This year also marked the return of Julie Clark -botsford first, the Indy Boys with their 350 mph jet-powered school bus!Warbirds big and small were in the air and on the ground. Peace and Solidarity Building by Baba Bulleh Shah

As the Sikh Di-aspora faces its second century of presence in Canada, it is important for those that are born and raised in Canadian society to un-the complex and deeply spiritual journey of their ancestors. The journey 100 years ago to a foreign land was informed by a rich and vibrant history of "#

religious freedom and cultural expression. All these causes transferred with the immigrants as stories and memory mak-ing to Canada and the community has fought hard to become fully con-tributing and responsible members of the Canadian mosaic. The history of legends in our folklore stays with us today - one such person was Baba Bulleh Shah.

Baba Bulleh Shah (full name Abdullah Shah) was a Punjabi poet, humanist and philosopher. Baba Jis writings and thought were $mystic and highly spiri-

tual philosophy of Sufi Islam. As Sufi thought has much in common with the Sikhism, a primary religion in the state of Punjab, the writings of Baba Ji strike a special chord with readers from the state. However, like the teachings of the Sikh-ism, the deep, universal meanings of Baba Bulleh Shahs words are not lim-ited to those belonging to any one religion or race.

Bulleh Shah is believed to have been born in 1680 in the small village of Uch, Bahawalpur, Pun-jab, which is now in Paki-stan. His father, Shah Mu-hammad Darwaish, was himself a very spiritual

man and respected for his knowledge and devotion to God. Shah Muhammed raised Bulleh Shah and his sister in a life of prayer and meditation.

Bulleh Shah himself be-came a respected scholar, but he longed for true inner realization and connection with God. Against the objections of his peers, he became a disciple of Inayat Shah, a famous master of the %&"$'*Bulleh Shah learned and practiced that the path to God is not one marked with ritual and that God does not belong to any one religion or race.

Armed with this knowl-edge, Bulleh Shah became a great humanist as well - someone recognizing and providing solutions to the social problems of his time. In his writings, he documented the disorder and turmoil that Punjab experienced during his lifetime. Bulleh Shahs time was marked with communal strife between Muslims and Sikhs. How-

ever, Baba Ji through his writings and teachings provided hope and re-solve for peace among the citizens of Punjab. As an example, while Bulleh Shah was in the village of Pandoke, the Muslims inhabitants killed a young Sikh man who was riding through their village. This was done in retaliation for the murder of some Muslims by Sikhs. Baba Bulleh Shah denounced the murder of an innocent Sikh and was censured by the mullas and muftis of Pandoke. Bulleh Shah did not cave and maintained his steadfastness that vio-lence was not the answer to violence.

A further example of Baba Bulleh Shahs thoughts being above religious dogma comes from his respect of Guru Teg Ba- + #the Sikhs. In 1675, at the request of a designation of Kashmiri Hindus, who faced persecution and atrocities at the hands of the Mughal rulers, Guru

Teg Bahudur challenged the Mughal Emperor of India Aurungzeb that if Aurungzeb could con-vert him to Islam, all Sikhs and Hindus would convert to Islam. While Guru Tegh Bahadur was tortured and ultimately martyred, he never caved to the fanaticism that was being perpetrated. Guru * "his life and became a martyr in protest of the Mughal regimes policy of forced conversion to Islam. Baba Bulleh Shah so greatly valued this "$+Tegh Bahadur as a Ghazi, or religious warrior, /"controversy among Mus-lims of that time.

The s implici ty with which Bulleh Shah has been able to address the complex issues of life and humanity is a large part of his appeal. In ap-preciation of his lyrics, many of his poems have been put to music by a range of renowned artists

#&"like the Waddali Brothers and Nusrat Fateh Ali to rock bands like Janoon and have been sung in Bollywood movies. We need to draw inspiration from Baba Bulleh Shahs teaching and philosophy and stand up against any atrocities and disputes related to religion that are poisoning that entire world today.

Remove duality and do away with all disputes;

The Hindus and Muslims are not other than He.

Deem everyone virtuous, there are no thieves.

For, within every body He himself resides.

Pilot project to attract more working families to B.C.Family members of most temporary foreign workers in British Columbia will be able to work for any employer in the province, thanks to a pilot project launch.

