Sombre miserablist duet ‘Adullboy’ are two folk musicians who write swaying ballads about

the ecstatic joys of being a normal bloke in Scotland. Their home-brewed brand of acoustic mellow-rock combines woozy melodies with heartfelt and somewhat depressingly honest lyrics.

As a duo with a knack for easy going guitar parts and heavily accented Scottish vocals, Adullboy have managed to tour all over the country.

The band have an up and coming record

titled ‘Local Zero’ due for release soon, but before that they organised a Christmas themed EP, with the proceeds going to the ‘West Lothian Toy Appeal charity’ (which is nice so we’re not gonna take the piss too much.)

While pleasant to listen to and generally appealing and nice, one feels as though he could just fall asleep whilst standing up and hearing them, but that may just be because I’m 25 years old and into death metal.

STILL, the overall gloominess of the words combined with the inspiring happiness of the melody makes for an interesting listen. You can almost hear their inner goff calling out.

The dull boy himself, Robin Crosbie, says, “Sorry if this is a bit ramble-y, I’m not very good at this I s’pose...first time...” (Don’t

worry Robin, you were fantastic. Ready to go again?)

Therefore, my ultimate and unarguable analysis of Adullboy is thus, they create the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed night in with friends, perhaps a whiskey and some reminiscing about the time one of you did something stupid and ended up naked in a pond or something.

Their next gig will be held on the 24th of August at ‘Doune the Rabbit Hole’ in Stirling, a weekend long festival of musical indie madness and spoken word. I’d probably go, if I had the money for a bus ticket. *sigh*

West Lothian based femme-rockers ‘The Amorettes’ are a three piece group of hair swinging glam chicks determined to revive

the 80’s through music. Thanks to the success of their first album, ‘Hot and Heavy’, the girls have developed a huge fanbase both in and around the UK for their eighties style brand of blues rock riffage and femme-fatal attitude.

Over the years of constant touring and writing, The Amorettes, have been able to play sell out shows with some world famous

acts including legendary NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal) pioneers W.A.S.P. Last year, they played at the annual Scottish Tattoo Convention, which was much better than the previous years ‘extreme unicycling team’ with the chubby guy

from ‘The Limmy Show’.Proof once and for all that women can do stuff other than cook and make babies (some can’t cook).

Since then, the group have released a second successful album with the help of the second coming of Jesus (or Hef as he gets called now) at Live Rehearsals studio in Livingston (ED: at time of writing i don’t think this has been released yet man, did you get an advanced copy you jammy *%^& ??)

Furthermore, the band’s manager is a man named Jonathan Tait. He’s a kind of human filing cabinet crammed full of information about the inner-workings of the music biz, and he also heads a music college in Edinburgh called ‘The Academy of Music and Sound’.

The songs are generally quirky tracks with all the charm of a biker bar in Nevada, featuring three mental, musical mad-women. Perfect to drink all the beers to, and well worth checking out next time they breeze through you’re dusty little town.

In a quiet secluded park on the edge of Bathgate a small family fun-day has been growing each year to become

one of the biggest events on the music calendar in West Lothian. ‘The Friends of Kirkton’ have been hosting the event for a few years now and last year GoGuide Magazine attended the event to interview the bands and artists appearing. We enjoyed the day so much that we approached the committee behind the event and somehow managed to convince them let us ‘crash the party’ and host our very own area at the event. As a result we are hoping to bring you not only original music from some of the BEST home-grown and grassroots bands and solo acts in the local area but also some very special art shows from local art collective ‘Two121Two’ and a host for the day in the form of fast rising and local comedian Gareth Mutch.

The fun-day/festival is a chance to bring people together to appreciate Kirkton Park in all its glory and of course to lay on bundles of fun things for all the family with inflatables, stalls, face painters, clowns, displays, events and so much more, and of course let’s not forget the music side of things with no less than 3 stages at this year’s event from the Youth Action Project Acoustic Stage: A stage concentrating primarily on our amazing young musicians out these, our own Grassroots Stage: Helping to bring some of our younger musicians on to another level

and to give as many local bands the chance to play the only open air music festival in the area. And then there is the main Party In The Park Stage where we see a more family focused lineup with the likes of blues man Lewis Hamilton and Confusion

there is sure to be something for absolutely EVERYONE.

Now that’s where we come in as you probably guessed we are champions of the local music scene and will take any opportunity to blag on about it and promote it when and where we can…. Be it Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Blogging, Youtube and now, for the first time ever, were gonna bring it to your doorstep with the GoGuide Magazine’s Grassroots Stage and Music and Arts area which we will hopefully use to bring awareness to the our local music and arts scenes like no one has done before. We are also pleased to say that we have chosen our spotlight charity this year as the Mental Health Foundation and will have bundles of info etc. on hand in the GoGuide Gazebo.

So what’s on then I hear you ask?

Well, let me start with the GoGuide Gazebo ????

Pop along for a chat with ourselves and some of our local contributors to find out just what GoGuide Magazine is all about. You can also pick up some info from our chosen charity The Mental Health Foundation or some freebies from the bands playing on our stage throughout the day.

Next we have the ART Tent where we will feature work by local artists care of the ‘Two121two’ art collective. Two121two is a co-operative, not-for-profit art group with an aim to promote and exhibit the work of young, local artists and providing studio space, exhibition space, inspiration and guidance. We’re also hoping to convince the guys to create some ‘LIVE’ art on the day, inspired of course by the music and goings on

during the day.

And now to the big one, the ‘GoGuide Grassroots Stage’

Ummm what can we say?

For far too long has the local music in our area been forgotten about and shoved to the side in favour of ‘other’ flavours of music. When i say local music i mean proper creative music from musicians who are prepared to bare their souls to us and that write and perform music for other reasons other than a quick buck.

Well….

No more my good friends.

Our aim for the GoGuide Grassroots Stage is simple…. There is only 1 rule. Rule 1 = 100% LOCAL artists ONLY…. (Well ok, we might stretch things a little but you can rest assured that ALL our acts are, or have been, local boys and girls)

We wanna give our best and brightest, our newest and established, our young and our old the chance to play on a great stage on a great day…. To show people that what we have in our own back yard is just amazing. Who needs T in the Park when you can have true music, pulled from the heart from people who are not making millions of £. People who simply love what they do, and do what they do just for that, the love of making music for and playing in front of you guys, the public?

So get along to the GoGuide Magazine area at this year’s PITP and spend some time checking out the Grassroots Stage and I promise you will not be disappointed with what you hear.

HOST FOR THE DAY

Gareth is a young local comedian who has already bagged

some great experiences in a short time in comedy. Having

started Stand up when he was just 17 years old, Gareth has

gone on to play shows all over Scotland and other parts of

the UK including the Edinburgh Fringe Free Festival with his

show ‘Life, The Universe, Whatever’ with Gen Cytko and

Ray Fordyce. He also appeared in two national comedy

competitions including ‘Laughing Horse New Act Of The Year’

and ‘So You Think You’re Funny’.

Gareth also runs his own comedy night in Edinburgh at

The Counting House. ‘Comedy at the Counting House’ is a

monthly gig which is growing and becoming more popular

with both audience and acts alike.

DIXIE FRIEDTwo music lovers, who really dig the whole North hill country music

of North Mississippi. Signed to Glasgow Independent record label Big

Rock Candy Records in 2010, and released self-titled debut album in

the summer of 2011. Dixie Fried play the blues as good as 2 white

guys from Scotland can. So if you like deep down and dirty Mississippi

Blues Rock, then come and join the Dixie Fried train.

MICHAEL SHARPis a singer songwriter from East Whitburn that sits firmly in the ‘I can

play by myself acoustically or with a band’ category of musician which

makes me a tad jealous, oh… did I say he’s cute and super cool as

well? Just look at that photo over there.

Michael lists Jim Morrison, Jeff Buckley and Paulo Nutini as some of

his musical influences. Those are couple of pretty serious influences

to live up to but Mr Sharp does it with ease and has a dreamy

nonchalance about him as he treats you to tracks like ‘Alone’ and

‘Clear My Mind’

Mr Adrian McNab is an alternative photographer from Central Scotland

who specializes in everything from scenic snaps to live music shoots. By photogenically playing with light in his own unique and bizarre way, McNab manages to create stunning portraits of our little planet in all of it’s chaotic glory.

