Local divers have identified the wreck of the Schooner “T. Charlton Henry” which was sunk in a collision off Fire Island, NY in 1907. The dive boat “The Lockness” and a group of local divers exploring the ocean off Fire Island identified the remains of the schooner aided by information provided to them by Freeport fisherman Richie Kissenger. John Gorman, Captain of “The Lockness” and a group of local technical divers mounted an expedition to the wreck site in July 2011. Let’s face it…there is more to diving than a bunch of folks with fins and snorkels. Often times divers come together for the greater good and make a consorted effort to give back to the sport that has given them so much. This is very much the case with The Bay State Council of Divers, Inc. (BSC).

BSC was founded in the early 1970’s in an effort to represent organized divers in Massachusetts. A member of the Underwater Society of America, these guys felt a need to step up and support their

industry. Managed by a Board of Directors, BSC meets approximately four times a year to discuss how they can be affective in their efforts. BSC sports a membership of over 700 individual divers, clubs, dive shop owners, charter boat captains, scuba instructors and other interested persons throughout Massachusetts.

BSC’s goal involves the dissemination of information relative to the sport of diving and legislation affecting divers while creating public sentiment for the

encouragement of skin and scuba diving. Members are asked to promote safety, education and conservation in the sport and to cooperate with and assist government officials in the use of diving in connection with governmental functions. The BSC also sponsors competitive activities in diving, keeping the sport alive and vibrant. Members are encouraged to give aid and assistance to groups desiring to organize diving organizations and to educate the public and diving community when it comes to scuba diving.

Finally, the BSC wants to advance educational and literary endeavors in the field of underwater activities thus educating the world on the plight of the oceans and waters of the planet. As a member of the Underwater Society of America, the Bay State Council of Divers sanctions local, regional and national competitions each year in scuba, free diving, underwater hockey, fin swimming, underwater rugby and underwater photography. beginning at 9 a.m. at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, MA. This is a multi-club event and all divers and diving organizations are both encouraged and welcome to attend.

This year’s event is shaping up to be one of the largest to date and the BSC is sponsoring a live touch tank for the children to learn and enjoy. There will be starfish,

crab, lobster, flounder and lots of other critters for the youngsters to be in awe of.

Every year there is a great turnout for this local event and coordinators expect the same this year. There will be take-out food available, lots of parking near the park and if you want to, you can bring your own food and beverage, just remember no alcohol is allowed at this family friendly event. Families are encouraged to bring their own grill to the park.

The Treasure Hunt is a local fun favorite. The objective is to find small objects in the shallow water; this ensures a lot of people can participate. Prizes this year will include diving equipment, dive charters, as well as other great items. There is a 4-person max on snorkel teams, while the Scuba Event is individual/buddy team. There will be bonus tickets for in-water trash pickup while treasure hunting. Proof of certification is required for the Scuba event. Local favorite and seasoned diver John Blackadar will be in charge of the safety divers as in past years.

Who doesn’t like a good treasure hunt? And with today’s technology they

can be more fun than ever! It is with this in mind that DiveCaching was invented and now divers from all over are taking part in the world’s largest hide and seek game.

DiveCaching is a fun game created by DEMA which allows divers to seek out “treasure;” “caches” or containers hidden at dive sites throughout the world and logged on a website using GPS coordinates and good old fashion know-how. It is a variation on the mostly land-based activity called “geocaching.” Everyone is getting into this new activity from retailers to certified dive instructors to divers of all levels. Tom Ingram, the Executive Director of DEMA, says response to the new activity has been really positive.

“It was introduced to the DEMA Board of Directors in 2011 and the decision to move on it was made quickly,” Ingram says. “We thought it would be a lot of fun for divers and a great reason to go diving locally. That is, after all, what diving is supposed to be, fun.” Ingram says they launched the entire program through social media, using a Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/DiveCaching). “We partnered directly with the owners of Geocaching.com in order to get a sense of how it worked on land and modified it for snorkelers and

divers seeking underwater treasure. After that it just fell into place,” Ingram says. “We created DiveCaching.org as an information resource specific to underwater DiveCaching but divers do their research to find these hidden treasures by looking on Geocaching.com. Once the diver finds a hidden cache, they log their find on Geocaching.com. Quite literally this website connects them to others who are also participating. DEMA launched the initial program on Facebook and the response was amazing.”

Divers playing this real world game are looking for a submerged cache with items inside at the different dive sites. Some you can find snorkeling and some you’ll need your dive equipment. Most of the caches are going to be hidden in water deep enough to require scuba gear so it is an activity for certified scuba divers. Divers are also encouraged to also get additional training before they go looking for these treasures. Skills in underwater navigation using a compass and other devices will be helpful as well as some skills in search and recovery techniques.

