H M A FRATERNITY OF PRIESTS ALTERNATIVE

TO HEALING MASSES Dear brothers and sisters, Many have expressed their desire (and perhaps a need)

for the return of Healing Masses sponsored by the Fraternity of Priests. We've prayed, discerned and discussed how we might meet your needs, and for us to live the gifts we have received through the Holy Spirit.

To this end, we have (at this time) decided to pray for "Words of Knowledge" each Wednesday following our Holy Hour and Adoration. This is akin to when the priests prayed prior to a Healing Mass, asking for insight as to God's plans to touch His people for that night and beyond. What we will miss is the personal contact that often times reveals the fire of the Holy Spirit coming upon and working through us.

On your part, active participation is necessary. The first need from you is faith that God hears your prayers and will answer for your betterment. The second is, if possible, prayer anytime between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Words of Knowledge we receive will be disseminated through emails of individuals we had gathered at prior Healing Masses, emails sent to us, and on the Pittsburgh-Greensburg Fraternity of Priests Facebook page. In time, we may include a YouTube viewing with priests reading the Words of Knowledge. We ask that you share this information with others throughout the diocese for their benefit. And when you receive a healing -- please inform us so all can share in God's goodness.

Finally, you may ask for special prayer intentions -- such as a healing of cancer -- by contacting one of the priests listed below, using our diocesan emails, by Tuesday evening of each week. When doing this please be as specific as possible, including at least a first name of the person needing healing. "A special intention" or "an end to the coronavirus" are not specific intentions.

11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please check the website for details. Safety guidelines remain in place including seating in designated areas only, the use of masks, hand sanitizers, and social distancing.

Confessions – Confessionals do not meet public health safety requirements. Penitents must practice social distancing and all other safety guidelines. No appointments are needed for reconciliation at the St. Patrick Parish Center: Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon.

Fr. Tom Galvin will be at the side entrance (through the gate) to the Center. A chair will be available for the penitent who will be outside (under cover) and will be able to speak through the door, left slightly open. A screen will provide anonymity for the penitent. The line will form across the street (Hutchinson). There are markings on the pavement for social distancing.

Appointments are needed for confessions at: Miraculous Medal Site — Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Please call 724-222-1911 by Thursday. You do not need to give your name. These are held with Fr. Carmen in the rectory entrance at the mail slot.

St. Patrick Site — Appointments with Fr. Tom Gillespie may be scheduled by calling the parish office at 724-745-6560.

Holy Rosary Site — Appointments with Fr. George DeVille may be scheduled by calling the church office at 724-745-3531.

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals can be scheduled but with the restrictions of no more than 25% of capacity. Great care must be given to social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitization precautions.

to make reservations for weekend Masses. Those who attend Mass on Saturday or Sunday will still have to sign in so we will have a record of those attending per request of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. We will welcome people in the order in which they arrive at the church until we reach our 25 percent capacity as required by the Diocese.

If you receive a text or email apparently from a member of the staff, often claiming to come from Father Carmen, asking for you to reply, or to send gift cards, but the phone number doesn’t match that staff member’s phone number on the back of the bulletin, it is a scam. Block that number and delete that text and email. You will know it’s not from Father Carmen if it is signed something like: “...Rev. Carmen D’Amico”. He doesn’t sign texts that way and he won’t ask you for gift cards.

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson The concept starts out innocently enough. The patient

elementary school teacher says: “Boys and girls, when you color, try not to go outside the lines.” Later on in life, other teachers come along with a direct order: “People, maintain a margin when you write by hand or type a text on your computer. It is an expected courtesy.”

We learn on our own that polls feature another type of margin, what the industry jargon calls “a margin of error.” One more instance of margins appears with the sad fact that in our American society certain of our brothers and sisters are actually “marginal people.” That’s a euphemism for people who, for predetermined reasons, are considered “the outsiders.”

The Gospel perspective detests that label. Because Jesus did. It is true that His Jewish contemporaries held that Gentiles, as idolaters, were of a lower class. They had no such word as “marginalized” in their language, but they would recognize the concept. It would take the example of Jesus Himself, and later on of St. Paul, to break down that inherent hostility.

