NEWS FROM NAMALAKA Hello from the warm heart of Africa! We have had a fruitful time

so far. Friday we attended an ordination, 3 priests and 2 dea-

cons. Saturday we met with Namalaka parish leadership, dis-

cussed the Brendan Bowl program and visited 3 out churches,

Lupetere (the furthest north), Lugola and Saiti. There was much

singing and joy, which touched all of us. Sunday we had a

welcome Mass at Namalaka and we had Mass at the out church

that is the furthest south, Rashidi. It was another glorious

day. Then we stopped by Lunhena school, which is where the

Brendan Bowl will be moving next year. We also saw the

neighboring parish, Padre Pio. Monday we met with the Catholic

Women group and the youth and also toured of one of the health

centers. Tuesday we visited the sick and had other activities

before we moved back to the Bishop’s house. We have all been

touched by the joy and faith we find here. Zikomo Ambuye!

Old Testament

DAVID’S FIRST TRIUMPHS

1 Samuel 17: 38-18: 7

When it came to fighting

against the giant Goliath of the

Philistine army, young David knew

he couldn’t fight in King Saul’s

armor. So he chose to face the

giant with a simple weapon he

used to kill wild animals. Around

and around he swung the leather

that had a stone inside. When it

hit the giant, that was the end.

David was happy that he

had won his first battle, but there

were other battles ahead of him.

King Saul honored him at first for

his victory. But as time went on

the king became jealous. When

they entered each town or village

the women would come out

singing songs that made David

look better than Saul. From that

time forward, David had to be

careful for his life.

New Testament

THE BOY POSSESSED BY DEMONS

Mark 9: 14-29

When the Son of God was

“incarnate” of the Virgin Mary, that

means that the Son of God, without

giving up any of his own divine nature,

took on our human nature as well.

Imagine how furious and helpless the

demons must have felt! They swarmed

into the holy land, inflicting their terrible

illnesses and crises on the people who

were the weakest, hoping to spread

confusion and despair.

Jesus met many people who

were possessed by demons. One

worried father brought his child to the

disciples. They couldn’t cast out the

demons. Jesus, however, simply

commanded them to come out of the

boy. The demons obeyed the voice of

Jesus, because they knew exactly who

he was. Jesus reminded his disciples

that they must pray when they are faced

by evil and need a miracle.

LEARNING ABOUT

OUR FAITH

Knowing Prayers

by Heart

God loves to hear our

prayers. 1 Peter 5: 7

says, “Cast all your

worries on him,

because he cares for

you.” For this reason,

we know that the

simple prayers that

come from our heart

are heard by God.

It’s also important to

memorize certain

prayers. That makes it

possible for us to pray

together, and it also

makes it possible for

us to pray together

with all the Christians

who have ever said

prayers. Here are

some very important

prayers to know by

heart.

Our Father

Hail Mary

Sign of the Cross

Prayer before Meals

Alphabet Soup

P—Peter & Paul are

often mentioned

together. They

brought the good

news to Rome and

founded our great

Church.

Every person’s finances

and family situation is dif-

ferent. Jesus makes it

clear that it matters not

how much one gives, but

that it is planned, calculat-

ed, at least some-

from what is “leftover” at

the end of the month. We

propose the tithe (10%) as

the ideal every family can
