PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We the people of St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church bring together diverse giſts and backgrounds to form a growing vibrant community centered in the Eucharist, the source and sign of our unity. In pilgrimage to the Kingdom of God, our mission is to demonstrate God's presence and love through: worshipping together, spreading the Good News, serving others, and enjoying Christ-Centered acvies. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are commied to sharing our me, our talents, and our treasures to fulfill God's will for our parish. AUGUST 16, 2020 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflections on today's Gospel MATTHEW 15:21-28 (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7; Psalm 67; Romans 11:13-15, 29-32) KEY VERSE: "My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (v. 24). TO KNOW: Although Mahew emphasized Jesus' mission as primarily to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel" (v. 24), he intended to show that God's call had widened to include all people. In ancipaon of the Church's mission to the genles, Mahew showed Jesus breaking with his custom of ministering only to his own people. In the pagan area of Phoenicia, Jesus met a woman whose faith contrasted with that of the Pharisees and Scribes who opposed him. Mahew called her a Canaanite to remind his readers that these people had occupied the Promised Land before the Hebrew people seled it. The woman addressed Jesus by the messianic tles "Lord" and "Son of God" as she pleaded with him to heal her tormented daughter. When the disciples tried to get rid of her, the woman persisted, saying she was willing to take the crumbs that fell from the master's table. Impressed by this woman's great faith, Jesus healed her daughter that very moment. The Second Vacan Council's Declaraon on the Relaonship of the Church to Non-Chrisans (Nostra Aetate, "In this Age of Ours") states: "The Church awaits that day, known to God alone, on which all people will address the Lord in a single voice and serve him with one accord" (# 4). TO LOVE: Do I respect the beliefs of those outside my community of faith? TO SERVE: Lord Jesus, help me to imitate your example of listening to other people's views. 1386 S. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We the people of St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church bring together diverse gifts and backgrounds to form a growing vibrant community centered in the Eucharist, the source and sign of our unity. In pilgrimage to the Kingdom of God,

our mission is to demonstrate God's presence and love through: worshipping together, spreading the Good News, serving others, and enjoying Christ-Centered activities. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are committed to sharing our time,

our talents, and our treasures to fulfill God's will for our parish.

AUGUST 16, 2020 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reflections on today's Gospel

MATTHEW 15:21-28 (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7; Psalm 67; Romans 11:13-15, 29-32)

KEY VERSE: "My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (v. 24).

TO KNOW: Although Matthew emphasized Jesus' mission as primarily to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel" (v. 24), he intended to show that God's call had widened to include all people. In anticipation of the Church's mission to the gentiles, Matthew showed Jesus breaking with his custom of ministering only to his own people. In the pagan area of Phoenicia, Jesus met a woman whose faith contrasted with that of the Pharisees and Scribes who opposed him. Matthew called her a Canaanite to remind his readers that these people had occupied the Promised Land before the Hebrew people settled it. The woman addressed Jesus by the messianic titles "Lord" and "Son of God" as she pleaded with him to heal her tormented daughter. When the disciples tried to get rid of her, the woman persisted, saying she was willing to take the crumbs that fell from the master's table. Impressed by this woman's great faith, Jesus healed her daughter that very moment. The Second Vatican Council's Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christians (Nostra Aetate, "In this Age of Ours") states: "The Church awaits that day, known to God alone, on which all people will address the Lord in a single voice and serve him with one accord" (# 4).

TO LOVE: Do I respect the beliefs of those outside my community of faith?

TO SERVE: Lord Jesus, help me to imitate your example of listening to other people's views.

We are so glad you joined us! If you are new to our parish, we would like to invite you to become a member.

The Welcome Booth in the vestibule is open the first full weekend of every month or come by the Parish Office.

Visit our website for a registration form or more information.

Due to generous response from our parishioners, it looks like we will make it through August with our

much-appreciated meat donations! For any of you wanting to fill the next need,

there is an ongoing deficit in our “household need” category: laundry and dishwashing detergent, bar and liquid soap, hand sanitizer,

masks, disinfectant spray and towelettes, any and all toiletry items.

The most requested & least donated items are: deodorant (clinical strength), diabetic needs such as diabetic socks, lotions & healing creams and diapers. We also seldom receive produce and diary products.

I hope this offers ideas to the many kind hearts we have here at St Raphael. Thank you so very much for your support to those families struggling

through this challenging time. For appointment please call 479-756-6711.

TWO NEW ZOOM OFFERINGS COMING SOON

Introduction to Personal Prayer Come to this group to grow or learn more about personal private prayer.

We will learn about the great tools St. Ignatius teaches as we pray with Scripture. Groups meet for 90 minutes each week for 9 weeks

and participants commit to at least 15 minutes of daily prayer. The fee is $40, all materials included.

Groups are forming now and will meet online via Zoom. All are invited. Pre-registration is required. Groups are led by trained facilitators.

Groups will start the week of September 21. We anticipate forming a day time and an evening group.

If you are unfamiliar with Zoom, use contact information below to get more information and guidance.

For more information, questions or to register please contact: Zola Moon, [email protected] or 236-4139

The Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor … a conversation with Laudato Si

(On the Care of Our Common Home, Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical) Coronavirus, protests, political divisiveness, rising inequality, pollution everywhere

… do we have reason to praise, to hope, to engage?

Pope Francis challenges us: “What is the purpose of our life in this world?

What is the goal of our work and all our efforts? What need does the earth have of us?

… Unless we struggle with these deeper issues, I do not believe that our concern for ecology will produce significant results.”

You are invited to join a group using the “See, judge, act” model of Catholic social teaching. We will pray with, reflect on, encounter together, and be inspired to action

by Pope Francis’ stunning encyclical, Laudato Si: On the Care of Our Common Home. Facilitated by Zola Moon, PhD (in Human Environmental Dynamics)

and a member of St. Joseph and St. Thomas Aquinas, the group will meet by Zoom for a little over an hour a week for eight weeks.

Each session will cover a portion of the encyclical with information, reflection, discussion, and ideas for personal prayer, reflection and action.

Pre-registration required. Contact Zola Moon at [email protected] or 479-236-4139 for more information & registration. You will need to be able to Zoom, and have a copy of Laudato Si, a Bible, and an open heart.

A copy of the encyclical can be found for free online at https://laudatosi.com/watch, ordered from Our Sunday Visitor or through Amazon.

Groups will begin meeting the week of September 14. Daytime or evening group will be formed, depending on interest.

Daily private prayer, which incudes Scripture, reflection and journaling.

Weekly small group meetings in which participants share their prayer experiences with each other.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You

into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into

my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me

to be separated from You. —Amen.

O my God, my only hope, I have placed all my trust in you,

and I know I shall not be disappointed. —Diary, 317
