA system? Need to talk to a shrink? TheVA has just announced they have a vacancy rate of15.2% for psychiatrists; more especially in high cost-of-living areas. The VA hired 266 psychiatrists lastyear, but still needs more. The VA went on to mentionit is expecting more than 600,000 new patients need-ing mental counseling.

U.S. teams have recovered 229 sets of “suspectedremains” of American troops is 33 searches in NorthKorea from 1996-2005, but only a very few have been

positively identified. DOD estimates there are 5,300unaccounted for remains in North Korea alone.

Medal of Honor (MOH) Fascinating Facts: TheU.S. Coast Guard only has one MOH (posthumous)recipient and that from 1942. Nineteen men haveearned the MOH twice and the youngest awarded wasa 12-year-old during the seven days 1862 battle inVirginia. The MOH has been awarded to five sets ofbrothers and the junior service U.S. Air Force MOHwas authorized on July 6, 1960.

Although the LOH is dark for the summer months,we are not inactive. Memorial Day saw the Sahibflags lowered to half-staff at sunrise and just theAmerican Flag rose to full staff at high noon. Forhurricane season, only a U.S. storm flag will be flownday to day. Stated meetings mean your LOH is post-ing the Colors, so...we are busy.

The U.S. Army is flush with troops and now grantsno waivers for misconduct convictions, drug or alco-hol issues and convicted of a sex crime? Forget it! TheArmy goal is to slash a current population of active-duty 570,000 to 490,000 by 2017.

The Ohio DMV is not happy with former soldierSean Bujino’s license plate. Seems the license plateon his car for four (4) years is now offensive to theDMV. His license says, “ICUHAJI.” This can be pho-netically read as, “I see you, Haji.” “Haji” is a com-mon-and often derogatory term used by U.S. soldiersserving in Iraq and Afghanistan to refer to rag head

Arab people. However… “HAJI” also refers in historicdefinition as “A person who has made a pilgrimage toMecca.” You be the judge, who is right?

U.S. Army troops could go “Reptilian” in the nearfuture. The Army is not happy with the current camopattern so is experimenting with different designs.Seems the odds on favorite, although extremely unor-thodox, is a Fairbanks, Alaska company’s pattern ofinterlocking shapes that resemble a reptile’s scales, alook that has proven highly effective despite its non-traditional appearance.

I am working on getting the LOH into the City ofSarasota Memorial Day Parade down Main Street. We have enough LOH members still in town to helpfill up our trailer. First off, though, I have to makecontact with the right individual to find out aboutparameters for this parade or if they even, want us orwill invite us.

Keep in Touch.

Greetings to all from the Mariners, it’s hard tobelieve that the first half of 2012 has passed so

quickly. The Mariners have had several fun eventsand parties with many more to come throughout theyear. The Mariners sponsored the June Birthday/Anniversary dinner dance with Kim Jenkins per-forming.

We have many things planned for the summer. Weare planning for a large turnout at Captain Eddies inNokomis on July 11 for dinner and fun. This will takethe place of our regular meeting for July. The nextevent will be a party at Ensign Doug Jennings and

Lady Debbie’s home on July 21. We are planning tohave several boats there for rides, great food, fellow-ship and fun. It seems like there is always good foodinvolved when the Mariners get together.

The Mariners Unit is a parade unit with everyonehaving an interest in boating. Most Mariners do notown boats, so even if you don’t have or ever plan tohave a boat you are welcome. Our ladies are alwayswelcome at all of our events. We always have greatfood and a lot of fun wherever we are. I believe we arethe best unit at Sahib. Happy Boating.

Nobles, it is sure hot here this summer but we arelucky that no big winds have come this way so far.

At the Florida Grand Lodge Session on May 29North Port was granted their Charter and by the timeof reading this hopefully, they will have received theirCharter and will be doing business. Congratulations toall the brothers who worked so hard on this project.

Also Congratulations to R. W. Barry Hart, District27, who was appointed District Deputy Grand Masterat the Grand Lodge Session.

Imperial Session went well and your SahibShriners officers who attended will have the sessionreports ready for your reading.