From captivating architectural scenes to the artfully erotic to the squintingly disturbing, each picture holds charm, like his collection of sky and cloud pictures which make space look like some sort of colourful celestial milkshake filled with cosmic ice-cream. His work with bands always seems to make an impression with the vivid rendering of colourization causing the band to stand out, beaming into your eyeballs and burning themselves onto your brain.

Adrian ‘ClickNab’ (pause for rupturous laughter) has worked with a multitude of fantastic artists from all over Bonny Scotland and has subsequently made a name for himself as one of our best underground

camera-ologists. His expertly exposed parade of creepy, gawking portraits all seem to stare judgementally through your eyes and into your soul as though they’d just been through your internet browsing history and are silently condemning you on the inside.

As well as the various ravey nightclubs, pyromaniacs, uninhibited models and zombies he likes to shoot, and not with a gun (pause for more hysterical laughter, thank you, thank you), Adrian finds inspiration in the strangest of places and manages to make even the most common, unassuming things seem like magical dream-scapes painted in neon.

5 uses for Coca ColaWhile it might do a good job of curbing a sugar craving, a

can of the Coke can be pretty handy to have around the

house too.

Top PolisherYep a quick once over with a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola

will bring your ornaments back to life. Citric acid within

the drink aids in the removal process without causing any

damage – Coke has PH of 2.5 whichj is less acidic than

lemon juice but more than apple.

Cooking with CokeCoke can be used as a cooking ingredient in lots of stuff,

being high in sugar it causes the liquid to caramelise producing a sweet, rich taste like honey marinade.

Super SoakerNext time you burnt a saucepan pour in a can of cola and

leave to soak for about half an hour. Then simply scrub off.

Processed Foods to Avoid

Chicken NuggetsChicken nuggets are more than 50 percent fat and they contain more carbs than protein. Keep in mind too, that the carb portion is made of very unhealthy carbs found in the fillers and breading. Most chicken nuggets are deep fried, often in an oil containing trans fat. Trans fat causes cell membrane deformities that contribute to the development of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes

HFCS has been shown to be damaging to the liver as well as causing blood glucose spikes even worse than normal table sugar would. They cause our naturally alkaline body pH to become acidic. Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment and can’t survive in an alkaline environment. An acidic body is also much more susceptible to viral and bacterial attacks since it weakens the natural defences of the body’s immune system.

Chicken NuggetsChicken nuggets are more than 50 percent fat and they contain more carbs than protein. As the summer grows to a steady close we’re gonna do one more truly summer feature before looking at some more autumn recipes next month. I love chorizo and I love salad…. So it’s simple for me, the sweet taste of tomatoes blended with the salty, spicy chorizo just makes my mouth water.

Preparation and cooking times

Prep time: 5 minsCook time: 5 mins

Ingredients

3 ripe beef tomatoes chopped into quarter wedges½ a thinly sliced, red onion. Handful of thyme sprigs with the leaves picked1 tbsp sherry vinegar2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil100g chorizo, sliced in whatever way you fancy. Or you can use the Chorizo ready sliced packets.

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty...

Throw the tomatoes, onion and thyme into a big bowl. Season the bowl as you prefer and drizzle on the oil and vinegar. Leave these ingredients in the bowl to soak up the flavours while you get to grips with the chorizo.

Using a hot, dry pan, throw in the chorizo chunks and cook until just browned on each side. When cooked, serve with the tomato mix and don’t forget to drizzled over a little of that awesome cherizo oil from the pan.

First stick your oven on to heat at around 220C, a little lower for fan assisted. Slice the peppers into halves along their length and remove the white membrane and seeds. If you like you can keep the outer stalk attached to make things look nice. Stuff the pepper halves with some of the basil, garlic and half a tomato.

Place in a roasting tin beside the chicken and drizzle a little oil over everything, season with some salt and pepper. Throw these in the oven for 25-30 mins until the chicken is golden and the skin is crisp. The stuffed peppers and tomatoes should be soft and wrinkled. Remove the chicken to a plate, remove the peppers but drain the pepper juices back into the roasting tin.

Put the tin on the cooker on a low heat and add a small amount of water. Tip in the beans and mix well and make sure you have got all the nice sticky and crunchy bits from the roasting tray. Add the remaining basil to the beans and serve on a plate with the chicken and peppers.

Sometimes It can be the easiest thing in the world to dismiss a game as just a copy and simply refuse to even play it for that reason. You

look at the screen shots and base most of your decisions on that. Ever thought you were missing out?

Sometimes a game can be heavily inspired by another but manages to bring some good, unique ideas and on rare occasions actually make you reconsider your take on the original.

Survivalcraft has actually been selling more than the game it was inspired by, that being ‘Minecraft – Pocket Edition’… BUT…. well for me anyway, I can’t really understand why? Survivalcraft is as close to a carbon copy as I’ve seen in a good while with just a tiny sprinkling of additions here and there that do little or nothing to better the original.

The premise of the game is that you have been stranded on a desert island.. You need to gather resources and craft together tools etc. and ultimately your aim is to survive, hence the title I guess.

Sounds familiar? Yeh? It has the same visuals and gameplay mechanics as MC and I’m pretty sure if you handed someone who had played MC before your device while playing it they probably wouldn’t initially realise it was a different game… only when they hit the proper interface would they actually click.

I suppose there is the wildlife?….where Minecraft leans more towards fantasy as the inspiration for their creatures, Survivalcraft simply focuses on your regular run of the mill type of animal..

Sure there is the pretty good social/community aspect of the game, where players can upload their creations, maps etc. for others to enjoy. It’s a pretty good platform but not sure it lifts the game enough to warrant a purchase.

People will no doubt Minecraft players on the lookout for a new fix that may get a kick out of this title but I would honestly look elsewhere as just too close to the original with not enough uneque content to be a real consideration for fans.

Unless you’ve been living under that proverbial rock for the past 6 months you will know all about that massively successful ‘4 Pics, 1 Word’ game? It was a

huge hit all over the globe with millions of Android users glued to their devices screens trying to guess answer to the fairly simple word that connected the 4 pictures in front of them. I don’t think there has been a proper update to the game for ages but the makers have now released a brand new game, ‘True or False - Test Your Wits’.

Having already been downloaded 1-5 million times you can probably guess, this is a simple true/false type game, but can it follow in the footsteps of its predecessor?

First off, there are two flavours of True or False, single player and multiplayer but gameplay wise both are the same. The aim of the game in both is easy, just answer True or False to the question posed to you in a reasonable amount of time. Questions come from a number of areas covering stuff like politics, literature and music.

The big differences come in the modes of play, with single player, you work your way through the game by solving one level after another. Each level changes in terms of what’s expected from you and questions can be trickily setup to test not only your brainpower but also you understanding of the questions. On each new level you get a set number of right answers to achieve some spare lives and free passes.

In multiplayer mode things really get a wee bit interesting. Two players get to compete directly against each other head to head. The screen is split and each player must work on the same statements against the clock.

Advertising is displayed throughout unless you connect the app to your Facebook. You can then share scores with friends and get access to extra lives as well as getting rid of the ads.

Graphics are nice and decorated entirely in a cartoon type style. Navigation is super easy so forget any need for instructions or time spent getting used to controls and stuff. Even on split screen multiplayer mode on a decent smartphone buttons still work fine.

The game has literally thousands of statements for you to answer and getting to the end is gonna take a while so it will take a good amount of time before you get anywhere near completing it, I’m guessing your attention span will wane long before the questionms do.

As Senior Personal Trainer and studio manager at TOD Coaching and Fit Inc Studio Gym near

Edinburgh, I come across similar problems with (almost) every fitness oriented person I talk to, the question usually arises (or doesn’t as the case may be) “What should I be eating?”Nutrition has always been my passion.

Away back in the day before nutritional qualifications, when you were either a dietitian or you weren’t, I was reading and researching nutrition and how it affected your health and well-being. I was interested in how people could be killed or cured with the food they ate, how it could affect weight, mood, skin, muscle, you name it, it was all relevant.

