The Mystery of the Kidnapped Child
"Madam," said Sherlock Holmes, "rest assured I can tell you all you desire to know about your child."
"Oh, can you, Mr. Holmes?" cried the delighted mother, "how?" "Why, as the child was taken from this nursery, those five playthings
on the floor and that apron being the last objects he touched, they indicate to the sensitive mind his subsequent action. So I know he was taken by a traveling salesman and carried only a short distance. Another clew tells me in what they rode. L am pleased to see the child is in no danger, but is held for ransom."
"Do these five playthings and the apron show all that?" asked the mother.
"Certainly, madam; the figures on the apron, for example, show what he is waiting for before releasing the child -- that is, a check."