I guess the biggest thing that happened this sum-mer was Sahib Shrine’s 30th Anniversary SummerParty! It was also a great way to celebrate Father’sDay. About 200 Shriners, their ladies and friendsenjoyed the hot dogs, brats and Del Rawlinson’sfamous “sliders.” The 50’s music by Taylor and Taylorwas superb. The limbo and hula-hoops were tried andseemed to be a highlight of the day. Banana splits bythe Cabiri (Past Potentates) were a great hit andeveryone went home quite full. The hall was deco-rated with a 50’s theme and thanks to all who came todecorate and contributed to the decorations and thefun. If you missed this one, keep your eyes and earsopen, for another may be in the future.

Things went well during the July shut down at theShrine and you’ll be able to see some differences, forthe better.

We need your comments and suggestions as to howto make our restaurant and bar better. Your Divan

has been working on this but feel that every membershould have an input. Please don’t hesitate, for this isyour Shrine and we are the only Shrine in the Stateof Florida that has our own restaurant and lounge. All comments are welcome, good or bad. Please givethem to any Divan member or me so it can be broughtup in the Divan meetings.

SESA Convention in New Orleans is August 8-11.Hope you’ll support your unit or club and cheer themon in hope of bringing back some great trophies.

Be sure to put Saturday, September 22 on yourcalendar for the annual Manatee Shrine Club SteakFry at Sahib. Social hour will be from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00p.m. and dinner from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Youmay contact Jim Smith at (941) 907-0746 for moreinformation and reservations. Cost $12.00 per per-son.

Membership, membership, membership. Weare having our Fall Ceremonial on November 30 andDecember 1 so get a “candidate,” and let’s have a bigCeremonial, I know we can do it! Ask your “BrotherMasons” to join the greatest Shrine in all Shrinedom.Your Membership Committee has been out visitinglocal Masonic Lodges to spread the word about theShriners’ fraternity. It seems to be working becausewe have a few new applicants for the next Ceremo-nial.

Our greatest challenge is now and always will beMembership!!!! We are working very hard to interestpotential new Shriners and have had some smallsuccess. But, unless every one of you lend a hand andyour support, we’ll not meet our goal and our templewill continue its downward spiral. We cannot allowthis to go on and expect to pay our bills! We need youto support your temple!! Each one get one! Replaceyourself!!

We hope our yearbook is on its way. There wereproblems (not ours!) but I think they have beenresolved. Some Shriners have not received their cor-rect orders, etc. and we are working on this area.

Sandy and I have been to Maine to visit the kids, but are very glad to be back home in Venice and getback to work.

A thought: The Potentate and Assistant Rabbanare always on the lookout for men to step into theleadership line. It is busy, challenging, frustratingand a lot of work, but it is really a Great Trip!!

Think about it and if you have an interest, let it beknown!

About it for now—I’ll be available, if I can help anyof you, so give me a call.

A thought: A baseball cap identifies many thingsand organizations, a Red Fez identifies only a veryimportant man—A Shriner and Only a Shriner andhe is known worldwide for the Great Work He Rep-resents!! Wear your Fez with pride!

Treasurer’s notesby Kenneth Shipley, [email protected]

I know you are reading this in early August, yet it ismid-June as I write it. Beatty (my wife) and I have

just come from the June “Birthday and AnniversaryDinner and Dance.” For seventeen dollars, we had acool fresh garden salad, two very passable crab cakes(remember that we come from the Chesapeake Baycountry where the best crab cakes in the world aremade), mixed vegetables, browned rice, hot rolls, coffee, tea, and banana cream pie, tip, andtaxes included. Oh, by the way, we also had a verypleasant evening of listening and dancing to KimJenkins and his great selection of contemporary hits. All for only seventeen bucks a head. When was thelast time you went to a decent restaurant and got agood meal with entertainment for fewer than fiftydollars? ... Each! We also had a great time talkingand just socializing with many of our friends.“Flemings” or “Ruth Chris” we are not. Yet our “Sa-hara Lounge” would match and beat the “Outbacks,”Red Lobsters,” and “Longhorns” of the area; and at amuch better value. I am sure that if you were the partowner of a restaurant, you would probably eat therea couple of times a month. Well, guess what? You arepart owner of our temple and the “Sahara Lounge.” Iencourage you to consider your restaurant for thenext time you feel like having a nice evening out andplan to attend the next Birthday and AnniversaryDinner Dance.

It has been very gratifying to have so many ofyou acknowledge the content of my articles. I havetried very hard to keep you informed while not beat-ing up on you for our financial needs. Since the lastReporter, several nobles have told me that they never

realized the fees paid to the credit card companiesand that they now paid cash for their smaller ex-penses at our Shrine. It somehow makes it seem somuch worth the effort.