I weight trained, ran, cycled and hill walked, because I liked to do it. It was about this time that I started playing around with nutrition to see how it affected me (I still do this to this day, as I will never recommend someone do something with out trying it myself). How I

could lose or gain weight easily by altering my input and output. I became a vegetarian and my skin suffered as I became low in Vit. B12 because I didn’t understand about balancing my diet properly.

Basically nutrition breaks down into two parts, macronutrients, the big essential ones, proteins, carbs & fats, and micronutrients, still essential, but required in smaller amounts, these are vitamins and minerals.

Gradually I learned that nutrition could cure illnesses, reverse chronic health problems, improve fertility, make you stronger and faster, and make you bigger and smaller.

As I was also a keen ‘horsey’ person too, I discovered the diet of a racehorse seemed to be much better balanced than most humans! It contained such things as alfalfa, which we now call a ‘super food’. Alfalfa has been used as an herbal medicine for over 1,500 years. Alfalfa is high in protein, calcium, plus other minerals, vitamins in the B group, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. We can now buy this for ourselves as a supplement, or get this in a juice bar drink at most shopping centers.

If you are constantly ill, tired, lethargic and generally run down, it is time to ask yourself “what fuel am I giving my body?” I usually here “Oh, I eat loads of protein and no carbs” or “I’m

trying to lose this last 2kgs for this fight next week” or “I’m cutting” (?! For what they don’t know).

In my experience many will look to their training (I’m not doing enough), energy drinks full of caffeine, and protein shakes before addressing their over-all diet. Many, not all I hasten to add, amateur athletes who train for Iron Man, fun runs, marathons, triathlons, do not consider the fuel their body requires, and the quality of the fuel they consume.

Which meal do you think is optimal nutrition for your body to fuel it for it’s next work out? A big Mac and fries with a diet drink, or chicken, broccoli and a baked potato with a large salad drizzled with olive oil? They may have the same calorie content, but break it down and the body with be able to utilise the latter much more effectively.

I too was one of the, ‘a calorie is a calorie’ brigade till I wondered why my health was breaking down and I looked at how the body metabolises the nutrients we feed it.

In the glamorous world of the newly qualified (or not so newly qualified as the case may be) personal trainer, there can be an emphasis on training techniques and bits of needless equipment to make the trainer look good.

Many trainers will not even consider educating their clients on nutrition but, as nutrition will influence 80 – 90% of the clients expected training/weight loss outcome, it is, and always will be, an essential part of training.

Lets look at one sport in particular; in the fighting world extreme diets are common. According to Ben Coomber of Body Type Nutrition;

“They are usually very low carb, very low fat and very low calories. They will use weight loss methods like sauna suits and restrict water intake, and generally avoid other key nutrients the body needs. Yes, fight sports are weight dependent, and fighters need to get to their fighting weight, but a protocol that is too extreme over too long a period of time, means the fighter has not been taking care of himself”

An extreme diet that is practiced all year round rather than for specific goals and events only exist for one reason, a lack of education and understanding. I’ve also witnessed daily diets that can be described as extreme year round, even at the elite level.

Fight sports are stuck in the dark ages, with some theories and protocols still being churned out rather than updated. Too many fighters eat low carb but are training twice a day 5 to 7 days a week. Fighter training and sport is extremely demanding.

Your body needs carbohydrates for

maximum muscular output.

Most people think if they need to

lose fat they just need to train a bit harder

and not eat as much as before, usually less

carbs and fat, but this is initially where the

problems arise, do one or the other, not both.

If for example you are eating 2500 calories a

day, you could train a bit harder and you are

likely to burn 3-400 extra calories per day

with around one hour of training, if you eat a

bit less, again you are likely to have a loss of

around 3-400 per day (excluding an average

size small meal), either or being perfect for

weight loss.

But combine those two, so 3-400 calories

lost through both cutting intake and upping

output we now have a calorie deficit of 800

calories, that’s 1700 calories per day for

someone training hard, often twice a day,

often at a body weight of 70kg plus. This

is way too low, short term you will be fine,

you will cope, but give it 2-3 weeks and your

performance will start to drop, sleep will

start to suffer, libido will disappear, explosive

potential will decrease, all because our

common sense said do more and eat less.

Carbohydrate converts to glucose which feed

your muscles.

Fat is essential. If you don’t have adequate fat in your diet you cannot manufacture testosterone effectively. Testosterone is created from saturated

fat and cholesterol. And what foods contain both, red meat. The one thing most fighters snub in favour of chicken, white fish and other lean meats. Yet it is a food source that is going to have a brilliant effect on our male hormones; protein, testosterone producing fats, zinc, iron, CLA, perfect.

Percy (Logan Lerman) is back! Along with his sidekicks Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) but that

doesn’t mean we don’t see some new faces. Meet Tyson (Douglas Smith; Big Love (2006)), Percy’s brother. Don’t worry though; he’s not going to steal any of the glory. Tyson is a Cyclops. That’s right. He’s the one eyed monster.

So with new friends there’s a new adventure awaiting Percy and the gang. The brilliance of this film doesn’t just come from the humour but the ingenuity of the Greek gods in every day America. Who knew the bloke working behind the coffee counter had three pairs of arms you couldn’t see? And who knew that the bloke who owned the Ups delivery service was a God himself? Don’t worry, I won’t give away too many spoilers – at least I’ll try not to.

So this sequel was a roller coaster ride of adventure that tested true friendship in the face of adversity. We see a lot of the old familiar faces whether good or bad and we meet a number of new faces as well, which creates the perfect setting for a new mishap to happen to Percy. Mixed in with some good old Greek Mythology, this subtly educational film is a must see. If you liked he first one, then you’ll like this one!

It’s been a while since I read the book so I had to have a friend refresh my memory in terms of the story.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this film. The characters were very strange, that much is true. And the storyline was pretty good. With Baz Luhrman’s reputation exceeding him, nothing less than amazing was going to be acceptable but maybe this film needs one or two watchings before it can be appreciated.

The style of film was definitely impressive. The music sound track followed by the choreography was impressive. Maybe my negativity comes from my dislike of the book in the first place – can’t be a fan of everything, can we? But I wouldn’t want to dampen your view.

Leonardo DiCaprio gives a faultless and stunning performance (as always) as Jay Gatsby. With Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire as his support cast, the acting is something else.

This film is an exciting retell of the classic Fitzergerald story of true love that never gets its’ chance. Lurhrman goes that step further to make it an exciting journey for the characters and carries the audience along with them. If you like your classics then definitely give this one a watch, or even if you like something a bit different.

Guillermo Del Toro’s new movie ‘Pacific Rim’ is a clear-cut cross between ‘Transformers’ and

‘Godzilla’ featuring the latest in vibrant visual technology and geek pandering.

After Earth is attacked by massive monsters (the ‘Kaijus’) via an inter-dimensional portal under the sea, mankind’s last hope lies in the hands of giant battle robots piloted by

memories (the ‘Jaegers’).

Like the Americanized version of the shamelessly poetic Japanese creation that it is, Pacific Rim is a constantly riveting experience enjoyable to all ages due to its big budget monsters vs. robots silliness. The colors and graphics are so garish and outlandish that it’s like watching a violent metal rainbow stuck in a whirlwind fighting a giant shark made of neon lights through a kalydoscope.

Aside from the main character, Raleigh

Becket (played by a forgettable actor I can’t be bothered to look up)(Ed: that’s Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy/Green Street/Bykers Grove fame), the cast is a parade of recognizable faces, including Will Ferrell’s evil clone ‘Ron Perlman’ (Ed: also stars with Charlie in Sons of Anarchy) as ‘Hannibal Chau’ and real-life manga character ‘Charlie Day’ as Dr Newton Geiszler, a crazed researcher who attempts to meld his concious with that of the aliens in order to gain insight into their intentions. Together they delve into the biological science behind their foe to try and discover a weakness

whilst a selection of unique ‘Jaegers’ attempt to punch the problem away.

