Are You Really Prepared for A New School Year?by
Matthew E.O’Donnell,
MorganStanley
SmithBarney
You’ve shopped for new clothes, bought their school sup-plies, enrolled them in after-school activities and arranged thecarpool. Congratulations, you’re well on your way to startingthe new school year on the right track. But what about nextyear and the years following? If your back-to-school checklistdoesn’t include a plan for future education needs, you mightneed to make some additional preparations.
It may seem like college is years away, but waiting to save forthose expenses—even for one year—can make a great differ-ence. Children grow quickly, and the cost of a college educa-tion is growing at an even faster rate. Today, many of the eliteinstitutions cost upward of $30,000 annually to attend—andthose costs are projected to double in 18 years. The sooner youstart thinking about future college costs, the more time you’llhave to develop and implement a solid education plan.
Creating an education plan will help you determine howmuch you’ll need to save for your family’s future educationneeds. When it’s time to implement your plan, there are sever-al options available, including 529 College Savings Plans. Theplans are one of the best ways to save for higher education, since they provide tax-deferred asset accumulation, profes-sional management, flexibility, as well as several other benefitsnot available in other education saving options. Most 529 plansalso offer systematic investment options, allowing you to makeregular, automatic contributions and take advantage of com-pounding and tax-deferred growth.
As you prepare for a new school year, make an appointmentto speak to your Financial Advisor about developing a cus-tomized education plan that may help you meet your college-funding goals. Even if you already have a plan, it is still a goodtime to meet with your Advisor for an annual education reviewto make sure you are still on the right track.
Whether your child is preparing for kindergarten or study-ing for the SATs, an education plan should always be a part ofyour back-to-school checklist.

Turn investment for the future into marketing for todaywith advanced reproductive technologies
Advanced reproductive technologies can increase the rateof genetic change and be an investment for future calf crops. However, embryo transfer (ET), in vitro fertilization (IVF),sexed semen, and genetic preservation and cloning offer addi-tional opportunities for marketing your cattle’s elite genetics.
Auctions offering frozen genetics (cryopreserved embryosand semen) have become increasingly popular. Freezing andbanking ET embryos can be a very effective way to help gener-ate early revenue from a cow or heifer that was recently pur-chased, or from a female that a breeder does not have an inter-est in selling. “Embryos are typically offered in packages ofthree at embryo auctions like the Embryos on Snow event heldeach year during the National Western Stock Show,” says JaredKnock, sales and marketing director for Trans OvaGenetics.“Frozen embryos are very easy to transport across thecountry, so buyers from thousands of miles away can considerpurchases without significant added costs.” Also, it allows aninterested buyer to sample multiple, different breeding pro-grams with a fairly small upfront investment.
Offering even greater flexibility for a buyer is a right to flushpackage, which allows an interested breeder to pick the sirethey would like to use for the flush. Many times these are soldon prominent females and there are guarantees on the numberof embryos produced on these packages, but it is important tolook into the details before making a purchase.
Sexed semen is another value-added market. Many newbulls have a hard time differentiating themselves from compe-tition, but offering packages of sexed semen is somethingunique. Since sexed semen can be sorted for males or females, and for artificial insemination (AI) or ET programs, there areopportunities to develop a creative marketing plan aroundsexed semen. Recently, the combination of sexed semen in ET
programs has allowed breeders to market sexed ET embryoson specific matings. This holds tremendous potential to offera package that is very specific to what buyers may be lookingfor.
Once in a while, a bull comes into high demand with verylimited amounts of semen available. One advantage of IVF isthe limited number of sperm cells it requires for fertilization.“If a client chooses not to sort the semen before use in IVF, wecan often use one straw of semen on 5-10 cows at a time,” saysKnock. “But, this is highly dependent on semen quality.”
Some breeders are beginning to understand the marketingopportunity behind IVF technology. A breeder will use oneunit of semen, aspirate three cows from their program, and sellfertilization “slots” to other breeders. Donors would need to becollected on the same day. Through some logistic coordina-tion, this application of IVF gives the semen owner the optionsell one unit of semen several different times.
Finally, cloning offer possibilities for breeders to capturemore from their genetic assets. A breeder with an elite animalcan collect a cell line, or genetic preservation, for the purposeof cloning immediately, or just banking cells to keep for futureuse. Several clones have sold in recent years and the donor’scell lines have sometimes been sold as a package with an ani-mal, or kept with the understanding of the original owner.
Breeders tend to view advanced reproductive technologiesas investments that have long term impact on our breedingprograms, and they certainly are. However, these services alsooffer ways to market genetics in a way that adds revenue to abreeding program very quickly. Breeders have found creativeways to meet customer needs through these technologies andmany other opportunities still exist.

Div. Last Name First Pts. Div. Last Name First Pts.Oklahoma Club Calf Association - July ‘10Greetings from steamy and hot Oklahoma! Summer is upon us, and the heat
is on. The rains are steady in the Central Oklahoma, so we are not in the haymeadow yet, but the hay is looking good.
Preview show was a big success, and the numbers were way up this year.Congratulation to all the OCCA members that did well. As I am writing this, alot of our members are at the Jr. Nationals. Good luck at these shows, and be safeas you are traveling.
Again we want to give a big thanks to our sponsors, Cherokee Trailers, EliteTrailers, Purina Mills, Cinch, and Cruel Girl, for all that they do for theOklahoma Club Calf Association.
All of you OCCA members, remember to recruit new members when you areat these shows. OCCA’s new website is coming out soon. Be on the look out letus know what you think of it.
Several OCCA shows are on the horizon. Don’t forget that the OCCA spon-sors the prospect steer show at the Tulsa State Fair and The Wanted Ones Sale. Ifyou have consignments, get them to Tiffani and Roxane as soon as you can.
Good Luck and Be Safe! I will see you at the shows this fall.Tim B Stidham, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com
