Fundamental tool to answer recurring questions In this newly revised and expanded edition About the Bible: Short Answers to Big Questions, Terence E. Fretheim offers straightforward answers to recurring questions about how the Bible was written, organized, and interpreted—and why people have such different opinions about what the Bible has to say. Built on a bestselling volume first introduced to readers in 1999, this edition welcomes added questions to a unique question-and-answer format. Among the questions are: Who wrote the Bible? How did it come to be? Do Lutherans believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible, for instance the Creation Story? Can we draw responsible ethical discernment from the Bible? How do we read the Bible for spiritual growth?

Arranged according to topic, the book is ideal for individual and group use. Both devoted Bible readers and Bible novices are sure to find answers to many of their biggest questions here. Terence E. Fretheim is Professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fretheim is the author of The Suffering of God: An Old Testament Perspective and coauthor of The Bible as Word of God (both Fortress Press).

Encountering new faith experiences For Madeleine L’Engle, the world is full of beauty, mystery, grace—intimations of the divine. This beloved American author best known for her Newberry Medal-winning book, A Wrinkle in Time, and other Young Adult fiction, captured the hearts of many generations. Her writings often explored the intersection of faith and art, science and fantasy, grace and redemption. Editor Isabel Anders draws from the best of L’ Engle’s fiction, non-fiction and poetry to invite the reader on a 40-day journey of incredible richness. With a short introduction to L’Engle’s life and work, questions to draw the reader into her spiritual world, journal suggestions, and daily prayers, this 40-day journey is an invitation to personal meditation and/or group discussion. An inspiring journey to take at any time, but especially through the seasons of Advent and Lent.

Isabel Anders is a well-known spiritual writer and speaker, and was personal friend of the late Madeleine L’Engle. Among her many books are: The Faces of Friendship, Awaiting the Child: An Advent Journal, and Soul Moments: Times When Heaven Touches Earth. 40-Day Journey with Madeleine L’Engle is her nineteenth book.

Unyielding, unrelenting, renegade hope With emphasis on its spiritual and religious dimensions, Apprenticed to Hope: A Sourcebook for Difficult Times, is a compelling compilation of thirty-two essays exploring the nature of hope. Julie Neraas draws from a wide range of sources—literary, poetic, religious, and psychological—offering many different ways to think about hope. She draws upon her own experience with chronic illness, as well as what she has learned from places where hope is tested. She considers hope’s relationship with faith, the human imagination, and community; distinguishes authentic hope from optimism and false hope; and addresses contemporary questions about where we can look for sources of hope in turbulent times. Neraas encourages readers on their journey toward wellness in very practical ways through thoughtful reflection and discussion.

Julie E. Neraas is a Presbyterian pastor, spiritual director, and a professor in the Graduate Liberal Studies program at Hamline University, where she has taught since 1991.

Discovering an active God in the Christian faith The basic thesis is that Yahweh of Israel and the God who raised Jesus, often appearing throughout history to be “down for the count,” has an amazing comeback-ability. In the current postmodern context, where many despair of faith and seem to circle back to the 1960’s conclusion that “God is dead,” this book holds forth a reason to believe and a pathway to probe more deeply in contemporary images and language the age-old truth and traditions of faith.

Resourceful tool to enhance one’s prayer life Prayer is often identified as of first importance in the life of faith. At the same time, prayer is one of the least understood and least consistently used of spiritual practices among ordinary Christians. Prayer: A Primer clears up misconceptions and myths about prayer that often stand in the way of actually praying, and offers the reader “a way in” to a life grounded in and enriched by daily prayer. A variety of forms of verbal prayer, meditation, and contemplation (or the prayer of silence) are clearly described with the needs and questions of beginners at prayer in mind. The book aims—through prayer—to move beginners at prayer to a growing and deepening awareness of God’s presence in our complex and often morally ambiguous world.