Our banking relationship has changed from Re-gions to Iberia Bank. We have examined all aspects ofour financial activity and compared with Wells Fargo,Bank of America and Iberia versus what we weregetting from Regions. Iberia has structured our ac-counts where we no longer pay to deposit our moneyand our check writing in four out of our five mainaccounts is at no charge. Because of the number oftransactions in our “operations” account, it is impos-sible to eliminate all fees. After the completechangeover, however, we will be putting many of ourregular payments on automatic pay and thereforeminimize the number of checks written and transac-tion fees paid. Your Divan has worked hard to reducethe expenses while providing you with a class loca-tion for your club and unit activities. Please takeadvantage of the work and pay us a visit. For the remainder of August, the Motor Corps willbe filling in for the Hillbillies on Thursday nights.Fresh (Not Frozen ) hamburgers, cheese-burgers, onion rings, French fries, Buffalo wings, fried mushrooms, hot dogs (with kraut, chili, or na-ked), and other goodies will be provided at reasonableprices. All proceeds go to the benefit of Sahib Shriners.Come on out and bring your friends. Most of ouractivities are open to both nobles and guests. Hope tosee you soon. Visit your Blue Lodge and bring a friendinto the Shrine.

Sahib’s Divan approves a Fall Fundraiser for theTransportation Fund.

As you are well aware our Transportation Fund isAlways in need of a “financial boost”. Therefore Ihave agreed to organize a fundraiser in support ofthis project.

This project is to be known as Sahib’s F.F.R. for T.I feel quite confident all of our clubs and units

would lend their support. We have determined thebest time to run a fall campaign would be in Novem-ber over three weekends being the Fridays and Satur-

days of November 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17. We feel utiliz-ing three weekends just prior to the Salvation Armystart of their “Kettle Drive” would be timely and giveourselves the flexibility of picking our days and help-ing each other with the necessary coverage as needed.

It is my hope that all clubs and units will partici-pate in this very important project in support of ourShriners Hospitals for Children and Our Kids! Pleasegive this your serious consideration to help us raisethe necessary funds to transport our many patients toand from our hospitals. More to follow!

Summary of Legislation 183rd Annual Grand Communicationby M∴W∴ Joe A. Fleites, P.G.M., Chairman of the Masonic Jurisprudence Committee

Have some Masonic writers said that Masonry is areligion?Yes, and again, it is a matter of definition. If, as somewriters have, you defined religion as “man’s urge tovenerate the beautiful, serve the good and see God ineverything,” you may say that Masonry subscribes toa religion. But that surely is not a conflict withChristianity or any other faith.

Why are Masonic buildings called “Temples:”Doesn’t that suggest a religious building?Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary pro-vides a definition for the word “temple” which is asgood an explanation as any: a building usually ofimposing size, serving the public or an organizationin some special way: as, a temple of art, a Masonictemple.

Can a man be a Christian and a Mason at thesame time?Perhaps the best answer is that most of us are, atleast in the United States. The ranks of Masonry havebeen and are distinguished by many of the outstand-ing religious leaders of America. A quick scan throughthe book: 10,000 Famous Freemasons gives us thesenames from history, among many others:

Rev. Charles T. Aikens, who served as President ofthe Lutheran Synod of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Bishop James Freeman, the Episcopal Bishop ofWashington, D.C. who first conceived and began theconstuction of the National Cathederal.

Bishop William T. Anderson, one of the mostimportant leaders of the Methodist Church. (To becontinued in the September issue)

“Liber” was Latin for “free” or “liberty,” of which theeagle in the Rose Croix Degree is symbolical. It refersto the liberty to travel obtained by the returning Jewsfrom their adversities at the River Euphrates asdescribed in the degree of the Knight of the East. Thisis referred to as “Liberty of Passage,” which Pikeprefers to interpret as liberty of thought, the preroga-tive of a free man and a Free Mason.

As Masons, we have another strong tie with Lib-erty—the Statue of Liberty or Liberty Enlighteningthe World, located in New York Harbor on LibertyIsland. The statue was designed by Frederic Bartholdi. It was a gift from the people of France and is a figureof Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, carryinga torch and a tablet of law with the date of July 4,1776, the date of the American Declaration of Inde-pendence. At the foot of the statue is a broken chain, another symbol of freedom.

As Masons, we can take pride in knowing thatMasons from the Grand Lodge of New York laid thecornerstone for this monument on August 5, 1884.

