Scholarship Opportunity, Future Angus Stockmen

Undergraduate students encouraged to apply for the $1,000 scholarship by Sept. 30.

The American Angus Association launched the Future Angus Stockmen program earlier this year to help equip the next generation of commercial cattle producers with the knowledge and tools they need to be successful. Thanks to generous support from Allfex USA, the Future Angus Stockmen program will award a $1,000 scholarship to a young man or woman involved in the commercial Angus business. “We are incredibly grateful to Allflex for sponsoring the first-ever scholarship through Future Angus Stockmen,” says Ginette Gottswiller, Association director of commercial programs. “This is a fantastic opportunity for any young cattle producer with an interest in building their future in the commercial Angus business, in addition to the many benefits associated with the Future Angus Stockmen program.” The winner will be notified in October 2015, and the scholarship presented during the Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show, Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan. Applications will be judged on the participant’s future agriculture career path, passion for beef cattle and leadership experiences within the industry. To be eligible, the applicant or applicant’s parents/guardians must have transferred or have been transferred a registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2012). They must also have an affiliate member code or a current membership with the American Angus Association. Applications are available for download online and must be postmarked by Sept. 30. Reference the application for more instructions on how to apply.

About Future Angus Stockmen The American Angus Association launched Future Angus Stockmen as an effort to impact young cattle producers through learning and networking opportunities, while also building a bond with the Angus breed and its member-driven organization. “Our goal with the Future Angus Stockmen initiative is to give young producers who want to play a role in beef production the jumpstart they need to be successful in the business,” Gottswiller says. “Strong skills in communications, marketing, data analysis and business planning are critical in our industry’s challenge to produce quality beef.” Future Angus Stockmen is aimed toward college-age or recent graduates who want to raise high quality Angus-based commercial cattle. The program will offer educational opportunities that teach participants how to thrive in the cattle industry, social networking to connect them with fellow producers and leadership development to instill an entrepreneurial spirit and drive to improve their businesses. Enrollment forms are now available online, and can be completed at any time. There are two options when enrolling in the Future Angus Stockmen program. Participants can choose to enroll 15 or 30 head, and receive substantial cost savings for valuable programs, such as GeneMax Focus™ DNA tests, AngusSource® or AngusSource Genetic, and MaternalPlus® or Beef Record Service enrollment. For more information on Future Angus Stockmen or the scholarship opportunity, visit www.angus.org.

Industry News & NotesTakeAdvantageoftheSituation

- John F. Grimes, OSU Extension Beef Coordinator

The beef industry is experiencing a truly unique economic situation at this time. Survey data indicates the nation’s cow herd is in the midst of a documented expansion phase. This is a direct result of historically high prices for all classes of beef cattle and a lessening of drought conditions across much of the country. The outlook for beef cattle prices for the next several years remains very positive. Depending on your situation, the current beef economic climate provides a unique opportunity for both buyers and sellers of breeding cattle. Both groups can take advantage of this situation by participating in the upcoming Ohio Cattlemen’s Association third annual Replacement Female Sale on Friday evening, November 27. The sale will be held at the Muskingum Livestock facility in Zanesville and will start at 6:00 p.m. The 2015 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Replacement Female Sale will provide an opportunity for both buyers and sellers to meet the need for quality replacements in the state. Consignments may include cow-calf pairs, bred cows and bred heifers. Females must be under the age of five as of January 1, 2016 and may be of registered or commercial background. Bred females must be bred to a bull with known EPD’s and calves at side of cows must be sired by a bull with known EPD’s. Pregnancy status must be verified by an accredited veterinarian through traditional palpation, ultrasound or by blood testing through a professional laboratory. Analysis must be performed within 60 days of sale. Consignments will also be fulfilling specific health requirements. Last year buyers had the opportunity to appraise 88 lots of bred heifers, bred cows, and fall-calving pairs. The sale included 52 lots of bred heifers that averaged $2,557, 29 lots of bred cows that averaged $2,580, and seven fall-calving pairs which averaged $2,971. The 88 total lots grossed $228,600 for an overall average of $2,598. Prices ranged from $1,200 to $3,700. The females sold to buyers from Ohio and West Virginia. Col. Ron Kreis served as the auctioneer. The current demand for bred replacement females is excellent and expectations are for this trend to continue for the foreseeable future. Consignments for the sale are due to the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association by October 1, 2015. Sale information can be obtained by contacting the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association at (614) 873-6736 or at their web site located at www.ohiocattle.org . If you have any questions about the sale, you can call me at my office at (740) 289-2071, Extension #242 or contact me by e-mail at [email protected]. Please consider this sale as an option for both buyers and sellers to help contribute to the improvement of Ohio’s beef cow herd.

From competitive events in the showring to a prestigious honor for Angus breeder Dave Nichols, Bridgewater, Iowa, the week’s activities begin Sunday, Nov. 15. All shows will begin at 8 a.m. in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC) Freedom Hall. The Angus Junior Heifer Show takes place Sunday, Nov. 15; the Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) shows for bulls, cow-calf pairs and females (in that order) will be Monday, Nov. 16. Bruce and Amie Stertzbach of Louisville, Ohio, will judge the ROV Show. The junior show judges are to be announced. If you’re exhibiting at the NAILE, the entry deadline is Oct. 1. The ownership deadline for the Angus Junior Heifer Show is Sept. 15. For more information or to submit entries, visit www.livestockexpo.org.

Saddle & Sirloin Induction Ceremony Nichols has been selected as the 2015 inductee into the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery, largely considered the highest honor in the livestock industry. Nichols is a current member of the American Angus Association Board of Directors, and Nichols Farms has grown under his leadership to encompass 5,500 acres, 1,500 head of breeding stock and a small feedlot. The Saddle & Sirloin Club will honor these and Dave’s other industry contributions, too numerous to list, during a special program and portrait unveiling at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the South Wing Conference Center of the KFEC. Supporters can purchase ceremony tickets or make charitable gifts toward portrait and banquet expenses in Nichols’ honor. For more information, visit www.nicholssaddleandsirloin.com. If you are attending or exhibiting at Angus events in Louisville, Ky., please plan now and secure a hotel room. The Crowne Plaza will serve as the Angus headquarters hotel, and rooms are available for $135 per night. Give them a call at 1-888-233-9527 or go online for more information. The room block ends Oct. 16.