Henry F. French is a retired Lutheran pastor and professor living and writing in rural Minnesota. He has served as a parish pastor and taught on the faculties of both the Lutheran Theological Seminary and College in Japan and Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Being Lutheran means being pro-immigrant By virtue of Lutheranism’s spiritual heritage and identity in America as an immigrant church, Lutherans are specially placed to give hopeful leadership about the controversial issue of immigration in the United States today. They Are Us explores the biblical, historical, theological, and cultural foundations for Lutheran participation in a public conversation that has important implications for the future of this nation. Based on professional experience and grounded in Christian faith, the authors make the case for immigration reform and call the church to a mission of evangelical hospitality.

Stephen Bouman is director of Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and former bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod ELCA. During twenty years as a parish pastor, he served parishes originally founded by immigrants as they became immigrant congregations once again. Ralston Deffenbaugh is president of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), one of the nation’s leading agencies in welcoming and advocating for refugees and other migrants. A human rights lawyer, he has worked since 1981 with Lutheran organizations concerned with international affairs and early in his career was heavily involved in Lutheran World Federation’s efforts for Namibia’s independence and an end to apartheid in South Africa.

Growing in faith through a deepening sense of place— No matter where you go, there is God— Placed in grace and graced by place— What difference does environment make in a congregation’s life and mission? A world of difference if understood and embraced, according to the authors of Church on Earth: Grounding Your Ministry in a Sense of Place. Focusing on the congregation as place—an unique nexus for cultivating spiritual, social, and ecological relationships—has implications for the shape of a congregation’s particular identity and vocation; for how it embodies and proclaims the Gospel in worship, education, evangelism, and service. A sense of place offers new possibilities for connecting Word and Sacrament more intimately and integrally with the daily life of parishioners and for enriching the congregation’s outreach to the surrounding community and world. Concrete examples for what this

means in a particular congregation are provided from the experience of Madison Christian Community, an innovative ecumenical partnership of Advent Lutheran Church (ELCA) and Community of Hope (UCC) in Madison, Wisconsin. Jeff Wild is an ELCA pastor serving Madison Christian Community, which was recently named a recipient of the Great Green Congregation award by the National Council of Churches. Peter Bakken is the coordinator for public policy for the Wisconsin Council of Churches and a member of Madison Christian Community.

An historical, theological, and practical review of the earliest of Christian practices Luther writes in his Large Catechism: “No greater jewel, therefore, can adorn our body and soul than baptism, for through it we become completely holy and blessed, which no other kind of life and no work on earth can acquire.” Of all Christian rituals, baptism, in its historical, theological and spiritual importance, warrants constant re-examination and careful dusting in an effort to polish and present the jewel passed on to us. In No Greater Jewel Luther’s teaching of baptism is unfolded in light of specific issues arising around Lutheran practices and understanding of baptism today. The wisdom of Luther’s words offers helpful perspectives for spiritual living and impetus for living with hope and ethical integrity in this world–inspired by the kind of love Jesus preached and demonstrated in his life.

A distinctive Lutheran understanding of the Bible Biblical authority and interpretation are frequently described as polarized between the voices of the right and the left, between conservative and liberal perspectives, between traditional and contextual ways of interpretation. While laying out the contours of these positions, The Bible’s Importance for the Church Today argues for an alternative: a perspective that is neither conservative nor liberal, that isn’t hung up on claims about the supernatural origins of Scripture but still insists that the Bible is more than an historically and culturally conditioned human product. The Bible’s Importance for the Church Today articulates a distinctive Lutheran approach to Scripture that stands in faithful and critical continuity with the nature of the Bible as the embodied memories of Jews and Christians in the formative centuries. Understanding how these texts function to shape

personal and communal identity is crucial for mature faith formation and moral deliberation consistent with the Lutheran theological heritage. Ritva H. Williams is Associate Professor and Chair of the Religion Department at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and Associate Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Davenport, Iowa. She is the author of Stewards, Prophets, Keepers of the Word: Leadership in the Early Church (2006).