And that’s pretty much the whole movie. Loads of flashing colors and cool robots and giant aliens and expensive, detailed battles. If you’re a big nerdy, geeky dweeb like me, this is the movie to watch next time you’re in need of something rediculous and thrilling. Epic!

I’ve got a wee bit of a problem doing this After Earth review hence i have held off until now. Director M Night Shyamalan

has been taking pelters for this movie and strangely 2 of his previous efforts as well in The Happening and The Last Airbender - two films which I quite enjoyed. It’s a problem because I kinda liked this one as well so I’m probably going to be bucking the trend in knocking Mr Shyamalan, sure it’s not a great movie, in the flavour of Sixth Sense or even Signs... but it’s far from a truly bad movie.

Actually I’m going to stick my neck right out and say that this films biggest problems stem from its casting... whereas the Smith boys worked well in ‘The pursuit of happiness’ this time around it just doesn’t work for me and there is no connection to either of the characters they play, unlike say Willis and Osment in Sixth Sense. For one brief moment Smith actually seemed to be trying to become Denzel Washington (who I think would have been better for the part)

The two main leads apart the movie also tries hard to be something it is not, much like Oblivion tried to be, instead of going all out adventure/horror in a kinda Predator fashion. The sentimental moments seem to jar with me throughout and it seems to interrupt the action too much for my liking but apart from that if you forget those annoying elements and don’t look for anything else too deep

then it’s a pretty enjoyable ride.

Having been based on a story/idea penned by Smith himself, After Earth lack any of the directors real trademark twists or horror’esque vibes that most of his other movies have in bundles. I suppose, to be honest, it really doesn’t play out like a Shyamalan film at all.

The story of After Earth is that it is set years in the future and centres on the fractured relationship between a father and son. Father Cypher Raige (Will Smith) is a legendary career general who is renowned for his fearlessness in battle. Son Kitai (Haven Smith) is the coming of age son who strives to follow in his father’s glorious footsteps but struggles with his attitude and loner ways so much that he has so far failed this goal. Worried about the effect that her husband’s career has had on her son and his long periods away from home, wife Faia (Sophie Okonedo) has a go at sorting things out and convinces Cypher to take Kitai on his next mission, no doubt posted to a remote galaxy, far far away.

As they board the spaceship they discover that they are also transporting an alien being, as you would expect by now, their spaceship gets into a wee bit of bother and crash lands on a planet known as Earth, yep Earth, but this Earth is a planet they left behind almost 1000 years earlier and which has now evolved to an extent where it is filled with danger and creatures that just wanna kill you.

After the crash Smith snr is stuck on board the ship with broken legs while Smith jnr is tasked with retrieving a distress beacon from another part of the ship which crashed 100km away from them. It’s at this point that After Earth dips its toes into something akin to a computer game....

• Smith snr communicates with his son using a comm link giving him hints and tips on how to do things.• Smith jnr has to take stuff to give him energy.• Smith jnr needs to get to high ground before nightfall.• Smith jnr needs to get to his goal before he runs out of energy.• Smith jnr has to explore, fight and fly to get to where he needs to go.

This in itself isn’t a bad thing as you could do the same with a number of movies and like I said the story isn’t really the problem for me in this movie its the people. There have been times when Smith has practically carried a movie based solely on his character acting skills and personality but when you ask him to do one of those emotionless type roles like he does here it doesn’t really work and only serves to drag any life and soul out of it. So much so that half way through we dont really care if they manage to get off the planet or fail in their plan and die a horrible drawn out death.

The look and feel of the movie are great with plenty of special effects and a believable world for us to explore with creatures aplenty and an expected ‘boss’ moment at the end which ties up nicely a wee sub plot from the past.

If you take After Earth for what it is then you have an ok movie - not great or even that good but just enjoyable so don’t let the haters put you off.

As time drags on it seems to be getting a little dangerous to have your vacation planned by Mr Eli Roth, well

if his movies are anything to go by anyway. Roth sent you to the woods for a relaxing time in ‘Cabin Fever’ in 2002, booked you a hosteling trip in 2005 at the ‘Hostel’, and somehow convinced you to go back for a second helping in ‘Hostel, Part II’ back in 2007. In ‘Aftershock’ he’s perhaps hoping to get away from it all and your heading for Chili, this time though he’s right in the thick of it with you so maybe things will be OK?

Aftershock was co-written by Roth along with Chilean director Nicolás López and Guillermo Amoedo, this time though he also appears onscreen as one of the main characters.

Roth plays an American tourist simply called Gringo who is one vacation in Chile’s resort port of Valparaiso along with his mates; bearded overweight Pollo (Nicolás Martínez) and ‘luckless in love’ Ariel (Ariel Levy). Pollo is the main man when it comes to having a good time and has connections a plenty due mainly to his pops being super rich and once the family name is flashed with a bit of green back the three amigos can go anywhere and have pretty much anything. Step up to the plate one unimpressed tourist who complains about the Chilean offerings with regards to nightlife which to Pollo is the proverbial ‘red rag to a bull’

A little later our unsuspecting cast are found ‘bopping’ away in yet another strobe-lit, sweaty club, just like all the rest? Well not really, this one just happens to be, wait for it…..

...UNDERGROUND…… da da dahhhhhh…!!!!!

Queue some shaky cameras and falling bricks signalling our earth quake (as could be guessed by the title) and we are off on an amazing rollercoaster disaster movie like no other…. Well, not really.... Pretty much like all the others really.

Borrowing various wee bits from other black comedy movies, disaster movies, apocalypse movies and even a little bit of slasher flicks, our movie kicks off as our trio and their new found female friends find themselves buried alive in the club. It is here that things could have stayed and we could have been treated to some clever ‘highbrow’ symbolist story of survival and the socioeconomic elements in all their glory, however soon after the initial quake our gang find a wee short cut to the surface and all is well. Well, not really….

Despite surviving one big act of god our band of merry men (and women) have bigger things to worry about? Other people…!!!! In the movies things always seem to descend pretty quickly socially when a disaster occurs and rather than everyone pulling together our Chilean men (and women) seem to become all caveman‘ish and things get pretty hairy pretty quickly.

Sure we have some twists and some witty comic gore moments (think Final Destination here) but overall Aftershock is pretty predictable in its format and storytelling. With criminals running amok in the streets rough justice is pretty much the order of the day with the rich, the privileged and women (sorry ladies) right at the front of the queue to be punished. Defo for the fans of the comic, gore, slasher genres.

Paying attention is critical when watching movies and particular when it’s a movie that’s trying its best to scare the bejesus out of you. I had one

of those not paying attention moments when watching possession horror The Conjuring, it took me a good 15 mins to realise just who mop top dad Roger Perron actually was, just goes to show you… you can never forgive a 70’s makeover.

The action opens with Patrick Wilson (Prometheus/Insidious), who plays side-burned paranormal/psychic investigator Ed Warren, pressing record on his tape recorder (look it up kids) and utters the first lines in a calm controlled tone “It’s November 1 1971, I’m sitting here with Carolyn Perron who, with her family, has been experiencing supernatural occurrences ...”

I wasn’t really expecting much from this movie to be honest, certainly not to be scared stupid by a hair-raising supernatural horror, but you know what… that’s exactly what happened. James Wan (Saw) takes the route of not bombarding us with blood and gore this time around instead opting for a tight well told possession story, made in the good old fashioned ‘what’s in the cupboard, don’t look in the mirror, never look under the bed, stay out of the basement’ way.

In Harrisville, Rhode Island there is a dilapidated quiet farmhouse where Carolyn and Roger Perron (Ron Livingston - Band of Brothers/ The Odd Life of Timothy Green) have decided to relocate their four young daughters to. It was bought cheap at auction and to be honest the setting seems a little too good to be true… the perfect rural retreat away from the busy city?

The signs that all is not good kinda start right immediately when, just like a real life Scooby Doo the family dog refuses to even enter their idyllic new home. They tie Sadie up outside and settle down for the night, the kids decide to play a wee game called hide-and-clap, it’s a technical game that I won’t go into here ;-) but while playing the girls come across a boarded up entrance to their spider web infested cellar. Whatever you do don’t open it.