A French law professor and politician had statedthat if a statue were to be erected to the independenceof the United States it would be only natural if it werebuilt by a united effort—common work of both na-tions—and so it was, with France doing the statuteand the United States doing the base. The completedstatue was formally presented to the United Statesambassador at a ceremony in Paris on July 4, 1884,but it was not shipped to this country until 1885 whenthe pedestal was ready.

The statue was dedicated by President GroverCleveland, a former governor of New York, on Octo-ber 28, 1886.

The statue quickly turned into a landmark. Manyimmigrants found it to be a very welcoming sight. One commented, “It is like you opened your arms towelcome me. Give me the chance to prove I am worthyof your reception.”

The month of May was a relatively quiet time forthe club. We postponed that month’s luncheon by

an hour to ensure that our brothers could attend thefuneral of Ill. Sir Phil Mitchell PP. In respect of hiswishes, we elected to forego flowers at the funeral butinstead donated to the Shriners Hospital for Chil-dren. I am proud to say that we collected $110.00 fromour SSRC members and this check has been pre-sented to the Sahib Shriners in his memory.

For those of you who didn’t make it to our regularmeeting in June I’m afraid to say that you missed amost excellent lecture. The evening’s program was apresentation given by Brother Casey Fletcher on thesubject of the 6th, 15th and 28th Degrees. The lecturefocused on the characters of Zabud, Zerubbabel andConstance; the three very distinct moral dilemmaseach were put in and how each of them dealt withtheir predicament. It was very enlightening and gaveus good reason to look at all the Degrees in theScottish Rite and how they work together to make uswho we are.

This was a change in our usual program deliveryand I would like to do more events in a similarmanner on the hope that it will encourage more toattend - if only out of curiosity.

Another part of club business we were able toconclude was the appointing of Brother Barry R.

Batezel as our 2nd Vice President for the remainderof the year. This took quite a while to come to fruitiondue to the peculiar meeting schedule and BrotherBatezel has been most patient. A virtue which I’msure will do him good stead as he works his waythrough the line. I look forward to having his enthu-siasm put to good work and I’m sure our club willbenefit tremendously from his efforts. Bro. Batezel isa member of Phoenix Lodge No. 346 as well as thecurrent Senior Deacon at Venice Lodge No. 301.He isVice President of the Widows Sons and a recentaddition to the Scottish Rite and Knights of St. An-drew. He has already taken parts in the 9th, 10th and29th Degrees, so this new appointment will compli-ment his existing responsibilities quite nicely. Thanksand good luck!

Going back to our monthly luncheons, we typicallystart gathering in the Sahara Room at around 11:30a.m. Come as you are, from the work place or the jobsite it’s all very casual. Everybody just orders off themenu. The price is right, the conversation is neverdull and you might even hear a new joke or two. Bringa friend if you want - they don’t have to be a Mason. It’s an open affair. No agenda and no meeting, socome on out and join us.

Note: Any Scottish Rite Mason in good standing iseligible to visit or even join the Sarasota Scottish Rite

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

As the nation celebrated, Shriners convened in Charlotte

Two hundred clowns, 150 motorcy-clists, 60 horses, 20 bands, two cam-

els and up to a half-dozen men drivingmotorized ice chests. 15,000 were ex-pected at the July 4 convention; plus thelongest parade in Charlotte, North Caro-lina history.

All that—plus a couple of thousandShriners—were to put Charlotte in the

national spotlight as host to one of theworld’s biggest and perhaps funniestJuly 4 parades.

They hosted a week-long InternationalShriners Convention, culminating in thenaming of Charlottean Al Madsen as headof the organization.

It was to rank as one of the biggerannual conventions held in Charlotte,

with a predicted economic impact ofnearly $15 million.

The Oasis Shriners, based in Char-lotte, is the second-largest group in In-ternational Shriners, with 6,500members spread across 50 counties inwestern North Carolina.

August 2012 SAHIB REPORTER Page 37

This year’s Imperial Session was held in Charlotte,North Carolina. I was pleased and honored to

again having been elected as one of Sahib’s fourelected representatives. Potentate Ill. Sir CharlesLevan, 33°, Assistant Rabban Rocky Kearney andHigh Priest and Prophet Connie Jacobi, were theother Sahib elected representatives in attendance. Also present was Ill. Sir Bruce Steube, P.P, an Emeri-tus Representative. There were several other Sahibmembers present, such as Ill. Sirs Al Robinson, PP,Lou Ortt 33°, PP and Donald Vos, PP.