The announcement was made by Citizenship, Immigration and Mul-ticulturalism Minister Jason Kenney and Brit-ish Columbia Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell.

Since I became Min-ister, I have heard from workers, employers, la-bour advocates and oth-ers who have asked me to make Canada more welcoming for work-ing families coming to Canada as temporary residents, said Minis-ter Kenney. With this pilot project, we will

?"#allowing family mem-bers of temporary for-eign workers to work while they are here with a principal applicant who has been hired because of his or her skills.

More than a million jobs will open up in B.C. by 2020...

In general, temporary foreign workers come to Canada to meet the #"-ployer who has been $ " @or permanent residents for the available jobs. An open work permit,

however, allows the holder to accept any job with any employer.

Previously, only spous-es and common-law partners of temporary foreign workers em-ployed in a managerial, professional or skilled trades job have been el-igible to obtain an open work permit in Brit-ish Columbia. Start-ing Aug. 15, spouses, common-law partners and working-age de-pendants of most tem-porary foreign workers will be eligible, includ-ing many workers in occupations that require lower levels of formal training.

More than a mil-lion jobs will open up in B.C. by 2020, and we will need for-eign workers to help

meet the skills short-ages our businesses are already beginning to face, said Bell. Giv-ing more spouses and working-aged children of temporary foreign workers the chance to take jobs will support local businesses, while contributing to local, regional and provincial economic growth.

Up to 1,800 open work permits will be avail-able under the pilot project, which will end on Feb. 15, 2013.

Nearly 32,000 tem-porary foreign work-ers made the transition to permanent status in 2010, and of those, al-most 2,300 chose to immigrate permanently

to B.C., Minister Ken-ney noted. We under-stand the important role that foreign workers have in every region of the country and we will continue to look at ways to attract workers who have the skills we need now and into the future.

Fraser Health resi-d e n t s w h o a r e scheduled for an operation can now work out for free at a gym and get fit for surgery, thanks to an innovative agreement between Fra-ser Health and the Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club.

As of July 1, surgical pa-tients from Fraser Health are eligible for free access to a five-week preop-erative fitness program at one of the regions 17 Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club locations to get stronger and to lose weight prior to surgery.

The intent of the program is to help pre-op patients improve their physical

fitness so that they can return to normal activi-ties as quickly as possible after their surgery.

Canada and B.C. fund renewable energy for

agricultureApplications are now being accepted from B.C. producers who want to incorporate renewable energy technologies into their existing agri-cultural and agri-food operations.

The Government o f Canada i s working hard to pro-vide farmers with op-portunities to enhance their competitiveness, said federal Agricul-ture Minister Gerry Ritz. Adopting renewable technologies like wind turbines and geothermal heating will help ensure a sustainable future for farming and the environ-ment.

Funded through the fed-eral-provincial Growing Forward agreement, fea-sibility assessments will assist farm families and agri-food businesses in applying these technolo-gies to reduce energy costs, become energy $##"-house gas emissions and diversify beyond con-ventional agricultural-based income sources.

B.C.s agriculture in-dustry is a strategic tar-get for renewable energy technologies as farmers and ranchers are some of the key stewards of the provinces land, said B.C. Minister of Agriculture Don McRae. Our farming families have already proven themselves as leaders in innovation, and this op-portunity to explore fur-ther advances and new

ways of doing things provides for increased economic security.

Participants will be se-lected through a call for expressions of interest and based on several criteria, including com-modity type, location and size, viability of technology adoption and transferability to other agricultural and agri-food operations.

Successful applicants will undergo a confi-dential, in-depth assess-ment to determine the $ "$viability of integrating a "/$-gy technology into their existing operation. They will receive an imple-mentation plan to follow, should they decide to proceed with installa-tion of the technology being examined at their operation.

Participants will be re-quired to contribute to-ward the cost of their assessment before it commences, and to con-sent to the release of their assessment (with confidential informa-tion removed) upon its completion. This con-tribution will be 30 per

cent of the costs (up to a maximum of $5,000).