It seems that Our Lord Himself had to learn in His human nature that His mission was not to be boxed in by this kind of thinking. It was to be universal. Listen to that reaction of His to that unnamed Canaanite woman who is the unsung hero in the story. After all, she had a lot against her in making a request of this famous Nazarene. She had reason to be nervous. First of all, she is a woman alone in man’s world. But if that were not enough, she is a Gentile. Do those impediments stop her? Definitely not! Being a maternal caregiver with a very sick daughter, she works up the courage to ask this popular Nazarene to cure her charge. Then He retorts with a line that would put off any sensitive type: “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” Dogs, you say? She thought. Undaunted, she pipes up: ”Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the tables of their masters.” Respectful but insistent. Ultimately very faith-filled. Our Lord zeroes in on that faith of hers and cures her daughter instantly. Any onlookers among the audience, both Jew and gentile, had to have been stunned and puzzled.

So where does that woman’s story leave us? For one thing, it’s an opportunity to examine our list of labels for other people. Even the best of us have them, deep inside and mostly muzzled. But they’re there. Who do we “marginalize?” Who are “outside the lines” that we draw in our imaginary album of people we know or even don’t know? Who are the good and the bad in our “book?” Does this gospel make us uncomfortable? And where does our faith in Jesus fit into the picture? Good questions. But tough questions. It’s always going to be that way for people with a right conscience who claim to follow Christ. People like you and me.

There is a call here to consider what being grateful for your gift of faith means as you approach that same Nazarene in the Eucharist today. I’m always a bit nervous as I near Him. But that that long gone Canaanite woman is my hero. She inspires me to get out of my preconceived notions. Past any trace in me of that nasty margin of prejudice. I can add to that the definite truth of what an unknown wag hit upon when he opined: “Some people’s minds are like concrete: thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.” God love you and give you His peace!

Reading I: Isaiah 56: 1, 6-7 Foreigners, or Gentiles, living within Palestine were given limited rights by the Jews. This arose because a certain universalist tendency now held sway among the Jews of this prophet’s time.

Reading II: Romans 11: 13-15, 29-32 God’s gifts and calling are given both to Jews and Gentiles. Paul definitely believes this. For him, who was always conscious of his Jewish origins, it became a clear belief that Jews and all others will be saved through God’s mercy.

The Gospel: Matthew 15: 21-28 The Canaanite woman is doubly marginal: she is a woman in a man’s world and a Gentile. She uses Our Lord’s “dog” imagery to make a frank but humble reply. He recognizes the universality of His Father’s call; admires the woman’s faith, and immediately heals her daughter.

IV. LA VIRTUD TEOLOGAL DE LA ESPERANZA:

¿Cómo debe reaccionar un cristiano ante el mal, los problemas, las dificultades de la vida? Hay quienes caen en el desaliento y piensan que no hay nada que hacer, que todo es inútil. Hay otros que dicen que nuestra esperanza es ingenuidad e idealismo. Hay quien nos dice que la esperanza es algo egoísta. ¿Por qué no es propio de un cristiano el desaliento y la desesperación? ¿En verdad Dios actúa en nuestras vidas? ¿Cuál debe ser la mayor aspiración de un cristiano?

1. Definición: Es la virtud teologal por la cual deseamos a Dios como Bien Supremo y confiamos firmemente alcanzar la felicidad eterna y los medios para ello.

2. Fundamento: Vivo confiado en esta esperanza porque creo en Cristo que es Dios omnipotente y bondadoso y no puede fallar a sus promesas. Así dice el Eclesiástico: “Sabed que nadie esperó en el Señor que fuera confundido. ¿Quién que permaneciera fiel a sus mandamientos, habrá sido abandonado por Él, o quién, que le hubiere invocado, habrá sido por Él despreciado?Porque el Señor tiene piedad y misericordia” (2, 11-12).

LAS VIRTUDES TEOLOGALES 3. Efectos: a) Pone en nuestros corazón el deseo del cielo y de la

posesión de Dios, desasiéndonos de los bienes terrenales. b) Hace eficaces nuestras peticiones. c) Nos da el ánimo y la constancia en la lucha,

asegurándonos el triunfo. d) Nos proyecta al apostolado, pues queremos que sean

muchos los que lleguen a la posesión de Dios. 4. Obstáculos: a) Presunción: esperar de Dios el cielo y las gracias

necesarias para llegar a él, sin poner por nuestra parte los medios necesarios.

b) Desaliento y desesperación: harta tentados y a veces vencidos en la lucha, se desaniman y piensan que jamás podrán enmendarse y comienzan a desesperar de su salvación.

5. La Eucaristía, prenda del mundo venidero: La esperanza de la venida del Reino se realiza ya de manera misteriosa y verdadera en la comunión eucarística. La comunión es el comenzar a gustar esa promesa del cielo y alimentar el deseo de la posesión eterna. Es una anticipación de la vida eterna aquí en la tierra. Y es la seguridad y la certeza de nuestra esperanza.
