In the 1930s at the height of the Depression, 18% of the population of Vigo County received public relief. It was in this era that the Terre Haute Tribune-Star's Christmas Basket Fund distributed around 800 baskets in Terre Haute and another 125 in Taylorville (West Terre Haute) during the holiday season.

At an especially difficult time for families in need, this decades-old tradition still helps hundreds with its Christmas Eve Day delivery of baskets piled with ham, vegetables, dinner rolls, milk, bread and pumpkin pie, as well as a book for each child in the household.

Baskets are funded through the generous donations of businesses and individuals in the community. Last year the fund raised $25,200.23, surpassing its $23,000 goal, and provided enough food for 600 needy families.

Last year’s giveaway was organized by Kim Wilkerson and Michelle Poorman of the Tribune-Star, with more than 100 volunteers

delivering the baskets. Assisting in the effort were B & B Foods, Boo’s Crossroads Café, the Salvation Army, Baesler’s Market and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.

A New EndowmentIn August, the Tribune-Star set up the Tribune-Star Christmas Basket Fund as an endowment fund with the Community Foundation, one of the newest funds established by a local business to benefit the community.

Tribune-Star Publisher B.J. Riley said the endowment fund supports the newspaper’s annual effort to provide local families a special holiday meal. “We welcomed the partnership with the Wabash Valley Community Foundation because we knew we were dealing with folks that understood the community and understood fundraising,” Riley said. “As money is collected, the Foundation helps with the tracking of the donations as well as communication with the donors.”

Fighting Hunger - An Update

With as many as one in four Wabash Valley children under 18 living in households that are at risk for being able to provide adequate nutrition, the effort continues to stamp out hunger in the Community Foundation’s three counties. In addition to the Tribune-Star Basket Fund, the Foundation has these endowment funds that address food needs in the Wabash Valley.

•ForVigoCounty, theBackpackEndowmentFundbenefits school children who do not know when, where or what they will eat from Friday at noon until Monday morning. The Backpack Program provided weekend food to be taken home by over 600 Vigo County students each week during the 2012-2013 academic year.

•ForSullivanCounty, theBrownBaggerSchoolFoodProgram Endowment Fund addresses this same need for Sullivan County school children. This year, the Sullivan County Community Foundation will match $1 for every $2

contributed to this fund, up to a maximum of $32,500. There is still time to donate to take advantage of the match, but you must do so by December 31st!

•ForClayCounty, theTargetingHungerFundisanewfundthat provides grants to various organizations that supply food to those in need.

•GrainforGoodisaprogramdevelopedbytheFoundationto encourage farmers to designate a portion of their grain harvest to the Foundation so the earnings can be used to purchase food for the Brown Bagger and Backpack programs.

•TheCatholicCharitiesEndowmentFundbenefitsallthree counties by being the single largest source of food for emergency food programs in the area. The Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank operates as a warehouse and distribution center, serving 90 member agencies and 11 mobile pantries in seven counties.

It’s not too late this year to make a gift from your IRA to charity, help the Community Foundation fulfill its mission and at the same time reduce your tax burden. You can accomplish this with an IRA Rollover.

If you are 70½ or older, the January 1, 2013, fiscal cliff law allows you to make a charitable gift of up to $100,000 from your IRA to meet your annual distribution requirement, and you will not have to pay federal income tax on the amount given from your IRA to charity.

Contact your IRA custodian to make a gift from your IRA for 2013. The IRS will treat the amount of the cash gift as if you had made a direct rollover to charity, and you can then avoid federal tax on the amount of the gift.

Don’t wait! Contact the Wabash Valley Community Foundation today to learn more about how you can convert your taxable IRA distribution and potentially reduce your taxes.

If you are already retired or are planning for your retirement in the near future, wouldn’t it be reassuring to know that it is possible to count on a fixed income that never changes and at the same time help a charity of your choice? While your investments in the stock and real estate markets fluctuate, true security can be yours with a Charitable Gift Annuity with the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.

A charitable gift annuity is a contract between you and the Foundation. You transfer cash or property to the Foundation and receive income for life at a rate based on your age. A portion of your income stream may even be tax-free, and you will receive a charitable deduction at the time you make your gift.

The Foundation can make the promise of a stable source of income because it is backed by all of our assets:

•ourreserveaccount,asrequiredbystatelawtomakeannual payments to all annuitants; •ourendowmentfunds;and •ourrealestateandproperty.

It’s possible that your fixed income could begin immediately. However, if you are not ready to begin receiving income until a future date, such as when you retire, you can establish a deferred gift annuity. In this case you will receive a current charitable income tax deduction and receive payments at a designated future time. Because you deferred your payments, your annual payment will be higher than with a current annuity.

Contact the Foundation about a Charitable Gift Annuity and flexible date options for your future income.

The United Way of the Wabash Valley and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation are partnering to sponsor training and development opportunities for the board members, staff and volunteers of local not-for-profit organizations. The series is designed to be both accessible and affordable to help nonprofits strengthen their missions and better serve their communities.

Workshops are offered on the second Wednesday of October, November and December in 2013 and March, April and May in 2014 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Corporate Square. The December 11th topic is Finances for the Non-Financial, a review of financial statements and analytical tools for nonprofits presented by Lynn Greggs.

Topics for 2014 include Characteristics of a Highly Effective Board, Purposeful Committees and Making Them Work, and Outcomes: Telling Your Story with Results.

For more information or to register for a future workshop, contact the Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network, a service of Indiana United Ways, at www.inrnwest.blogspot.com or call the Community Foundation office at 812-232-2234.

Phil Purcell led the discussion at the Not-for-Profit Learning Series Workshop, Engaging Boards in Sustainable Funding, on November 13th.
