EDITOR’S COMMENTS BY ROLF HILL
Kudos to Jeff Brown, his crew and the New Castle
staff. The event was special this year for several
reasons, in my opinion. Besides the usual, greatly
organized and run event, Jeff did something
different. I’m sure he has a different name for it, but
I’ll refer to it as The Vintage Karting Conga Line. At
first, I was confused when Jeff was trying to describe it to me, but if
you were there, you will understand. We all lined-up on the edge of
the track and Jeff started the process by introducing himself as he
moved down the line. Everyone followed. I took a couple of
pictures to document the event, but perhaps more important were the
comments I heard as the Conga Line progressed …
“I’ve seen/heard your name, but now I can put a face to a name.” “I
always wanted to meet you.” “Oh, you’re …. Fill-in-the-blank.”
What a great idea! Nice job Jeff.
Kudos, also, to the Brodhead supporters and promoter. Sounded
like another great event. Sorry I missed it. (See p. 12).

MAY BOARD MEETING SUMMARY BY BILL BLOODWORTH SYNOPSIS: There are 353 total members, 315 full members
and 38 Associate Members. The ending April balance is
$19,339.34 which reflects revenue of $350.00 and expenses of
$3,079.69. Due to threatening weather, the Circleville event
schedule was compressed such that the demonstration and
show activities were run in a single day. The inaugural Sandy
Hook VKA event was an overall success with a combined total
of 50 karts entered into either the demonstrations or the show. Yamaha entries
were the most numerous with nine limited and five stock appearing entries. Sandy
Hook is a WKA MasterTtrack and owner Dennis Headley is adamant about
adherence to track safety rules. One participant was parked for not following
track safety procedures.
NOSTALGIA BY ROLF HILL
The President’s Cup Race was held at Upper Marlboro annually. The
track closed in 1970, but had quite a history. It was primarily an SCCA
track, and was the “playground” for such notables as • Jackie Stewart – 6/64
(Winner of 12 hour
Endurance Race)
• Roger Penske - 1967
• Carroll Shelby – 7/57
• Richard Petty – 5/59
• Carl Yarborough -
1967
• Mark Donahue – 4/67
(Winner Trans AM Series)
• Bill Scott, Owner of
Summit Point Raceway, VA
Upper Marlboro was also the home of the Competition Cart Club, and
vintage karters Ernie Shores and Rolf Hill.

SANDY HOOK RESULTS - CORRECTION BY ROLF HILL
I’m an idiot! Not only did I screw-up the heading for the Sandy Hook
Results in the Jun/Jul FIRSTURN© (thanks to Bill Bloodworth for fixing), I
used Heat One Results instead of FINAL results when I published the
Sandy Hook Results. Some of the classes did not change simply because
the Heat One results were the same as the FINAL results. Fortunately,
some readers noticed. Below are the CORRECT FINAL results as scored
by the organizers. Sorry for the mistake.

NEW CASTLE SUMMARY BY JEFF& SHERRI BROWN
Best event ever! Total registration was 140! (132 entries and 8
Practice-Only.) Weather was “toasty,” but a gentle breeze helped a
lot. Racers came from everywhere … West Coast to East Coast.
We hosted the usual appetizer social on Thursday and buffet on
Friday, which both were well attended. At the Friday gathering, we
recognized Vico (a new 12 year old who built his own kart), Steve
Welte, Don Renton and Bill Bloodworth for their superior
contributions to VKA and vintage karting.
We also inducted three great guys who have contributed
immeasurably to vintage karting into the Vintage Karting Hall of
Fame: Bud Bennet, Sonny Gerber and Kyle Adkins
(posthumously). Thanks to the Dismores and the New Castle crew.
And thanks to VKA and all who came to make the event possible.

BRODHEAD SUMMARY BY BILL McCORNACK We had great weather for the 81 entries and 8 Practice-Only karts. The
kart show had 63 vintage gems on display. We had a full day of practice
on Thursday and a full schedule, as usual, on Friday: two Heats and our
signature wine, beer and cheese tasting during the kart show, followed by
a catered dinner of pulled pork, turkey and sides. The 50/50 netted VKA
$400. The sale of new t-shirts brought in $520. I want to thank all the
help I got from Marshall Fairman, Mike, Joann and Haley Morrall, George
and Pat Sellon and Vern Bergman, and we all want to thank everyone who
came to the event.

KEN BURDEN MEMBEER MEMORY BY MIKE LOTZ
I recently talked with Ken Burden, Jr. (better known as “Cub”), and he told me
how his dad, Kenny, and Bob Jeffries (Big J) got together and some of their
experiences.
Kenny had a kart and a pair of 8.2 Power Products that he had ported. In the late
50s, he went to Findlay, OH, to race. As it turned out, Big J was there with Bobby
Myers who was driving his kart that had a pair of MC-10s. Before the race, Bobby
joked with Kenny that he would wave when he went by. The way I understand
it, Kenny pushed Bobby for four or five laps … then passed him before the
checkered flag.
When the races were over, they all went out to eat and drink some beer. Jeffries
kept asking Kenny what he did to the motors. Kenny would not tell him, but
Jeffries kept on pushing him for an answer. Finally, Big J told Kenny that if he
let him look at his motors, he would give him a kart and motors any time he
wanted. And that’s how they became a team.
In 1968, IKF asked them to go to the World Champion Race in Hong Kong. As
they were loading their stuff to ship, the people in China told them alcohol would
be furnished when they got there. To their surprise, when they got there they
This is the last kart Kenny
(The King) Burden drove.
VKA FIRSTURN© -16- Aug 2017 MMXVII No.5
learned the alcohol was the type used to de-ice airplanes… not methanol.
According to Cub, that’s why they ended up 2nd and 3 laps down.
When they finished the event, Cub told me his dad and Big J sold their kart and
motors to a British Prince or Duke (he couldn’t remember which). Then they used
the money to buy Mikey Allen’s Zip Kart and two BM 100s that won the race!
I remember in Barnesville Winter Nationals the following March, Kenny took the
Zip Kart out for practice. He made one lap and as he was coming down the front
straight, the brakes didn’t work. He shot off the end of the straight. They parked
the Zip Kart and pulled out a Lancer!
With a smile on his face, Cub explained the reason Kenny stopped racing was
“the long-haired kid” from Tennessee who kept winning. Kenny hated to lose.
Mike Lotz
This is the next to last
kart Kenny owned.

BRODHEAD – CONTINUED FROM P.14 BY BILL McCORNACK
The event was opened Friday by the singing of the National Anthem by
Mira from Brodhead HS on Friday and by VKA Member Matt Morgeson
on Saturday. Terry Ives from California was our special guest and
received the Longest Distance Traveled award. He also won C-Open.
(Next stop – Avon.) Terry Walters proudly displayed his coveted Master
Mechanics Trophy from 1966 IKF Nationals at Quincy … this is THE
“crowning jewel” of karting. Special Awards went to Ted Klingler for
Oldest Driver and Steve Welte for Outstanding Karter. Vern Bergman
presented a new “Bernie Cozad Award” to Jim Ryder for Excellence in
Karting. This year’s Champaign Celebration classes were B-Open and
C-Open.