Registration went smoothly, and various commit-tee meetings commenced for the start of the sessions, for various groups, such as Recorders, Treasurers, etc., followed by the annual church service at theCovenant Presbyterian Church. The public openingceremony followed in the very large Charlotte Con-vention Center. This is where all sessions were held,as well as the location of the Market Place in anadjoining hall. There were about 100 vendors dis-playing various items of Masonic memorabilia, cloth-ing, jewelry and many other booths with fundraisingsuggestions, circus promot-ers and other displays.Shriners Village informa-tion, as well as the East-West Shrine gameinformation was also wellmanned and informative.

The daily routine for yourrepresentatives and del-egates started with 7:00 a.m.meetings for some, and regu-lar business sessions start-ing at 8:00 a.m. or shortlythereafter. At the first business session, annual reportsfrom various Imperial Committees, such as Member-ship, Fundraising activities, Donor Relations and oth-ers were presented and approved by therepresentatives.

Prior to the presentation and discussions on the22 items on the call, a report was presented on therulings and orders of the Imperial Potentate. Thesewere briefly reviewed and discussed. The next itemwas the one that possibly was the most distressingmessage and item brought forth at this session. Thiswas a report from a special committee that wasappointed to review, document and revile all finan-cial matters that pertained to the 2011 ImperialSession. It was reported that investigations revealedthat funds had been released from the Shriners Hos-pitals for Children account for inappropriate pur-chases and expenses that were not authorized norbudget items. These were substantial amounts, in-cluding purchase of a diamond five-star pin for about$3,300 and a Harley Davidson Motorcycle for about$28,000. These two items were presented to ImperialPotentate Michael Severe as gifts. In addition, theentertainment for the Imperial Evening and the lackof income from the sale of tickets to the event resulted

in a total loss of about $750,000 including the giftitems. The findings of the special committee resultedin the discharge of employees for unlawful and unau-thorized disbursements of funds. In April of this year,Imperial Sir Severe issued his personal check for themoney spent on the five-star pin. A formal reprimandwas issued to Imperial Sir Severe. I understand thatthe Imperial Headquarters has reimbursed theShriners Hospitals for Children for the unauthorizedwithdrawal of funds from that account. Needless tosay, this brought about a great deal of discussionfrom those in attendance, and was the main topic ofdiscussions among individuals and groups throughoutthe remaining days of the session. I firmly believe thatthis matter has “not gone away,” and that we will hearmore about this in the near future. Imperial PotentateSevere did comment after the report was read that, asHarry Truman stated, “The buck stops here,” and heaccepted responsibility for what had accrued.

The first day’s session continued, after a break forlunch. Imperial law states that the election for Impe-rial Potentate for the ensuing year must be done on

the first business day ofthe session. This being thecase, Imperial Sir Alan W.Madsen was nominatedand elected Imperial Po-tentate for the years 2012-2013. The rest of theImperial line would be donethe following day. Mondayevening was a free eveningfor those attending, and wejoined with all other mem-bers from Sahib who were

in attendance and our Potentate Ill. Sir CharlesLevan, 33° hosted a dinner for us.

Before reporting on the call items, I will reviewseveral other issues that may be of importance to ourmembers. The remaining Imperial Officers were nomi-nated, and since our current Imperial Treasurer wasretiring, it was necessary to nominate his replace-ment. There were two nominees, Past Imperial Poten-tate Imp. Sir Ralph Semb and Noble James McConnellfrom Kem Shriners. After having the history and quali-fications for the position presented by their nomina-tors, a ballot was called for. The counting of the balletresulted in the election of Noble James McConnell tothe position if Imperial Treasurer.

There were two nominees for the position of Impe-rial Outer Guard. They were Past Potentates JosephSavaglio from Kismet Shriner, and William Baileyfrom Orak Shriners. The ballot was called, WilliamBailey was declared the winner and new ImperialOuter Guard.

The representatives also approved the issuance ofa charter to Agila Shriners, U.D. located in the Re-public of the Philippines. They will march this year inthe Imperial Parade.

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNAby Lady Eileen McKenzie, [email protected]

Hi “girls” (ladies) of Sar-I Court, and yes we arealways “girls!” Or I like to think so, but then

again, I think I was a girl when Chicago was just aprairie! You think? Don’t answer that!

