    CANON LAW HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN

    CANON ATTACK IS BEING FOLLOWED

    MGP Line n Verse

Holy Crosses are a common feature at every East Indian Village in Bombay, Thane, Vasai and Raigad. The Community Cross is a place wherein all residents come together to recite the Rosary especially during the month of May and October. Mobai Gaothan Panchayat(MGP) has declared May 31st as Holy Cross Day.

MGP has decided to have a count on our Holy Crosses as a majority of them are more than a century old and have heritage value. Some of them need urgent preservation especially when many locals have migrated from their villages. The data collected will help us preserve and protect our holy Crosses. We invite all concerned East Indian Community Members to share their local Cross information with us.

MGPs initiatives and Announcements on Holy Crosses

*The details required are Holy Cross Name, Date/Year of installation, Cross built by, Place, Local Parish, renovation date, cross manager and their contact and email address.*We plan to cover Holy Crosses in our monthly bulletin and you can send us the photographs of the Holy Cross with details mentioned above.*With effect from this year MGP will announce an annual award for the Best preserved Holy Cross at the East Indian Awards and honour it as the Holy Cross of the Year. This award will be presented for the Holy Cross wherein the original structure is maintained.*You may send your details to [email protected]

MGP AppealWe request all in our community not to renovate their Holy Crosses but maintain

the same as it has heritage value.

Holy Cross CensusAN APPEAL TO THE ARCHDIOCESE

    HIERARCHY

MARIAN HOLIDAY From August last week till September 11 many from our East Indian Community go to Vailankanni for a Pilgrimage. A handful of School principals allow the children to go to Vailankanni and the others warn of strict action or even keep examinations with an intention that no school children take a holiday during this time. The East Indian Community do not have any native place and so Vailankanni is an ideal place wherein they can take a holiday and have a prayerful pilgrimage. While we have holidays around the festival of other communities its saddening that we do not encourage our community to go on a pilgrimage. There are many private schools run by other communities who have a mid-semester holiday during this time. We appeal to the hierarchy to allow the children to take a holiday during the Novenas and feast. We will appreciate if a Marian Holiday is considered to encourage our community to indulge in prayer during these days. As the Archdiocese gears up for consultation it will be appreciated if the East Indian Community heads and association leaders are invited to suggest ways to benefit the community that has donated most of the lands for religious purposes.

MGP then spoke on the OBC and the inconvenience caused to the East Indians who need to come to the Archbishops house for the letter. MGP suggested that a one time letter be sent to all Parish Priests that the word - East Indian can be entered basis letter from local East Indian associations.

MGP spoke about the Church premises to be given to all east indian associations for their meetings and events without any hire charges.MGP specified on the need for church announcements for the East Indian community, monthly meet with aboriginal community like done in Goa and land to be alloted for the East Indian Bhavan.

    MGP's 10-Point Agenda for the East Indian Community-Released on 1st January 2013

1.Closure of Uttan Dumping groundAs assured by the Cardinal the dumping ground was to be closed within 1 year and we have completed more than 3 years. Need update on communications. We demand that the dumping ground is closed by 12th March, the day it was re-opened and the agitation called off as per your request. Deadline December 31st 2013

2.Housing schemes for East Indians on vacant church propertiesIn the past church properties were developed and housing societies formed to accommodate catholics predominantly migrants. Today, we see most of these properties being sold or left ideal for encroachers. We want immediate action on converting these for housing needs of the East Indian community. Deadline December 31st 2013

3.Ten percent proceeds on hired premises for East Indian Community fundAlmost all parishes hire their premises for various occasions on lands donated by our community. We look forward to 10% being allocated towards East Indian community welfare fund to be managed by east Indians for betterment and empowerment of the community.Deadline December 31st 2013

4.East Indians to be appointed on the finance and property committeesAll old parishes had a majority of East Indians however today they are not considered for finance and property committees. We demand that an East Indian should be chosen for this committees.Deadline September 30th 2013

5.East Indian Associations should be given premisesOf late many East Indian associations are not being given premises and many a times only after having paid hire charges for activities and meetings as per decision of parish council or priests. We demand that all East Indian associations and groups should be allowed to use the church and school premises for their activities and meetings without any payment of charges.Deadline August 31st 2013

6.Development projects, Monopoly for hired halls, quadrangles and grounds only to East Indian businessesThe businesses owned by the East Indians should be given priority for projects and monopoly of premises. It has been observed that in some parishes the East Indian businesses are ignored which not be tolerated.Deadline December 31st 2013

7.The Word "East Indian Catholic" to be written for OBCThe families that apply for an OBC certificate need to go through a long process and there are blockades due to the church Baptism certificate. There is a compulsion to go to the Archbishops house which is time consuming. We need an immediate communication to parish priests directing then to write the words "east indian catholic" in the remarks column basis the recommendation of local East Indian association or professional.Deadline August 31st 2013