“Wonder why it was boarded up?” asks 70’s mom Carolyn (Lili Taylor - Public Enemies/The Promotion)

YEH… just why would anyone board up a perfectly good cellar? Come on guys?

Having opened the cellar things soon start to go bump in the night and all the classic symptoms begin; doors open, then close by themselves, clocks stop at the same time, there’s clapping when nobody is there, smells, imaginary friend appear, sleepwalking kids, cursed toys, unexplained bruises, strange laughing and pictures falling off walls…

HEY…. Those are signs man….!!!! Someone’s pulling your leg… literally… and it isn’t for fun…!!!!

Yep that’s right, the horrified Perons are smack bang in the middle paranormal central. When things become too much mom seeks the help of paranormal investigating team, Ed and Lorraine Warren to help get rid of their unwanted spooky friends.

On entering the house Lorraine (Vera Farmiga - Safe House/Source Code/Up in the Air) announces, “Something awful happened here, Ed” after sensing a particularly nasty spirit having ‘latched on to’ the family. No sh*t Sherlock….

Now we know what’s going on things start to happen at a fast an furious rate and the scares just keep coming.

There’s nothing really overly different about The Conjuring and we’ve actually seen 99% of it all before in pretty much identical movies before. It’s not really a remake, a follow-up or even a reboot… let’s just call it a tribute move, a tribute to a genre that loads of people still love to watch. Love to be shocked by what’s behind the door or lurking in the dark. The movie ‘borrows’ something from all those others before it but you never really question its motives as it’s done in a really nice fashion.

It’s a creepy story, set in a creepy location with creepy people and creepy props. None creepier than that bloody doll Annabel, a possessed item that the Warrens keep in their bizarre cursed collectables room at their home so the demons can’t get out. The house where they live?… and sleep?… yeh right, sure I would.

The Conjuring is actually based on the case files of real life man and wife paranormal investigation team Edward “Ed” Warren Miney and Lorraine Rita Warren who were American paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent cases of haunting. Edward was a World War II US Navy veteran and former police officer who became a noted demonologist, author, and lecturer. His wife Lorraine was a professed clairvoyant and a light trance medium who worked closely with her husband.

An accomplished scary movie that would benefit more from a later in the year release date, a few months would have stuck it in Halloween time guys? As it stands The Conjuring is a nice dark treat for a summer midnight cinema trip, defo wouldn’t plan to be walking home though….

Homeland Season 3 is almost upon us and with the release of the first proper trailer we take a

look at what we can expect and what others have said will be happening when the show hits our screens.

Sadly March this year brought sad news that the show’s producer/writer Henry Bromell had passed away from a heart attack, at the age of 65. Bromell had written for Homeland since it was first launched back in 2011, and also worked as an executive producer on the show.

The Finale of season 2 left pretty much everything and everyone up in the air (no pun intended) so who do you think will survive the aftermath of the explosion and what comes next?

A definite fatality of the finale was 2 season veteran David Harewood, CIA anti-terror chief David Estes, who was killed in the blast but as for the rest…?

Having last been seen heading off into the Canadian wilderness Damian Lewis (Brody) revealed back in March that he thought Brody's strained relationship with Carrie (Claire Danes) would be probably be "over". In his opinion the unlikely romance between the pair was not "a story that has got legs",

and that "They'd be in the divorce courts very quickly."

Exec producer Alex Gansa has also hinted that we may see a lot less of Brody as he is set to be branded "the world's most wanted terrorist" following the events of the season two finale. At the start the new season would feature "perhaps not as much" of Brody as previous seasons have. "He is the most wanted man on the planet," Gansa said, and "By definition, he's going to be hiding somewhere. And if he's hiding, that limits what he can do."

When asked about Brody's continued survival in the show, the writer explained that there was "no regrets", stating that "not killing him off was the right move". "There was still more story to tell between Carrie and Brody," he said. "I have no regrets about that.""We'll always sacrifice a degree of believability in order to put two characters together in a dramatic way."

Story wise Season 3 will cover the search for Brody in a "global manhunt for the world's most wanted terrorist", show insiders leaked. sponsored by a state?" he said. "These are the big concerns that we're going to deal with in the first sweep of episodes.

"Then there's the big question about where Brody is. Does anybody know that Carrie helped him get out of the country and will they ever see each other again? And there are a couple more surprises."

Lewis, Danes and Patinkin, cast members Morena Baccarin (Jess Brody) who will actually be pregnant in real life during season 3, Rupert Friend (Quinn), Jackson Pace (Chris Brody) and Morgan Saylor (Dana Brody) are all set to return in their respective roles while Carrie’s surveillance expert Virgil, played by David Marciano, will only return to the show in small chunks and won’t feature as a prominent character when it returns. Marciano has been working hard on developing a prison drama for cable tv with his writing partner Steven Pickman and producer Aaron Kaplan.

Diego Klattenhoff, who plays Brody's long-time Marine friend and eventual love rival Mike Faber, is also likely to be taking a smaller role on the new season.

Those with bigger parts in the upcoming season include Sarita Choudhury, Saul's wife Mira, who briefly returned in the finale having left him earlier in the season two run.

F Murray Abraham’s role as retired black-ops mastermind Dar Adal is also set to be

increased as now acting CIA director Saul tries to get to grips with just what happened in the bombing at CIA headquarters.

Tracy Letts (Prison Break, The District) has been cast as Senator Andrew Lockhart, which was originally thought to be just a recurring role but has been confirmed as a show regular now. His character will be the head of a team brought together to investigating the terror attack which occurred in the last episode.

Also new for season three will be William Abadie, the Gossip Girl actor will be seen in multiple episodes playing a mysterious and charismatic journalist called Alan Bernard. Boardwalk Empire's David Aaron Baker will take on the role of a psychiatrist named Dr Harlan. Up in the Air actress Amy Morton will

play Erin Kimball an attorney appointed by the CIA to defend Carrie Mathison. Meanwhile Boss actor Martin Donovan has been recruited up for a recurring role as Bennett who works as a partner in a Washington DC law firm.

Iron Man actor Shaun Toub will also be coming on board in a recurring role as high level Middle Eastern intelligence officer Majid Javadi.

Parks and Recreation kicks off its 6th season next month on NBC in the states while BBC Four will show the 3rd season sometime in

2014 (what’s that all about?)

For me Parks and Recreation was a slow starter and I’m not really 100% convinced that it is as good as The Office, which the main writers left behind to focus on P&R as they inferred that it had more scope for the future. Being a huge Office fan I struggled with the comparisons to the characters in the show and found too many glaring familiarities with the main cast.

When it was first launched Parks and Recreation received generally mixed reviews during its first season. However, after a re-approach to its format and tone, its second and subsequent seasons received much higher critical acclaim. Parks and Recreation has received several awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series and four Emmy nominations for Poehler's performance. In Time's 2012 year-end lists issue, Parks and Recreation was named the number one television series. In 2013, after receiving four consecutive nominations in the category, Parks and Recreation won the Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy.

For those in the UK who simply can’t wait for their fix of the wacky going on in the Pawnee parks department and have managed to keep up with things using ‘alternative methods’ (Netflix etc.), what can we look forward to in the coming season?

Well, first off NBC have announced that the show will kick off with an hour-long special set in London with a storyline involving Leslie Knope coming to the capital to pick up an 'International Woman in Leadership' award. She will be given the award along with a Danish mayor played by Hidi Klum, who is beloved by her citizens. "Her town completely worships her in a way that makes Leslie a little jealous, considering that Leslie is undergoing a recall vote in Pawnee." explained executive producer Mike Schur.

Probably the biggest news for season six is set to be the departure mid-season of show regulars Rob Lowe (Chris Traeger) and Rashida Jones (Ann Perkins). Mike Schur has said that he will be "sad" to lose them both

"We've been working on their storyline (on and off) for four seasons now, and heading into this year... it felt like a natural time to move them into the next phase."

The long serving stars will be given "a great Pawnee send-off" before they make their exit Parks and Rec for good.