I really do not have much news at this time, regarding our wonderful court. As most of us areaware, our terrific High Priestess Kay Weyer is awayand hopefully getting some well deserved R. & R. andbuilding up her strength, so she is well prepared tocontinue on doing a great job when the curtain goesup once again at our little theater on Beneva Road.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2012 ladies Kay Weyer, HighPriestess and Mary Jane Hamilton, PHP, along withNoble Charles Hamilton went to Rowlett Elementaryin Bradenton to pick pull tabs (see rest of story andphoto on page 13.)

I hope each of you are enjoying your summer andkeeping well.

Our Sahib Shriners will be dark the first twoweeks of July for the Imperial Shrine Session inCharlotte, North Carolina. So there will be no courtunits selling their fantastic items. But let’s not forgetwhen the next wonderful King Pin breakfast startsup again, (the first Sunday of each month) rememberto check it out! I am sure you will find something youcan’t live without!

In the meantime, everyone stay safe! Hopefullyyou’re not going through Sar-I Court “withdrawal”because in just a heartbeat we will all be back to-gether again. But in the meantime, I’m sure we willbe seeing each other out and about somewhere, Godwilling and the creek don’t rise that is!

Outstanding reports were presented by the Fi-nance and Audit Committee, the Grievance and Ap-peals Committee, the Membership Committee, theDispensation and Charters Committee, the Jurisdic-tional Lines Committee and others. The HospitalReport presented by Imp. Sir Douglas Maxwell, Chair-man of the Board of Directors and Trustees, was oneof the finest I had ever heard. There is a videoavailable on this presentation, and I believe that itwill be shown to our nobility in the near future. Whatmarvelous things are going on in our research anddevelopment departments.

Public Relations Chairman Imp. Sir GaryBergenske presented a very good report to thoseattending this open session, and after his presenta-tion and the video clips, I am sure there was hardly adry eye in the huge convention hall. He presented thetwo hospital patient children who were showcased inthe video. These two patients and their family will bethe Shriners Hospitals Ambassadors during the years2012-2013. When schedules are available, they willtravel across the country representing our hospitals. There is also a video available for this report andpresentation, and I feel sure it also will be shown toour nobility in the near future.

Reports on the fundraising events and activitieswere also given. Our East-West Shrine Football Gameexperienced a banner year, and it is expected to showgreat gains in the future. Many of the players in thisyear’s game are now on professional football rosters. Our sponsorship of the Justin Timberlake Open PGAGolf Tournament is now an annual event on the PGATour. Shriners Hospitals for Children also has a realwinner with our sponsorship of NASCAR driver DavidRegan. He was present here at the Imperial Session, and one of his racecars was on display. The newImperial Potentate created Regan and a fellow NASCARdriver, Shriners, and presented a fez to each.

The items on the Call are not discussed or called inorder. It is up to the chair to call each item as he seesfit. Some of the items on the call were of little interestto most in attendance as they pertained to jurisdic-tional matters and items relating to a particularShrine, territory or manner of voting, written ballotor voice. Other items that were on the call that mightbe of interest to our nobility are as follows:

Item #2 on the call would have permitted a noblewith a valid demit to affiliate with any Shrine templehe chose to. Also, a Master Mason would have beenpermitted to petition for membership in any Shrinetemple regardless of his residence address. No waiv-ers would be required. This failed to pass.

Item #3 on the call, if passed, would not requirethe per capita fee for nobles created in November orDecember be remitted to the Imperial Treasurer. This passed.

Item #6 on the call was one that caused a greatdeal of debate and concern. As a little backgroundhistory on this one, the Grand Master of Arkansasdecreed that no member of the Arkansas Masonicorders would be permitted to neither attend Shrinefunctions, transport children to our hospitals norattend any stated meetings of the Shrine. Our Impe-rial Potentate has issued an Imperial Certificationwhich in essence would allow Arkansas Shrine Ma-sons to attend and participate in all Shrine functionsif they were expelled from membership be the GrandLodge for other than non payment of dues until alldue processes by law had been fulfilled. This wouldpermit initiation of authorized qualified non-Masonsin Arkansas temples. Things were getting very hos-tile on this matter, and the Imperial Potentate elect,Imp. Sir Alan Madsen approached the podium forpermission to speak. Permission was granted and hestated that he had been in contact with the currentGrand Master of Arkansas, and had arraigned a faceto face meeting with him to take place in Arkansaslater this month to see if there was any way this

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!