This program will cre-ate a library of publicly available assessments, and a set of tools will be developed to enable pro-ducers to make informed decisions about which technologies would best integrate into their ex-isting operation. These tools are expected to include industry bench-marks, factsheets, self-assessment tools and sample implementation plans.

Many happy returns: Globalink Grad Comes Back to B.C.Three years ago, Girish Nivarti was one of the superstar science undergrads from India who *'>'"Mitacs Globalink program to experience the world-class research going on at British Columbia universities.This September, Nivarti is returning to the Univer-sity of British Columbia to start his masters degree, after graduating from the Indian Institute of Technol-ogy Kharagpur with the best mark in his class for his honours thesis in mechanical engineering.Nivarti chose UBC over schools like MIT and Stan-ford because of his Globalink experience, which paired the mechanical engineering student with Kendal Bushe, a UBC assistant professor who is one of North Americas most highly respected com-bustion researchers. Bushe will also supervise Nivartis graduate work.The Globalink program, sponsored by the Province, was pioneered in B.C. three years ago. It introduces B.C.

Celebrating SkyTrains Silver AnniversarySkyTrain pioneers and current lead-ers honour the past and celebrate the future of rapid transit in Metro Vancouver

After 25 years of service and 1.2 billion riders served, SkyTrain has reason to celebrate today.

Grace McCarthy, the for-mer minister of BC Tran-sit, whose government, under then Premier Bill Bennett, was responsible for launching SkyTrain 25 years ago, joined Min-ister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Member of the Legisla-tive Assembly for Peace River South, Blair Lek-strom and Fleetwood-Port Kells Member of Parliament, Nina Grewal to celebrate the systems silver anniversary at the SkyTrain Operations and Maintenance Centre in Burnaby. TransLink chief ?Q#"-

vis and SkyTrain presi-dent and general manager Fred Cummings, along with several past and present SkyTrain em-ployees, including four who were honoured for reaching 25 years with SkyTrain, also joined the event.

Our intention for the SkyTrain system was to nurture livable town cen-tre developments, move people without impeding other vehicles, enable multi use in the right of way and help sustain the overall environment, said Mr. Bennett. My hope is that we always stretch in this province to build innovative trans-portation excellence that serves our communities, economy and people.

Opening SkyTrain in ]|/"-ment for Metro Vancou-ver. It transformed the way we travel throughout

the region and made this great area one of the very best to live in, said Ms. McCarthy. I am proud to share this legacy with the long-time SkyTrain employees we are hon-ouring today.

Since the Expo Line ]|-tem has been expanded

to include the Millen-nium and Canada Lines. ~ $$has been invested by the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, TransLink and other partners since ground was broken in ]' #$ Q-ernment has invested in

SkyTrain through the Public Transit Capital Trust, the Gas Tax Fund, the Building Canada Fund and the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.

Looking ahead, another $2 billion in improve-ments are planned, many of which are already un-

derway, including build-ing the Evergreen Line, expanding SkyTrains operations and mainte-nance centre, installing faregates, introducing the Compass card, and improving accessibility. /$$]/$have been added to the system. All of these proj-ects will help meet grow-ing demand, better serve TransLinks customers and keep SkyTrain run-ning smoothly well into its golden anniversary.

Canada Restores Historic Identities of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army,

and the Royal Canadian Air Force

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Na-tional Defence, an-nounced today that the Government of Canada has restored the use of the historic designa-tions of the three former services: the Royal Ca-nadian Navy (RCN), the Canadian Army (CA), and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

Restoring these historic identities is an important way of reconnecting to-days men and women in uniform with the proud history and traditions they carry with them as members of the Ca-nadian Forces, said Minister MacKay. A country forgets its past at its own peril. From

Canadian ranchers of live breeding cattle, sheep and goats will now benefit from access to Vietnam-ese market worth up to $50 million. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, In-ternational Trade Minis-ter Ed Fast and industry announced today that this market access will lead "

The Vietnamese market is now reopened to live breeding cattle, sheep and goats and trade can resume immediately, said Minister Ritz. After more than seven years of hard work in collabora-tion with the industry, this is a great success that

Canadian farmers and their families know that international trade is fun-$ "-cial security, and our gov-ernment wants to help them through freer trade and by securing access to new markets, said Minister Fast.