"We absolutely love both Rashida and Rob, and will be sad to see them go," he said. "Rashida was one of the very first people we knew we wanted in the cast, and as important as Ann is to Leslie (and vice-versa), she'll certainly never be far from Pawnee.

"Rob we initially thought we could only have for six or eight episodes, and we couldn't be happier that he will have stuck around for 75."

"I think it's a really good cast of characters that they've created with the actors and writers," he explained. "It's a really unique set of characters and it's a very unique show. I really enjoy being a part of it."

Back in July Chris Pratt (Andy Dwyer) posted a photo on his Instagram showing the brand new buff body he has been working hard on for his role in Guardians of the Galaxy. We wait with baited breath as to how this is explained in season 6 as podgy Andy wasn’t the most active person around Pawnee.

Executive producer Mike Schur (Mose, Dwight’s brother from The Office) said “There is a joke that I wrote in the premiere that I think we’ll probably shoot that is a little tiny acknowledgement or nod to the fact that he looks very different to the way he normally looks,”

“I don’t think beyond a little joke about it that we’ll end up doing anything significant. We’re not going to suddenly say that Andy became a fitness nut because that doesn’t ring true.”

On the subject of new members of the cast Schur revealed that Billy Eichner was set to appear as an Eagleton counterpart to our self-obsessed Donna Meagle character, played by Retta. “He’s one of the funniest human beings I have ever seen in my entire life,” Schur explained, “and he’s Donna’s Eagleton doppelganger.”

In a running theme the Eagleton-Pawnee plot will play out across several episodes and sees the rival towns unbelievably embarking on “a joint venture”. This will pave the way for an influx of Eagleton equivalents to the Pawnee cast. ” If you were in the Eagleton Parks Department, what would it look like? We wanted to show that world.” claimed Schur.

Sam Elliott has been cast in the role of Eagleton's version of Ron Swanson appearing in one of the early episode of the season, actually the same episode where Kristen Bell will be seen as a neighbouring councilwoman who appears to be a better dressed version of our own Leslie Knope.

Schur however is still searching for an April double, while Tom’s copy is so far being kept under lock and key. “Tom’s doppelganger is a spoiler,” he insists. “It’s not who the actor is – it’s the concept behind it.”

Henry Winkler (Arrested Development) will also be making an appearance as the father of Jean-Ralphio (Ben Schwartz) along with Kristen Bell guesting in a role as Leslie's latest rival.

STOP PRESS…. Pawnee mayor Walter Gunderson will amazingly be played by… wait for it… Bill Murray…!!!!! Well that or the character won’t appear at all. “We’re still holding out for Bill,” said exec producer Mike Schur. “And if we never meet the Mayor, I won’t be sad. We never met Vera on Cheers. We never met Tim Allen’s neighbour on Home Improvement.”

Parks and Recreation Season 6 will premiere stateside on NBC on September 26 and in the UK sometime in 2020 on BBC channel 45 by the looks of it. You know what to do….

On the 19th of August 2013 at 10:00pm the dome will come firmly down on the town of

Chester’s Mill and kick off the UK showings of Stephen King’s miniseries ‘Under the Dome’, although it’s a wee bit behind our US friends as they revel in the shows episode 8 goings on.

For those who have experienced a King serial before it has all the hallmarks and initial confusion that have satisfied newbies and fans alike for a while now.

In written form this is one of, if not the, longest of King’s books but the initial premise is simple really. The small rural town of Chester’s Mill is filled with the usual collection of strange and contrasting characters. After only a brief meeting with a few of them the town is faced with an amazing event which leaves you puzzling over just what is going on?

Now most King readers will already be aware that he has a tendency to go for the massively big and sometimes complicated build up and then the eventual ‘pay off’ tends to disappoint a lot of people (me

included) but sometimes he gets it spot on so having not read the dome book I have my fingers crossed for a good ride with plenty of twists and turns and a good big splash at the end rather than a ride on a ghost train where you can see the strings and in the end it turns into the dodgems. It’s a ghost story… it’s a ghost story… oh… no… it’s a giant monster? You know what I’m talking about yeh?

Certainly the opening few episodes of King’s latest Twilight Zone’esque offering does seem to have a lot of potential to get under one’s dome, sorry skin.

Initially we meet Dale 'Barbie' Barbara (Mike Vogel – TV Bates Motel and Pan Am), who happens to be busily dumping a corpse into a hole and quickly filling it back in again.

We visit the local law enforcement officers Sheriff Linda Esquivel (Natalie Martinez - Broken City/End of Watch) and Sheriff Howard 'Duke' Perkins (Jeff Fahey - Lost/The Lawnmower Man)

Pop over to the local café and checkout what owner Rose Twitchell (Beth Broderick – Lost/ Sabrina, the Teenage Witch) and local councilman / car dealer James "Big Jim" Rennie (Dean Norris – CSI/Breaking Bad) are up to.

Take a sly peek at Big Jim’s young son Junior

Rennie (Alexander Koch) and his girlfriend Angie McAlister (Britt Robertson - TV/Scream 4) as they get up to no good, or a young adults version of no good. They inevitable have fun, have a fight and fall out.

Next on the road we catch up with local reported Julia Shumway (Rachelle Lefevre - White House Down/ The Twilight Saga) as she meets up with a local resident to talk about ‘odd propane deliveries’.

A few more scene setting moments later, and before we really get to meet anyone else, all hell breaks loose and the town is covered by what seems to be an energy dome. Cutting off everyone inside it including; an unfortunate cow, an unlucky small-plane and some pretty surprised motorists along the way.

Who, or more likely, what is responsible? Nobody really knows.

As you would expect fingers start to wag in the direction of extra-terrestrials and the government, which Barbie fobs off because “It works.”

The series is produced by Neal Baer and Brian K. Vaughan from the King book “Dome” and they have pulled together quite a heavy hitting cast. Even with a pretty sweet bunch like these we can only wait to see how they

juggle all the various elements, advance the mystery and of course ultimately reveal the mystery behind why this sleep backwater town ended up isolated from the outside world in a way that doesn’t leave viewers, like some readers, unsatisfied.

One question that does have me wondering a little is that, like another recently tried series focusing squarely on an ‘event’ (that being Flashforward), is that we really need closure at the end of this… and it needs to be sooner rather than later or it potentially suffers the same fate and we never find out what happened, unless you read the book of course. CBS hasn’t ruled out future seasons, but for me the

show would probably be more interesting if it had a predefined ending laid out for us to look forward to and then everyone moves on to something new.

Under the Dome starts on the 19th of August 2013 at 10:00pm on Channel 5.

Robot and Frank is a rather beautiful film starring Skeletor as an old man (but with skin this time) who has de-mentia. His son (James Marsden) gets

him a robot to help look after him.

He then trains the robot to help him rob people… Huzzah.

Okay I may mock Frank Langella but I loved Masters of the Universe as a kid and even when he was playing Richard Nixon I spent the whole time thinking how cool it was that Skeletor was playing Nixon.

Anyway, this is possibly one of the most believable scifi films made in a long time. Robots are now domestic aids for people with illness and dementia. Helping them live their lives and ensuring they stay safe in a very recognisable future. The technology in the film seems only a few years away. Franks favourite place to go is the local library and speak with librarian Susan Sarandon, not that it’ll be there much longer as rich people are turning it into a cool place for rich people to hang out and be around old things. Bloody rich people.

This is a very beautiful film with powerful performances from all members of the cast, which also includes Liv Tyler as Franks’ daughter who objects to the robot on principle.

It’s also good to see dementia treated in such a nice way on film. It’s funny, heart-warming, and unlike most of the films I review here, really pleasant and nice. I’m not sure I know how to handle watching a film that doesn’t leave you feeling like you need a shower by the end of it. But it’s so good I may have to watch it again. It’s definitely worth looking out for.

This film is amazing. I first watched this when I was about eleven and now eight years later it is still a classic on my shelf that I could not part with

even if you paid me. The beauty of this film is the fulfilment of little girl’s dreams.

Okay it sounds weird when I put it like that but let me explain:Sam Montgomery (Hilary Duff; Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)) is stuck living with Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge; American Pie (1999)), her horrible stepmother. Your stereotypical Cinderella.