So here’s how it works…divers hide a cache underwater, they post the location of the hidden cache online and other divers search for it. When the cache is found, the finder records their visit to the cache using a waterproof logbook or slate found inside the

cache and puts the cache back where they found it. Sometimes the finders enhance the cache. Other times the finders simply put the cache back in the hiding place for the next diver to locate. After returning to the surface, divers log their find on Geocaching.com where they can also get coordinates for another cache.

Divers will find DiveCaches in quarries and rivers, around wrecks and other locations, including open water. Although a GPS signal cannot penetrate the water, divers will need to have a water-resistant GPS and an underwater compass as well as the proper dive training, after that…they are official hunters and can go out looking in as many of the sites they want to.

Dave Riscinti of Blue Water Divers in New Jersey is getting into the act because he thinks it will be a great way to encourage divers to explore sites. “We are planting caches on a couple of the wrecks off the New Jersey shore and also within Dutch Springs,” Riscinti says. “Dutch Springs is a place where a lot of dive shops do their training so it’s the perfect place to encourage divers to get involved.” Riscinti isn’t getting specific on where the caches will be hidden; after all finding them is the whole point. So divers run to your computers, log on to the website and begin your treasure hunt. For more info, visit www.DiveCaching.org. ■

Spectacular underSea dive Show along maine’S coaSt

There are many dive sites along the coast of Maine that come up during a typical

scuba related conversation about diving in the northern waters. One dive site, on the south coast of Maine, always comes up; Nubble Light just south of Sohier Park. It is here, with plenty of sea life including crab, lobster and lots of fish, divers tend to begin their quest into the northern waters.

There are several general rules to follow in order to make the most out of your dive trip throughout the Maine coast. Be sure and use a flashlight to peer between the rocks, diving with a drysuit will keep you warm in the cold Atlantic waters and be careful

because some of the rocks at low tide can be slippery. You can see almost everything on general coast dives without ever getting deeper than 30 ft. It is important, however, to follow the advice of local dive shops on where to dive; some of the Maine coastline can be dangerous due to rocks and currents.

Now for the Nubble Light…this dive site is extremely popular with out-of-state divers. Many divers choose it because of it’s easy entrance. It also has free parking, but with up to 150 divers on a single summer day, spaces could fill up early. It is important to note many of the dive sites in Maine have free parking, but even without other divers you have to compete with tourists coming to the coastline to take in the scenic beauty. At

Nubble Light with its lighthouse sitting so close on its own picturesque island not far from the main shoreline, it also tends to be a tourist favorite.

I was recently told once upon a time Nubble Light was so popular that dive shops from afar would bus divers in for training. They’d refill their tanks on site with portable air compressors. For the locals who lived nearby, it must have been like watching the US Marines landing with the noise of downtown construction inserted for good measure. Perhaps that’s why air compressors are forbidden at Nubble Light now and scuba diving is not permitted on Sundays. Gene Sutton of All Resource Diving in Sebec ME says the Nubble is a

pretty crowded site on a regular basis. “I don’t know all the history behind Nubble Light but it is a good dive site and can be crowded,” Sutton says. “You do have to compete with tourist but it is well worth the effort as an experience.”

Moving up the coastline, the second most often mentioned dive site is Kettle Cove, a part of Crescent Beach State Park. You can dive it any season, it too has free parking and an easy entrance. There is lots of sea life. Maine is infested with lobsters of every size, color and demeanor, but unfortunately, the lobster season is closed to scuba divers. Not to worry though, because lobster stew is already being served hot at a plethora of well-established Maine eateries. Kettle Cove has one of the highest amounts of juvenile lobsters of any of the twenty some juvenile lobster monitoring locations in the state which makes for a cool dive experience. The lobsters are nocturnal by nature, so you might have to peek between rocks or peer inside hollowed-out areas to find the lobsters hiding out from flounder, cod and seals. Divers should note that while I usually only carry my C-card for air fills or dive boat verification, in Maine state park officials may check your C-card, so have it readily available if asked.

A third dive site for your consideration would be Rachel Carson Salt Pond not far from Portland. Rachel Carson was an

environmentalist and marine biologist who wrote “The Edge of the Sea” in 1955 and “Silent Spring” in 1962. The local dive site is called Round Pond and you will understand the name as soon as you see the site. Julie Footnan, an instructor out of Aqua Diving Academy in Portland, likes this site because it can be a shallow or a deep shore dive and after having made more than a hundred dives at this site she still has not been below 110 ft. but when you are a good

instructor and busy teaching student divers all the time, the students come first and deep dives just have to wait.

Another dive site to consider is Acadia National Park. As Randy Cook from Aqua City Scuba in Waterville points out, it’s all about the visibility. While the visibility may be 12-16 ft. at other dive sites in Maine, here the visibility can go up to 20 ft. It has a rocky bottom with lots of marine life, but you’ll have to go out quite a ways to

get below 40 ft. The other side of this site, Cook points out, is the national park which lends itself to multiple activities. You may come here to dive, but you can camp, hike or observe nature above sea level too. When it comes to outdoor activities Acadia National Park is a real Maine attraction. Sutton adds there are very few places to dive in Acadia so you’ll need to ask a local. “The ones that are available have free parking but poor access,” Sutton says. “You have to carry your gear up and down lots of rocks. The vis is very good though so it makes it worth it.”