8.Space to be provided for East Indian businesses in parish propertyIt is usually seen that other religions support their community businesses by providing them space to carry on their functions. We suggest similar support to East Indian businesses at low ratesDeadline December 31st 2013

9.Properties donated by East Indians should not be sold, if parish cannot develop or use for the betterment of the community they must be returned back to the original owners. We have been informed on parish property donated by east indians being sold commercially. These properties were solely donated for the betterment of community and not to be put on sale. Henceforth, no sale to be allowed and original owners to be returned their property.Deadline September 30th 2013

10.Halls and grounds provided to be given at discounted rates for East Indians. There is not much space in gaothans due to increasing families. The east indians have been forced to celebrate their home receptions on church owned premises. The rates for the same are huge and should be lessened to make it affordable to the original inhabitants.Deadline September 30th 2013

MGP's Additional Point for the East Indian Community released on 31st July 2013

1)Church announcements of East Indian Groups - Deadline August 31st 20132)Land for the East Indian Bhavan - Deadline December 31st 20133)Monthly open meets with the community like done in Goa - Deadline August 31st 20134)St.Gonsalo Garcia Day to be made official and a Church in Bombay to be dedicated to the saint - Deadline Nov 30th 20135)Halls/Grounds to be dedicated to Cardinal Simon in each parish with East Indian majority - Deadline November 30th 2013

MGP Agenda to the Archdiocese has 15 points of which 7 points are due on September 30th. As communicated to the Bishop Team we will go ahead with our 10 point Action plan if the

demands are not fulfilled. We look forward to points for Action plan from our community members. You may call 9820087771 or email at [email protected]

The East Indian Community stops short of saying...

MALDISAO PARROAuthorities ensure lack of Independence to East Indians

The East Indian Community is the indigenous aboriginal community- "The sons of soil but what we see all around is saddening. The political and religious hierarchy have given a deaf ear to our demands and the MGP 10 point Agenda still hasn't succeeded in fulfilling any demand. MGP now plans to increase the pressure on the concerned authorities.

The political hierarchy have been presented with the Agenda but we have not seen any positive response. They know that we are a bunch of non-violent people, have a lesser vote bank base and a divided voting pattern in the elections. They know that our legal expertise is poor, we have a handful of committed community lawyers and a bunch of influential community members who have selfish interests. MGP now plans to meet some elected representatives and also send letters to various political parties to look into our demands. The religious hierarchy have taken the East Indian Community demands for granted. They feel that if the community has donated lands this has become history and now they want to treat all in the Catholic community has equals even on social and cultural issues. Finally, they know that the faithful will support them inspite of them being at fault. Our community in blinded faith may speak about the clergy behind their backs but don't have the guts to speak on their faces for fear of ostracism, nor do they support individuals or groups who raise their voices. The hierarchy that talks about the disunity in our community need to check the same within their four walls as Parish Priest make their own rules acting more like dictators and owners when they are supposed to be the servants and caretakers of the parish. The clergy are also known to speak sometimes against other religious orders like Jesuits, Salesians and Pillar fathers.

Come September 30th and our deadlines of some of our 15 demands to the Archdiocese will be due. If any of these demands are not fulfilled or communicated upon we will launch our action plan appeal to our community. We expect each East Indian to follow at least one of our action plans to ensure success in our Agenda. MGP had a good meeting with Bishop Savio and we are pretty sure that our deadlines will prompt them to rethink their stand. A fresh letter with additional demands have been presented to the Archdiocese and we await their response failing which we will go ahead with our action plan. We are also planning an action plan for the state/central government and the Municipal corporation.

The East Indian Community has been stripped off their rightful lands and now our basic rights. Our lands were grabbed, encroached, confiscated by the political administration and also donated to a voiceless religious hierarchy. They speak the world at political speeches and over the pulpit, and, forget the minute they finish. "Maldisao Parro" on the authorities due to the depressing treatment meted out to our East Indian community. MGP will continue to struggle and their problems will continue to increase till the time the powers that be have looked into our demands and fulfilled them.

We want our rights as sons-of-soil wherein the majority of lands were owned by us. These lands have the sweat and blood of our ancestors. They were cheated and misguided by the various authorities so curses will fall unto them for not using the lands for the right purpose. The authorities have pressurised, harassed and betrayed us for our hospitable, peaceful and respectful nature.

Maldisao Parro on all the authorities for being careless to our needs as aboriginals. The authorities will face the brunt for their carelessness with difficulties, challenges and impossibilities. May God Bless them all and make them realise their carelessness towards the East Indian Community.