Prince Charming is played by Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill (2003)) and he’s been talking to Sam for months without realising it. They met in a Princeton chatroom and have become, I guess friends isn’t quite the right word, but they have a thing for each other so they agree to meet. Cinderella must go to the ball against all her evil stepmother does to stop her and so she does.

Upon discovering who her Prince Charming really is, Sam can’t face him. Her unpopularity at school would make her a laughing stock. I won’t spoil what happens but this film won’t disappoint whatever expectations you may have.

In some parts it’s cheesy and in some it’s original but throughout it’s loveable. If you haven’t heard of it then shame on you and if you haven’t seen it, go and watch it now.

After falling in love with Hilary Duff’s A Cinderella Story in 2004, I was dubious as to whether this would be any good but both films came in a box set for a

good price and I liked Selena Gomez (up until this point, she had only really been acting in the Dis-ney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place – which is hilarious btw!) I do love a dance-off style chick flick and I was honestly impressed with the tal-ents of Selena Gomez in this film, she can dance!

So Selena plays Mary Santiago who’s stuck living with Dominique Blatt (Jane Lynch; Role Models(2008)) a used-to-be-pop star who thinks she still has her groove. When Mary’s mother died, Dominique took Mary in to do the housework and all the chores her two horrible daughters can find for her.

Mary’s your average girl. She has talent but she doesn’t flaunt it and then the opportunity of a lifetime comes along when Joey Parker (Drew Seeley; High School Musical (singing voice, unaccredited)(2008)) – the hottest pop star at the moment – offers one lucky winner to dance in his new music video alongside him.

You can probably guess what happens next. Instead of dropping her glass slipper (or even her mobile phone), Mary drops her Zune and low and behold the story of Cinderella unfolds.

I love this film purely for its girly fantasy with some great music and brilliant scenes that well put together. So teens looking for a chick flick, give this one a whirl. If you love A Cinderella Story and Step Up, then you’re sure to love this.

This 1994 Disney classic fails to age with each passing generation. Fea-turing the voice talents of James Earl Jones (Mufassa), Rowan Atkinson

(Zazu), Jeremy Irons (Scar) and Whoopi Gold-berg (Shenzi). It’s sure to be a favourite with the family.

We follow Simba (Matthew Broderick; Godzilla(1998)) as he is grows and learns the way of the pride. But when disaster strikes, he finds himself outcast into unknown lands where he encounters the loveable characters of Timon (Nathan Lane; Mousehunt (1997)) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella; Mousehunt (1997)). This is when we witness one of the most famous scenes in Disney history. Hakuna Matata. If you don’t know what that means then you seriously need to go and watch this film.

Filled with songs, humour, adventure, and family fun with a few moral principles to learn along the way – this is Disney at its best. And it’s proved that over time. Not only is it still a fast seller on the shelves but it was turned into a Broadway musical in 1997 and is a must see musical in the West End even today.

This film is by far my favourite Disney film simply from the ingenious way it’s been put together and formulated for kids and adult entertainment alike.

Looking for a Sunday afternoon film then this is the one or even something for the little one’s birthday. An ideal gift.

The ABC’s of Death is a rather bizarre series of short films put together in one film. Directors across the globe were given $5000 and a letter. They

then had to come up with a short film featur-ing some form of death to do with that letter. Are you following me so far? Good.

So what you end up having is 26 completely random short films from around the world. Some of them work really well and some of them are just awful. Strangely the Japanese ones are awful, they all try to be funny and the humour doesn’t translate well. The American ones are all horrendously cheap looking. Actually it does a really good job of showing you how far money goes in different countries too. V from Canada’s Kaare Andrews has the production values of a giant blockbuster while W from American John Snepp looks like a student film. A bad student film at that.

Some of the short films are definitely worth a watch. Ben Wheatleys U was phenomenal and D was so good it took me a few minutes to recover. But when you pair that with the awful M from Ti West or F. It’s just hard to decide whether or not the good ones make up for the bad ones. To be honest, I’m still not sure. Most of them just turn out to be exceedingly average. But you get that with any collection of short films.

The ones I enjoy you could despise and vice versa. It’s worth a watch, especially when you can just watch a couple of films when you have a spare ten minutes and watch the rest later.

It’s definitely not a failed experiment anyway. Overall I enjoyed the experience. I will go back to a couple of the films and watch them again. But I wouldn’t sit through the whole thing.

I’m a huge fan of the original Texas Chain-saw Massacre. I remember buying a copy from a shop in Virginia galleries back when it was banned. You’d walk into the shop and

a guy would hand you a list. Then he’d make a call and someone would turn up with a pirat-ed VHS copy of the film, copied from the old beta max or laserdisc. It was like some weird drug deal but you were fixing for a horror film.

That was back when it was the only way to get a hold of this kind of film. It’s crazy to think that now you can find it on DVD in a supermarket. When it was finally rereleased in the cinema I ran to see it at a midnight showing and it blew me away. Words cannot describe how intense the original film is on the big screen. So now they’ve decided to make a new sequel… And well.

This film is like someone digging up a dead loved one and smashing them to pieces with a hammer whilst shouting “LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO” repeatedly. It has no redeemable qualities and does a paranormal activity. By that I mean it completely rewrites what happened at the end of the last film. I mean it shows you what happens at the end of the original film, then completely disregards it and suddenly has a big group of people in the rednecks house to get shot up. Oh yeah and a baby.

The film follows the baby, now grown up. She has been left a house by a dead relative she never knew she had. She goes with a group of her friends to the house, Leatherface is there.

People die in really uninteresting ways. Unlike the original it does nothing for the horror genre. It just meanders along and is a huge disappointment. Especially considering they already have good sequels made of the original AND they’ve already remade this and made a prequel to the remake. It makes no sense that this film should happen. It boggles the mind. It’s a big pair of pants. Stay well clear.

For some people Elijah Wood will always be Frodo Baggins, or the an-noying kid from Deep Impact, but to many (like myself) he’s the guy that

seems to go out of his way to do some really bizarre films. This is one of them. Maniac is a semi remake of the outstand-ing video nasty from 1980.

The main difference between the two is that this film is shot from the point of view of the main protagonist, the maniac in question Frank Zito. So you hardly see Elijah Wood in the film, you are accompanied by his voice over and the occasional glance into a mirror to see his face. Gone is the innocent look that served him so well as a child star, it has been replaced with the eyes of a mad man in what has to be one his best performances so far. Especially considering how seldom you see him.

The film is dark, dirty and filled with grime as he scalps women in front of your eyes then places those scalps onto the head of a mannequin. Yeah, Kim Cattrall isn’t jumping around to Starship in this film, but that’s not to say that he doesn’t see mannequins come alive before his eyes. It’s just not in a cheery 80’s comedy film kind of way.

There’s not a lot about this film that is cheery. It focuses on the constant struggle Frank has as he goes through a life he doesn’t understand and finds himself in social situations he can’t deal with. But it is a masterpiece of horror. When the film ends you don’t have a warm feeling inside. If anything you feel kind of dirty. Which with this film, can only be a good thing.

With movies on-screen chemistry is just something that either happens naturally or falls flat on its face. Film makers strive for it

and even pray for, it truly is 99% luck.

Magic shone on the day director David Ayer put together new film, End of Watch, and the connection between Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña is pretty outstanding. With that closeness comes not just a good movie but a great one.

Playing a couple of young LA cops who inadvertently stumble into the world of a major Mexican drug cartel operating right under their own noses. The running theme in End of Watch is its consistently violent storyline and to its credit the action is always justified by the situation and story.

Both actors reportedly spent almost half a year just driving around with and watching the LAPD in action so they could get their characters spot on. For me the results speak for themselves.

Definitely a movie to catch on DVD if you didn’t manage to see it in the cinema.

The Massive hack ‘n’ slash game ‘Dynasty Warriors’ has been with us for an age now,

with all the past games the plot and storyline has stayed pretty constant and revolving around the story of ‘Romance Of The Three Kingdoms’, with each game just merely jazzing things up a wee bit and changing some costumes and scenarios. So with a number of titles in the series does new release ‘Dynasty Warriors 8’ still live up to the challenge?

