Fiber work – heads up

There is a large fiber relocation project that will be going on Aug 17 to Sept 14.  This is part of the USTAR project and the loss of Federal Way.  New fiber will be placed in the tunnel and then connections will be moved back.

A small portion of the job will be done this Friday night – some redundant connections are being moved. A network engineer will be onsite to assist.

This is on fiber that runs from Merrill Engineering and Park Building to EBC. The network connection to each building is redundant and should not be affected by this. There should be minimal, if any outages. There may be some private point to point fibers that will need to be moved to another fiber on a South loop while this is happening.

We will notify and schedule a time with the users when this happens. Please contact David Kosanke or Mike Sonntag if you have any concerns about any fibers they may be using.

ISO Firewall Changes

ISO would like maybe to.. Sorta..

UGuest restriction changes Allow current hotspot-like access to campus

thru the front door firewall like it is today. ADD firewall rules to restrict internet access

to UGuest more. ??? Maybe. ISO looking at options like Wireless IPS and

IDS.

Guest Network IDs (gNIDs)

Guest Network IDs can be obtained on demand from the Campus Help Desk: 801-581-4000.

One or many may be requested For short-term (less than 2 weeks) use Required information: department & individual

requesting, reason for use, lab or wireless use needed, expiration date
