Welcome to the Wessex truck Show 2016, here at the

Yeovil Showground in the heart of Somerset.

Once again, we can say we are bigger and better than previous years - in fact this is the fourth year and with nearly 600 trucks booked of all sizes and diff erent aspects of life plus more trade stands, this really is, our biggest show yet.

The main ring attraction this year is the quad stunt rider the Kangaroo Kid along with the popular return of the Mac Tools Cruiser Monster Truck. Add lots of various ring parades, and there really is something for all the family to watch and enjoy.

Once again, please note the care and hard work these truck drivers take to make their trucks look pristine. Most of the trucks here this weekend work very hard for fi ve or six days a week, all over the country, and it is certainly a credit to the drivers how they look after them.

A new feature this year is our Kids Zone with games and fun for the little ones to enjoy. Look out for Snow White, Wonder Woman,

estoration projects can be fraught with problems. The time needed to spend on it, the money, the access

to original parts - it’s enough to put anyone off . But for this beauty, lovingly restored by a family from Inglesbatch, it’s been worth every penny and every bead of sweat needed to regain her former glory.

The 1971 AEC Mercury was bought brand new in the June of that year by Maria Pulsford’s grandfather, Mr Scurlock. Initially used by him, Maria’s father Dave later took on the lorry and worked the local area moving muck away, aggregate and stone from local sites. The lorry, a real workhorse, was retired in the early nineties, which is where Maria’s husband Gary takes up the tale.

“It had been left there rotting away for 20 years,” Gary recalls. “One night at a family meal, we made the decision that we’d restore it. Having done 35 old tractors, we weren’t shy of restoration but we’d never attempted a lorry before.”

The family got off to a great start when it started fi rst time, having only been moved two or three times in two decades. Gradually,

over the past two years or so, a small group of devoted people, family and friends, have completely transformed the looks of the ailing AEC into what you see here today, a marvellous Mercury.

Gary continues. “Maria’s dad Dave and his friend Colin Parfi tt worked on it, four days a week for quite a while and they have been helped invaluably by our daughter’s

boyfriend Dan who’s a fi tter by trade.

“We found it far more complicated than a tractor refurb; there’s the wiring, the cab area is more complicated, the MOT specifi cations etc. In total, we have spent between £8,000-£10,000 restoring the lorry.

“The pistons were diffi cult to obtain as were the AEC letters for the front. Online auction sites were a godsend though as we wanted to restore the original wherever possible to keep the

authenticity. It has a brand new body but built to the original spec and it has a working tipper too!”

For Gary, this might be his one and only project. For Gemma’s partner Dan, though, he’s already working on a 1938 Bedford WS his grandfather previously owned.

Judging by the job done on this Mercury, you just know it’s going to be a brilliant Bedford!

Where do you start with the last few runs? The London Marathon three years ago where he fi nished the race, had a pub roast dinner, said goodbye to friends and ran home, arriving on Tuesday. Not to mention attracting the attentions of puzzled policemen on the night shift – “One offi cer stopped me, checked what I was doing and for the rest of the night, his colleagues went past me to check I was still okay – a nice touch.”

He’s done coast-to-coast runs in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales; the Welsh one ended with him taking part in and completing

How did you get here today, folks? Car, motorbike, cycle? Many of you came by lorry of course.

Locals would have walked, others by public transport. But, and take a deep breath, one man has run more than 300 miles to get here and, life permitting, he’ll be here sometime on Sunday lunchtime, running into the main arena in aid of one of the Wessex Truck Show’s chosen charities Time Is Precious.

No ordinary way of getting here. But then John Reynolds, a 54-year-old civil engineer from the Somerset village of Westfi eld, is no ordinary man. Struck down by a serious illness a dozen years ago, he found that running was his way of coping with the pain threshold; the more he ran, the easier getting around was but now, the term ‘ultra runner’ doesn’t do him justice. But let John take you back to 2003.

“I’d been diagnosed with a thyroid condition,” he explains, “and was undergoing radiotherapy treatment in the Royal United Hospital, Bath. While I was there, I saw lots of children with life-limiting conditions and they inspired me to get up and about and just keep going.

