To Our Guests:Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.
The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.
If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found in this bulletin, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. You may put this in the offering when it is passed at the end of the service. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.
For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.
Nursery is provided during the service for children 2 years of age and younger.
Children ages three through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service.
If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).
Community Life:After the ServiceEach week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria.
Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together. Community Groups break for the summer months, but will resume in the Fall.
Bi-Weekly Dinner and Discussion on Work & Faith June 10 & 24; July 8 & 22; Aug 12 & 26 / 7PMJoin us as we discuss work and how it fits in with our faith and the kingdom of God. We will have 4 dinner/ discussions the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of June-August at the Adamson’s (1812 S Dearborn Unit 8). RSVP to Dan.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.
Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.
Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIPCan you imagine it, that God, who is greater than immensity, whose life is longer than time, that God the all-boundless One, should love you? That He should think of you, pity you, consider you, this is all very well—but that He should love you, that His heart should go out to you, that He should choose you, that He should have engraved you on the palms of His hands, that He should not rest in Heaven without you, that He should not think Heaven complete until He brings you there, that you should be the bride and Christ the Bridegroom, that there should be eternal love between Him and you—oh, as you think of it, lift up your hands with adoring wonder and say, “Your love to me was wonderful.” - Charles Spurgeon
Call to Worship — from Psalm 95O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
Prayer of Adoration O God, the author and foundation of hope, enable us to rely with confident expectation on your promises, knowing that the trials and hindrances of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed, and having our faces steadfastly set toward the light that shines more and more to the perfect day, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer of ConfessionEternal God, you do not change. You have revealed yourself to us in your Word. You call us to worship you in spirit and in truth.
But we confess that we often worship not your true self, but who we wish you to be.
We too often ask you to bless what we do rather than seeking to do what you bless.Forgive us for seeking concessions when we should be seeking guidance.
Forgive us when our worship shapes you into what we want, instead of shaping us into what you want.
Help us to meet you here, that we might bow before your unspeakable majesty, and so live for you now and ever, in Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Grace — Adapted from Hebrews 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter God’s presence by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with true hearts in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Thanks be to God!Brothers and Sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?
We do.

God Speaks To Us
Sermon Text — Psalm 45 1 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe. 2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. 3 Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and majesty! 4 In your majesty ride out victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; let your right hand teach you awesome deeds! 5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; the peoples fall under you. 6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; 7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; 8 your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; 9 daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. 10 Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear: forget your people and your father’s house, 11 and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him. 12 The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people. 13 All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold. 14 In many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions following behind her. 15 With joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the palace of the king. 16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons; you will make them princes in all the earth. 17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations; therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Confession of Faith — The Apostles’ CreedChristian, what do you believe?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci-fied, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

DoxologyWorship Through Giving
Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.
Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

SERVING THIS WEEK
SERVING NEXT WEEK
*In addition to congregational giving, 25% of our overall operating budget is currently comprised of financial support from other churches and individuals. Our budgeted congregational giving represents 75% of the overall operating budget.
Newer to Cityview? Go out to eat with a small group of regular attenders for lunch after the Sunday service. Today’s hosts are Malissa Mackey and Carolyn Sorock.
GATHERINGS & ANNOUNCEMENTSNO EVENING PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST We will pick back up our weekly prayer at the Adamson home starting in September.
BI-WEEKLY DINNER & DISCUSSION ON WORK & FAITH TUESDAY, AUGUST 12 / 7 PM Join us as we discuss work and how it fits in with our faith and the kingdom of God. We will meet at Lee Wing Wah (2147 S China Pl.) for dinner and a time of discussion.
Lee Wing Wah offers a special menu for larger groups (family/banquet style from 6 - 12 dishes). The cost will be approximately $15-$20 per person depending on how many show up and which menu we order from.
Please RSVP to Karen Lee ([email protected]) by August 10 so we can make the appropriate sized reservation.
HOST A SUNDAY LUNCH! Help us welcome those who are newer to Cityview by hosting a Sunday Lunch. It’s a simple commitment- just pick a nearby location and eat lunch with some other folks on a Sunday after church. We still need a few hosts for the next few months. Please contact Dan Adamson or Carolyn Koonce if you would be willing to serve in this way.
AFTER-CHURCH POTLUCK SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH Join us immediately following the service for a potluck and congregational meeting to hear about the upcoming fall events at Cityview. Please bring a dish to share.
COMMUNITY GROUPS Community groups will resume the week of September 8. Details about group logistics will be coming soon.
