PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEThe BNC Mission Statement informs our chapter’s dedication to providephilanthropic support to Brandeis University, “a distinguished liberal arts andresearch university founded by the American Jewish community.” BNC doesthis through fundraising and activities “that reflect the values on which theuniversity was founded: academic excellence, social justice, non-sectarianismand service to the community.” Begging your indulgence, I’ll repeat the closingstatement of my last message to you: “Sometimes we need to be reminded thatPhilanthropy is the reason we have joined together on behalf of BrandeisUniversity; Study Groups are the benefits; and friendship and intellectualstimulation are our rewards.”

The BNC Mission Statement and our 110+ Study Groups have been on my minda lot. In June, along with Chapter Presidents from throughout the nation, Iattended a conference at the Brandeis Campus in Waltham, MA. I had time to

think while at Waltham, and one of the key conclusions I reached is how essential our Study Group Leadersare to a chapter as large as we are—not just as group leaders, but as “Keepers of the Flame”. Aside from theChapter Bulletin, Study Group Leaders are the primary communication link, both literally and symbolically, between BNC and our membership-at-large. Think about it: with over 1,200 members, your Board can’tpossibly sit and have one-on-one discussions with you the way we wish we could, about the communalsignificance of our Mission, about how BNC helps fill that scholarly library, builds labs to help unravel themysteries of neurodegenerative disease, and supports students who academically excel but need scholarshiphelp before they can become the next Thomas Friedman, Deborah Bial, or Ha Jin. (Check thewww.Brandeis.edu website for “Notable Alums” to learn more about these and other key world influencers.)

I’d bet that most of our Study Group Leaders don’t realize how very important they are to keeping ourMission strong and vibrant. I say that because sometimes members tell me they didn’t know such and such,or they weren’t aware of something, and I respond that I emailed that information to all Study Group Leaders, requesting them to share it with their groups. Didn’t you hear about it from your Study Group Leader? Andtoo often I hear that their Study Group Leader didn’t say anything about it or doesn’t discuss what’s going onat Brandeis or within our chapter. Sure, not all Study Group Leaders have email but 70% of our membershipdoes. So, why not take it upon yourself, whether you are the Leader or not, to ask at the start of your StudyGroup sessions: What do you hear from our Board, or, what’s the latest news from Brandeis? You too can be a“Keeper of the Flame” if you truly care about what Brandeis stands for and what BNC has achieved. Moststudents on that campus are well aware of BNC and its purpose. They welcomed us and saluted you. Let’s dothe same for them.

This Board annually acknowledges and thanks our chapter’s Study Group Leaders for their service to Brandeisand to this BNC-SFV community, with a Study Group Leaders & Coordinators Bagel Brunch (held on July22nd this year). The Board also has a responsibility to help the Leaders —and you— understand and beproud of the role they serve. Study Group Leaders soon will be hearing from SFV members Sherri BlumenthalDiamond and Diana Dicker, who recently were participants in a study to help National learn more about theneeds and interests of members. Many of the issues raised were about Study Groups. National has made acommitment to address these, as have we. Study Group Leaders are pivotal to ensuring the success of theBNC Mission by “Keeping the Flame”. And we certainly have enough Study Group Leaders to keep thatFlame alive!

Warm wishes,

Harriet Glass Ulmer

DID YOU KNOW?Brandeis International Business School which isconsistently judged to be among the best schools inthe world by organizations such as The PrincetonReview, The Economist and TopMBA has beenranked number one in the United States for itsLemberg Master of Arts International Economics andFinance Program. The ranking, which draws on theopinions and achievements of alumni who graduatedin international economics and finance three yearsago, reflects the longstanding strength of the school’steaching and faculty in the finance discipline.

A settlement has been reached that will keep theRose Art Museum at Brandeis open with itscollection intact. Museum supporters filed a lawsuitin 2009; several months after then BrandeisPresident Jehuda Reinharz announced that theschool planned to close off an estimated $350 millionin artwork in response to the university budgetcrisis. He later clarified that the Rose would nolonger be a public museum, but would remain opento serve the school’s educational needs. Thesettlement reached will allow the Rose to moveforward with a renovation, hire a new director andplan future exhibits. Current President FrederickLawrence has stated he welcomes the settlement, which guarantees that the museum’s collection willnot be “shuffled off”.

Brandeis researchers have made a significantadvance in the effort to understand ALS bysuccessfully reversing the toxicity of a mutatedprotein. Currently there is no cure or preventionfor the disease, which affects nerve cells in the brainand the spinal cord. ALS typically causes death dueto respiratory paralysis within 3 to 5 years of onset.Through research in the lab, they have reportedsuccess in blocking the lethal effects of the gene byplacing several human genes into a yeast cell thatwill show many similar features to the disease-causing proteins. Genes have also been identifiedfor as many as 10 percent of ALS cases that run infamilies. Researchers say it might seem unusual todo yeast experiments of a human neurologic disease, since yeast has no brain cord or any neurons. Ayeast cell isn’t that different from a typical humancell.

WHAT ARE LEARNINGOPPORTUNITIES?

We used to be given a list of syllabi and brieflets fromwhich to choose as a basis for a study group. Many ofour present groups started out in that manner, suchas Legal Puzzlers and various literature groups. Thesegroups have now expanded beyond the originalguidelines and are going strong.

So what is different now? The term LearningOpportunities means just what it says. Our vistashave been expanded with new topics and learningmodels using up to date technology. Below are somegeneral descriptions of what’s available.

BRANDEIS STUDY WITH THE BESTBrandeis faculty continue to provide stimulatinglearning opportunities through their renowned StudyGuides (formerly syllabi and brieflets). BNC’strademark Study Guides consist of scholarlyinformation on a particular topic, insightful questionsfor discussion, a faculty biography, and a recommendedbibliography for further study.

BRANDEIS ENCORE SERIESThe Encore Series presents video programming thatshowcases the faculty and celebrated guest speakersfeatured at special on-campus events. The BrandeisEncore Series will make you feel as though you areattending lectures on campus with the Brandeiscommunity. These programs include DVDs of thepresentations and accompanying discussion questionsprepared by Brandeis faculty.

‘deis flicks

‘deis flicks /DEIS/noun:In collaboration with the National Center for JewishFilm (on the Brandeis campus), BNC has assembled alending library of DVDs. The ‘deis flicks collectionincludes both the work of modern independentfilmmakers and archival materials. Together, theyrepresent a visual record of the Jewish people in all oftheir vibrancy and diversity.
