Racism in Today’s World,

based on the Stations of the Cross Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of his garments

“Part of the humiliation of crucifixion was that the prisoner was stripped naked, left totally exposed. This was done in an attempt to deny the condemned person dignity.

Racism also attempts to strip others of their dignity. While our human dignity is an indelible gift from God, racist attitudes and actions undermine the human dignity of the oppressor as well as the oppressed. Our nation’s history is tarnished by the enslavement of African Americans, Jim Crow laws, mistreatment of Native Americans, Chinese exclusion laws, Japanese internment camps, and anti-Hispanic discrimination. These patterns of racism flourished in part because ‘good’ people too often remained silent.

If racism flourishes, we are all implicated in a democracy. We are called to transform our society with God’s love. Yet our society still allows some to be stripped of their dignity. As members of the Body of Christ, our dignity is intertwined with theirs. How can we not stand humiliated before the cross, knowing that we have failed to adequately protect the dignity of all our brothers and sisters?”

Stations of the Cross: Overcoming Racism by Tom Faletti

Prayer/Reflection Series on Racism. Part 8.

We cry out to you, O God, to deliver us from the evils of racism that cause us great pain and anguish, dividing our nation.

Deliver us from the evil of active racism, the outspoken language of hate. Deliver us from the evil of passive racism, the attitudes and action that allow racism to continue to exist because too many people say nothing and do nothing to stop active racism. Deliver us from the evil of systemic racism, the biases that have long been a part of many systems, in education, housing, health care, jobs, and in our court and penal structures, creating disadvantages that remain for generations. Deliver us from the evil of cultural racism, from attitudes of superiority and privilege, from stereotyping and devaluing a culture. In your mercy, O God, deliver us from the evils of racism so our communities can be renewed with a deep respect for every human person, so the healing bonds of solidarity may grow and the common good may flourish in this land. Amen.