For those of you that have played a Dynasty Warrior game before you know what the story is all about but for those of you that don’t it’s pretty simple, it’s based on the historical novel Romance Of The Kingdoms with a bit of Final Fantasy elements mixed in just to spice things up a bit. V8 lets you choose between the three kingdoms and through 44 newly designed stages; Wei, Wu and Shu plus the recently added Jin dynasty that was made playable in Dynasty Warriors 7 and another faction

consisting of special characters. New ‘What If’ scenarios can be achieved within the campaigns by completing certain objectives within scenarios and allowing you to take a hypothetical route instead of the historical route to see how things might have played out differently.

The basic combat is still there, you can still perform long and powerful combos to rack up your K.O. Count and Chain Count, plus increase your Musou Gauge to unleash a powerful attack with unique finishing move for each character. Your Rage Meter will also fill up and once activated your attacks will have more oomph as well as allowing you to perform a Rage Musou attack. The combat has had some new elements added to it, the new Man, Earth, Heaven weapon class system plays as a one-upmanship mechanic where each class is superior and inferior to the others making either bad guys easier or harder to kill. It also ads a strategic thought to the game by making sure you have at least two of the three classes in your inventory before a battle.

Before you begin battles you can equip four skills to your character such as increase attack damage or defence against enemy officers etc., choose a horse to ride or tigers or even panda’s as companions for some extra aid. You can also equip any secondary weapon you want that you

have unlocked in battle or in your Story or Ambition Mode through buying from a blacksmith before a battle.

The new counter system can give you the upper edge during combat with a high ranked officer, by successfully countering a strong attack you will leave the officer vulnerable and you can also switch to your secondary weapon.

Storm Rush is a new wide ranged, fast paced attack that you can only use on an enemy whose weapon class is inferior to yours, you’ll know when an enemy’s weapon is inferior to your class when a spirit icon appears above them, an enemy officer whose weapon is superior to yours will have an exclamation mark above them.The new Ambition Mode allows you to pick your any character and start your own empire and create a glistening temple that will bring the emperor to your place. You start of by freely moving about a small piece land that only holds a blacksmith, through completing battles you’ll earn money and material in order to expand your buildings and your empire. There are 4 styles of battles to choose from in Ambition mode Skirmish, Unconventional, Great and Duels each of which is will give more of a specific resource to increase your empire. Skirmish’s is great for collecting materials that can be used to increase

the ranks of your buildings, Unconventional Battles are good for collecting fame, which allow you to gain more allies for your empire, Great Battles are good for collecting allies while Duels are for collecting famous officers AKA playable officers. It also has a neat online feature were you can invite a friend to your camp or vice versa where they can purchase from your stores and then go and do a battle together. Battles in Ambition mode can be played one after the other without going back to your camp, the catch is the difficulty increase slightly with each battle but the rewards also increase too. Special unlocks for Ambition Mode and Free Mode can be obtained by completing a number of battles in succession.

There are a few downers with Dynasty Warriors 8, mainly to do with the AI, it isn’t perfect but its durable to an extent, the main issue with the AI lays within Ambition where your other NPC officers can’t even put up a fight, they’ll flee within seconds by

encountering any enemy resistance along the way, forcing you either to run back and forth to protect your officers or choose to just leave them to their fate.

Overall though Dynasty Warriors 8 is still a fun game to experience, probably just as much as the others before it, with only just a few aesthetic changes and newly added mechanics to combat might be all it takes to keep the game going and still be successful, maybe an ‘if it isn’t broke don’t fix it’ scenario? With 40+ newly designed maps and countless different scenarios to enjoy Dynasty Warriors 8 will keep you satisfied and entertained for hours on end.

With the next season of Telltale’s critically acclaimed Walking Dead

series expected to arrive later this year, Telltale wanna keep us all a wee bit agitated for its release by releasing a DLC for the current 1st series that will both explain and carry stuff over to the 2nd series.

400 Days chronically tells the stories of 5 new and rugged survivors that would fit in nicely with Lee’s old group. You can play each characters story in any order you want, the chapters have no effect on any of the other characters story but will affect the overall conclusion of the DLC and what will be carried over to season 2. With nothing

really changed, if you were a fan of the original series you’ll instantly feel right at home, with the same point a click approach and hasty decision making.

The only issue with 400 Days is even though it’s a DLC it’s not particularly long. Even with playing all the characters chapters its roughly half the duration of a single episode from series 1 in which case their roughly 3 hours long. That being said you don’t really get a chance to get emotionally connected to the character as you could with Lee and Clementine, but the cleverly written chapters will keep you playing on.

What 400 Days still manages to capture is the intensity of difficult decision making, even with each chapters small running time, it still manages to put out countless admiral efforts that will twist your emotions and all the great elements that we all loved from the first series.

Even though there are no decisions making that will carry over from series 1 there are a 1 or 2 hidden and noticeable references that can be seen and found. Therefor there is no need for any knowledge from the events of the first game that will be of use for 400 Days in order for you to enjoy.

The overall experience of 400 Days may be a short one but nothing less than a perfect DLC, you get a bit of everything that made this series so great in the first place and that will leave you enthusiastically waiting for more with season 2 on the way.

When Batman and the Arkham series was launched by Rocksteady, it

absolutely raised the bar for any super hero game coming after it, and it’s kinda what we want to see more of for any other game based on a super hero. This case with Deadpool is that it’s pretty much a step back in time to the super hero games of old such as Spiderman and The Fantastic 4. The Merc with a Mouth sets out on a path of vengeance and a heap of witty banter, taking the player through a very self-aware journey. Deadpool acts as he famously does in the comics, moving from chapter to chapter and bumping into some old friends along the way such as Wolverine and other X-Men members. With Deadpool it’s all about the retro action of past Hack ‘n’ Slash and Beat ‘Em Up games with a seemingly endless supply of goons for you to shoot up or cut down. Shooting in the game isn’t particularly satisfying and can be a bit of a handful so you will probably just rely on your melee skills to takedown most of your enemies. The gameplay isn’t exactly the best but it’s when the combat is just dragged out so much that you tend to spot the faults. Some unfortunate moments will see players throw into inexplicably huge environments filled by aimless, wasteful space, backing to an awkward gameplay tempo that never really strikes the right balance between action and exploration. Even with a wide range of various weapons to choose and upgrade, the combat can still be rather tedious and ridiculously long. Grunts take more hits than they’re actually worth, and you’ll occasionally face large brutes, that soak up even more damage. You’ll take them all out the same exact way by hacking, slashing, and dodging when appropriate. Even the bosses can often be defeated in a laughable simple fashion. You never feel that you’re being rewarded for anything but your persistence. Oddly timed, dodgy moves and counterattacks create unrewarding feedback, while the light patter of sound effects and fragile animations lend little impact to the stuttering scenes of carnage. Spending points to unlock a greater range of weapons, guns, and gadgets adds to the variety but does nothing to increase the games depth; the only noticeable benefits are a few dull combo strings and relatively powerful moves called momentum attacks.

Deadpool’s best moments are his self-referential, and 4th wall breaking antics that will lead comic book fans to LOL and even

some non-comic book fans that have never even heard of Deadpool will chuckle at his gags, Deadpool is defined more by its humour than its successes so players looking for a Marvel style Arkham game will need to look somewhere else.

Trainspotting is a 1996 British black comedy/drama film directed by Danny Boyle based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh, who played hapless drug dealer Mikey Forrester, and starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald.

The Academy Award nominated screenplay, by John Hodge, follows a group of heroin addicts in a late 1980s economically depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life. Beyond drug addiction, other themes in the film are exploration of the urban poverty and squalor in “culturally rich” Edinburgh.

Heroin addicts Mark Renton (McGregor) and Spud (Bremner) - known by his nickname - are running down Princes Street pursued by store security guards. Renton’s circle of friends are introduced: amoral con artist Sick Boy (Miller), simple-minded, good-natured Spud - both also heroin addicts - clean-cut athlete Tommy (McKidd), and sociopath Begbie (Carlyle), who picks extremely violent fights with people who get in his way.
