China on Monday said itis ready to work withIndia to enhance politi-

cal mutual trust, properly man-age their differences and safe-guard the long-termdevelopment of bilateral ties.

Chinese Foreign Ministryspokesman Zhao Lijian said thisat a regular briefing when aWestern media journalistsought China’s reaction toPrime Minister NarendraModi’s remarks that the Indianarmed forces have given a befit-ting reply to those challengingthe country’s sovereignty.

Modi, in his 74thIndependence Day address tothe nation from the rampartsof Red Fort, said the armedforces have given a befittingreply to those challenging thecountry’s sovereignty “fromLoC to LAC”, in a veiled refer-ence to Pakistan and China.

“From LoC (Line of Control)to LAC (Line of Actual Control),anyone who casts an eye on thesovereignty of the country, thearmed forces have respondedin the language they under-stand,” Modi said.

Modi’s comments cameamid India’s bitter border row

with China along the LAC ineastern Ladakh and rise in inci-dents of ceasefire violationsalong the LoC with Pakistan inthe last few months.

Responding to the question,Chinese foreign ministryspokesman Zhao said that “wehave noted Prime MinisterModi’s speech.” “We are closeneighbours, we are emergingcountries with over one billionpeople. So, the sound develop-ment of bilateral ties not onlyserves the interest of the twopeoples but also stability, peace, prosperity of the region and thewhole world,” he said.

“The right path for the twosides is to respect and supporteach other as this serves ourlong-term interests,” Zhao said.

“So, China stands ready towork with India to enhance ourpolitical mutual trust, properlymanage our differences, step-up practical cooperation andsafeguard the long-term devel-opment of bilateral ties,” thespokesman added.

In his speech, PrimeMinister Modi also said that“whether it is terrorism orexpansionism, India is fightingboth with determination.”

Made in India iPhone...The plant has already received over half ofits planned investment and is expected tobe fully operational by October.

Expansion of Wistron’s productioncapacity is in line with Apple’s mid-termgoals - adding newer models quickly into its‘Made in India’ portfolio. Sources said whilethe new facility in Narasapura (Karnataka)could be dedicated for the upcomingiPhone 12, its existing plant in Bengaluruwill be used to produce iPhone SE (2020).

The American multinational hadrecently confirmed that its next-generationiPhone 12 would be delayed beyondSeptember in global retail stores. ‘’Last year,we started selling iPhones in lateSeptember. This year, we expect supply tobe available a few weeks later,” ChiefFinancial Officer Luca Maestri had said inan earnings call without giving reasons.Analysts attributed the delay to lower con-sumer demand and manufacturing hur-dles during the pandemic.

In a change in stand, Apple is now bet-ting on India aggressively. While it beganlocal production with iPhone SE (1st Gen) in2017 at Wistron’s Bengaluru facility, it added6S a year later. However, both have nowbeen discontinued as newer models likeXR and 11 became popular. The shift has leftcapacity at Wistron’s facilities unutilised.

The move to produce iPhone 12 in Indiais part of Apple’s long-term plan to reduce

dependence on China. Initiatives such asproduction linked incentive (PLI) schemehave paved the way for further localisation.Currently, its largest partner Foxconn assem-bles iPhone 7, XR and 11 at its Sri City facili-ty near Hyderabad. The second generationSE handsets, launched in April, is currentlythe cheapest iPhone available in the marketwith a starting price of ~42,500. The iPhone12 (5G) range is expected to start at ~70,000.

Analysts at IDC, a market intelligencefirm, pointed out that iPhone SE (2020)became one of the top five sold models inthe above-~40,000 price range during theApril-June quarter. “Apple continued todominate the segment with a market shareof 48.8 per cent, followed by Samsung andOnePlus,” it said. ‘’Through the latestlaunch of its most affordable iPhone SE(2020), Apple is looking forward to encour-aging the transition of more users fromAndroid to IOS to gain share in the overallecosystem. It kept the top spot in the seg-ment, driven by strong demand for iPhone11”, analysts at Counterpoint Research said.

In fact, the overwhelming response foriPhone 11 accelerated Apple’s plans for localproduction of iPhone 12. Prior to that, two tothree-year-old models used to drive sales.

According to Counterpoint, Applebecame one of the fastest-growing brands inOctober-December 2019, driven by iPhone11 and XR. “Multiple price cuts on its XR(launched in 2018) device, thanks to man-ufacturing in India, helped. Additionally,

2019 saw the fastest rollout ofApple’s new iPhones (11 series) inIndia, with aggressive pricing anda good channel strategy.’’

50,000 trucks...He pointed out that financiersincluding Shriram Transport havebeen providing working capitalrequirements. With the lockdowneasing, things are improvingmonth-on-month, he added.

Meanwhile, an end to the holi-day from paying road tax onSeptember 30, among others, isalso bothering truck owners.

On June 9, the governmentextended the validity date of motorvehicle documents till September30. Balmalkit Singh, former presi-dent of the Bombay GoodsTransport Association, secondsIFTRT’s Singh. “Demand isextremely sluggish. Only 40 percent of the fleet is being utilised. Most transporters will not be ableto meet their commitment, lead-ing to a default. It’s going to be ahuge crisis if the moratorium isnot extended.”

Transporters have survived forso long because of the EMI holiday.High diesel prices and low freighthave also weighed on the business,he added.

Residential launches...The new launches also mark the compa-ny’s re-entry into the Mumbai market.

Despite a 56 per cent fall in residentiallaunches in the first half of the year com-pared to the second half of 2019, AnarockProperty Consultants believes that con-solidation in residential real estate isexpected to gain ground, and that brand-ed players may garner a market share of75-80 per cent. Sales declined by 49 percent during the period.

Brigade Group, which had deferred acouple of its residential projects, is alsoplanning to launch them in the secondand third quarters. Total investment inthese projects, located in Hyderabad andBengaluru, will be over ~1,000 crore.

“We believe that demand for residen-tial projects by bigger brands like Brigadewill continue to be there even in these dif-ficult times. Therefore, we will continue tolaunch new projects after a proper marketassessment,” said Rajendra Joshi, CEO,residential business at Brigade Group.

Some players, however, continue to becautious. “We will launch new projects, but before that we are waiting and watch-ing how this pandemic pans out. Demandis slowly coming to pre-Covid days,” saida Sobha spokesperson. The company’supcoming residential projects are locatedacross nine cities, with a total built-uparea of 14.36 million square feet.

In Mumbai, developers such asOberoi Realty are banking on Diwali tolaunch projects. Godrej Properties, which has 15 million sq ft of launchesplanned in FY21, is waiting for approvals."As long as regulatory approvals arereceived in time, we will go ahead withour planned launches. We will, of course, have to be agile and tweak our strategy ifneeded after gauging the market envi-ronment,” said Pirojsha Godrej in arecent interview with Business Standard.

Gaurav Kumar, managing director, capital markets and residential business,CBRE India, believes that the pent-updemand of the last six months, a reduc-tion in interest rates of home loans, theavailability of completed units, and the‘work-from-home’ imperative are expect-ed to contribute to a strong recovery in thesecond half of 2020.

“We are already seeing signs of arevival with sales in the mid-market seg-ment picking up across all metro cities,”Kumar said.

However, Amit Bhagat, managingdirector of fund management companyASK Property Investment Advisors, asksdevelopers to be cautious. "It is advisablefor developers to plan launches for afford-able and mid-segment housing in H2 of2020-21 since demand will graduallycome back. It will be prudent to do afinancial closure with tied up construc-tion finance to avoid overdependence oncash flow from pre sales,” Bhagat said.
