Reflections of

Summer

August 2012 | Cass County INfo: | 3

I don’t often share the photo quotes that fill up my newsfeed on Face-book — if you fol-low me on Twitter, it’s a different story, because I definitely do retweet things that resonate with me. The ones on Facebook some-

times seem trite and overshared. But this morning, I saw one that was particularly meaningful: “People don’t leave because things are hard. They leave because it’s no longer worth it.” Those of you who read this column regularly know that I always try to be just as cheery in words as my cheesy photo leads you to believe that I might always be. But the truth is, more often than not, I have to remind myself to Say Something Nice. And sometimes, I wonder if it’s worth

it. When I’m having a tough day, I search for beachfront property close enough to commute to an imaginary job where I re-port to a certain Mouse. But, I’m lucky, because usually, I can turn to our Facebook pages and see that what Cass County Communication Network is doing is worth it — because a lost dog has been reunited with its owner, a family has created happy memories at a local event or we’ve helped someone get the information they need to make their life better. What we do isn’t easy, but our fans make it worth it. I get to see a side of our com-munity that doesn’t always make headlines, because the good news isn’t always what people want to hear. I always look at new seasons as a chance for new opportunities. So this fall, I chal-lenge you to look at our community from a different perspective. Instead of looking at what we don’t have, look at what we do have, and celebrate it. When someone com-plains that there’s nothing to do, show them Cass County Calendar. Attend a local festival or event. Learn more about an organization and donate an hour a month as a volunteer. When someone shares an article about something negative, share two about something positive. So many people are working hard to make Cass County a great place to live, work and play., and I guarantee that at least a few of them have wondered if it’s still worth it. You might just be the person who reminds them that it is.

Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana - Michiana (GSNI-M) would like to thank the United Way of Cass County (UWCC), our partner, for their support and commitment to Girl Scouting in Cass County and for joining with us to help build girls of courage, confidence, and charac-ter, who make the world a better place. “One thing I love about the Cass County United Way and GSNI-M/ Cass County is that both organizations service the entire county,

not just Logansport... We have troops in the Logansport, Pioneer, Caston, Walton, and Galveston School Corporations,” says Krista Slusser, Community Liaison forGSNI-M. From all of us at GSNI-M and Cass County Girl Scouts, “We wish you a Happy 75th Anniversary and thank you for everything that you do!”

Celebrating 75!United Way of Cass County is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012 and each month, we’ll highlight a United Way agency or program. This month, we’re focusing on the Girl Scouts of Northern-Indiana Michiana.

Learn more about Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana and its programs and services, and about other United Way agencies, by clicking the 75th anniversary logo on CassCountyOnline.com.

united Way of Cass County kicks of 75th anniversary campaign “Founded in 1937, the United Way has set an aggressive goal of $600,075 in honor of its 75th anniversary,” says executive director Joyce Mayhill. “You can double your dona-tion this year with a match opportunity for new donors of $100 or more. Participation is key, so the United Way has also set a goal to increase donor participation by 20% in this 75th year. In order to sustain and hopefully increase member agency funding as well as fund the additional programs we need folks to take advantage of the matching opportunity in order to support organizations that care for our community.” Funds are allocated to ten agencies working to make a difference in the areas of education, income and health: American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cass County, The Salvation Army, Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana, Boy Scouts of America, Cass County Family YMCA, Mental Health Associa-tion, Food Finders, Senior Center, Peak Com-munity Services. The Cass County Backpack Program and the Cass County Reading Railroad will also be funded through the 2012 campaign. You can learn more, or make a donation online, at www.unitedwayofcasscounty.org.

2012 United Way of Cass County campaign chair Joe Johnson delivered a birthday cake at the end of the United Way Rally. His shirt shows the organization’s 2012 fundraising goal of $600,075. In September, United Way volunteers will come together again for Live United Day on Sept. 21, joining forces to complete more than 100 community projects.