“One day, I went out to do some gardening that needed doing, got back and found I could actually keep going. I realised soon after that if I kept exercising and kept exerting myself, the seizures I was getting would stop!”

This was impressive to those he knew, particularly two cousins he was especially close to. “Stephen and Phil were like brothers to me, we had all grown up properly, and were so supportive.

“The training was going well, I was getting healthier and after completing a 10km race, I entered

the Midsomer Norton half marathon which I completed. Stephen was delighted for me so I promised him I’d do a marathon next.”

Sadly, Stephen died of heart failure but John, not a man to break his word easily, was determined on fi nishing the 26.2 mile race. “As a tribute to him, I looked for a marathon that was run on Stephen’s birthday, October 29, but the only one was in Snowdonia!” The mountainous race, one of the hardest around, was duly completed in six hours and the tribute was fulfi lled.

More awful news was to follow. Phil, the other cousin, was diagnosed with liver cancer but had a strong shoulder close at hand.

“Phil had seen how running had helped me cope with my illness and wanted to know if he could do the same,” says John.

“I told him he could and that we would set up a training programme for him to go and run a half marathon. We started positively and trained with the goal and I told Phil that if he fi nished the race, I’d do an ultra marathon.”

Tragedy followed. Two weeks before his long awaited run, Phil sadly suff ered a haemorrhage and died; again John then kept his promise and, having seen the work of the Children’s Hospice South West, decided to run between their two sites. Not a problem except that one is in Fremington, near Barnstaple and the other is in Wraxall, near Bristol. Just the 110 miles then, John!

That run was not just his fi rst real ultra run, it was more of an extreme run. Lasting nearly 28 hours and needing a support vehicle as back up, this was a serious distance. Yet more was still to come from a man who, just a handful of years before, could barely walk.

to deal with my own illness, inspire others to get out there and help themselves and raise money for Time Is Precious.

“TiP was set up to support not just the children that are receiving treatment in hospital but also their families. Its aim is to make the whole experience more bearable for patients and families alike and I hope to raise a lot of money for them.

“It was seeing those children in the RUH during my radiotherapy that gave me the motivation to push myself harder but it’s something we all have inside us.”

the 2015 Bristol to Bath marathon, 203 miles checked off . “I also went for the record of miles run in a week and beat the old record with more than 20 hours to spare, a distance of 400 miles plus,” he mentions so matter-of-factly.

And so to today. The story continues next week with a marathon in Iceland but for now, just the 328 miles. Starting in Lands End on Wednesday, he’ll zig zag through Cornwall, Devon and West Somerset before arriving here on Sunday lunchtime.

It’s appropriate that John has the fi nal word. “I’m so lucky – I can help

As stuntmen go, Aussie Matt Coulter is up there with the best of them. His world-renowned act

involving using a quad bike to jump other vehicles makes him a popular attraction at all the shows he attends but with a back story that involves partial paralysis, a brain injury and even testicular cancer, it’s a wonder he’s even here at all this weekend.

The young Matt began life in the Victoria seaside town of Mornington, an hour south of Melbourne. His fi rst foray into racing came on two wheels, not four, when his Mum invested in a 70cc Honda. Unsurprisingly, the lad showed a natural ability and after quad bikes arrived down under, he soon began winning some serious silverware including winning championships in his home country as well as Italy and the UK.

These things develop and soon Matt was creating a career

performing at shows too. Trouble is though, you’re only ever a split second away from a crash and three in particular have shaped Matt’s life ever since.

In the early nineties, his attempt to jump a paddle steamer at a Cornish theme park came a cropper when he clipped the top of the steamer and landed face down in the water.

Despite the crowd’s fears, he was shaken but not stirred. A second visit to Cornwall, this time to St Columb, saw a crosswind thwart his attempt to leap a steamboat and he tore all the ligaments in his knee as well as suff ering partial paralysis.

He’s surprisingly upbeat about the accident though. “It’s good these days, I’ve had a knee replacement op now and I’m more mobile and not in pain anymore. It’s been like a new lease of life for me.”

The Victorian, now 47, had another bad experience with a paddle steamer when a fault with a ramp forced him to drop his bike in mid air and land awkwardly, badly breaking his leg in the process. At one point, the seriousness of the break suggested amputation below the knee was a possibility but the tough cookie persuaded the medics not to operate and on he went.

After returning to Australia to do some shows, he was hit by the news that he had developed testicular cancer. Typical though, his weekend show had to go on with the operation rescheduled for the Monday morning!

After a further crash which ended in severe bruising to the brain, Matt semi-retired in 2005 and went from the Kangaroo Kid to the Comeback Kid when he returned to the circuit three years ago. Record crowds follow his exploits at shows and to his credit, he’s active on social media where his interaction with fans is as natural as his ability.

T he most recent fi gures available show that 113 cyclists died and more

than 3,400 were seriously injured on Britain’s roads in just 12 months.

Add to that the alarming stats that 20% of cycling fatalities involved an HGV and 25% of serious injuries were caused by a large vehicle passing ‘too close’ to the cycle, and it’s clear there’s a problem.

One company doing their best to bring down the fi gures and raise up understanding is Bikefi t Yeovil.

Aircraft engineer Nick James set up the company in his downtime from his job at

Yeovilton as something to do when he leaves the Navy in 2019.

The 37-year-old explains his role here at the Wessex Truck Show: “One of the major issues is when cyclists and HGV’s meet at a junction. As an HGV driver and a cyclist myself, I can see it from both sides.

“So what we are doing at the show is to set up some bikes alongside the lorry then invite members of the public to sit inside the cab and try to identify how many cycles are there.

“It will increase awareness from both cyclist and driver as to the problems faced by the other.”

A TRIBUTE TO HOW IT USED TO BE DONEA

sk Joe Public in the street to describe “roping and sheeting” and chances are, you’ll get some funny

looks. Depends on the age of the person you’re asking but the older they are, the greater chance there is of getting a right answer. One man here today is a master of the art and will be happy to give you the chance to learn from him.

Tony Thompson is a 60-year-old driver from Hull. With more than 40 years experience behind him, Tony has seen pretty much everything on the roads and in the business. Roping and sheeting of loads was once commonplace, but nowadays, it really is a dying art, something that saddens the Creech St Michael-based Yorkshireman.

“The days when the loads were roped and sheeted are almost gone,” he says. “Most lorries now are either Tautliners, curtainsiders or containers and you don’t see many fl at bed trailers around these days.

“Most things back in the 1970’s

were delivered on a fl at bed; food products, rolls of cables, loads of things and roping and sheeting was how you secured your load.

“Two half sheets along the length of the load and a fl y sheet across the top and secured down by the use of strong ropes.”

Tony himself drives a 16-year-old Scania V8 530 Tautliner these days for Westonzoyland fi rm Gary J Biddulph but he also owns an Atkinson truck, the one here today.

“When I worked for GE Wheeler of Bridgwater, a chap called John Donaghy was a top sheeter and I learned a lot from him; there was a pride in the work and the loads looked tidy and smart. They were secured with envelope corners with

dolly and double dolly knots.”Progress came and the use of

Tautliners increased. “I can see why they came in as they were more cost eff ective. Some fi rms still use fl at bed lorries but they’re made to use straps and ratchets now to tie down the load. There’s more that can go wrong these days so it’s not all better!”

Tony’s career is as colourful as his description of the art. Starting off in the Army in the 1970’s, he moved on to a Bridlington fruit and veg fi rm delivering potatoes to chip shops. His time with Wheelers saw him drive a brand new Seddon Atkinson and an ERF LV before moving on to the fi rst of several spells with Gillards of Burrowbridge, still roping and sheeting! Leaving Gillards 12 months ago, he now works for Biddulphs hauling containers around the UK.

So what’s his role here this weekend? “I’d love to get some good old father and son competition going, racing each other to see who can rope and sheet the quickest and best. There’s still a place for it these days!”