While the above mentioned sites are touted as the top ones in Maine, everyone keeps mentioning a few others such as Two Lights and Dyer Cove, which is close to Portland. Besides easy access and a rocky bottom filled with marine critters, there are lots of crevices to explore. One other thing about Maine I should mention is there are probably more boats here than cars in Detroit and kayaks are stealth bombers waiting to separate snorkels from masks, so it’s a good idea to carry a dive flag when venturing out and keep a close eye on the surface before rising out of the water. Also fishing line can be a problem, so always carry a knife and scissors to disconnect you from someone else’s snagged lines.

There are many more Maine dive sites I didn’t get a chance to mention. Fresh water diving is huge here too but that’s another article altogether. In the meantime, stop by your local Maine dive shop or ask members of the Maine-iacs Divers dive club for suggestions, I’m sure they can fill your dive log in no time. ■

I was so happy to start the season diving again this weekend. I went and picked up

my dive buddy Dan and soon we arrived at Nubble Light. We checked our gear, easily entered the water and headed straight down and out. The light was not real bright since it was early but there was sufficient light to see the usual Nubble Light underwater life. The starfish are young and small, the lobsters are too early to be around, the flounders were there, the skates were there, the seaweeds

were there. I was happy to be home again. I was the only one in a wet suit and,

thanks to considerate friends, we turned around soon just to make sure I didn’t get cold. The temperature was in the 50’s, which is not uncomfortable at all. On the way back, we saw a long worm with many greenish soft feathery legs. It was an unusual creature so that brought us a little excitement for the dive. The Nubble Light is a great dive with lots to see; Dan and I left that day with a good memory. ■

The Sixth Annual Legends of Diving festival is coming together down at Portage Quarry in Bowling Green, Ohio for Aug. 12-14. Jeff Rice, owner of Portage Quarry Recreation

Club Inc. is very excited about this year’s event. “This year we are placing an emphasis on Dr. Jose Jones, one of the world’s most giving legends,” says Rice. “Dr. Jones has been chosen for the Hall of fame and the DEMA Horizon Award Diver of the Year. This is his year.” Rice adds that Dr. Jones was also on the History Channel with the discovery of the Henrietta Marie. “When Mel Ficher found it he called on Dr. Jones,” Rice says. “He (Dr. Jones) did a lot of work on it. He is a very hard man to hold down; he is always busy so we

are very proud to have him join us this year.” Rice adds one of the things he admires most about Dr. Jones is that he will do anything for children. “Dr. Jones will stop dead in his tracks for children,” Rice said. “He spends a lot of time educating children about the ocean and even does special conferences. He tries to give to the children for the future of diving; I respect that.”

Also at this year’s Legends of Diving event will be Sea Hunt expert Alec Peirce and Free Diving Legend Robert Croft. Victor Worst will also be returning with a special surprise for divers. “One of the great things to come out of the Legends is the great friendships that are developed,” Rice says. “The relationships between these guys that have developed are amazing but then so are they.” Rice adds that Croft is the father of American Freediving. “He is stupendous in his presentation and the females seem to like him a lot,” says Rice. “They are curious about how he went so deep on his dives back in the 60’s.”

Victor Worst is a great addition this year because he knows so much about diving history,” Rice said. “He still is a manufacturer of wetsuits for the navy to this day. Worst has the oldest east coast dive shop. He was a heavy weight diver in salvage diving. He has some great stories.”

Peirce is a staple at the Legends of Diving events. His collection of Sea Hunt memorabilia is the most comprehensive in the world. “Alec has a great presentation to share,” Rice says. “He is doing something on a recent event he attended in Silver Springs. Everyone loves hearing Alec speak.”

The weekend will also be filled with presentations, scuba diving events, over $10,000 in contests and raffles, ceremonies, movies and a swap meet. “There will be plenty for folks to see and do as we honor these great diving legends and share in their recollections of the past and what they expect for the future,” says Rice. “Don’t miss this opportunity to see a living part of diving history.” For more info on the event visit www.portagequarry.com. ■

When people think of diving, their thoughts naturally turn to tropical

locations with warm waters and beautiful coral reefs. They imagine the seemingly endless variety of fish, crustaceans and invertebrates inhabiting the sea. Maybe they think of the many wrecks waiting to be explored. Few people though, think of the many inland lakes, quarries and rivers offering sights that cannot be found

in large bodies of saltwater. These fresh water environments create eco-systems abundant with unique opportunities that divers may never experience if they overlook the value of these bodies of water. I was reminded of just how unique these environments can be during a recent trip to central Wisconsin.

Ah, Wisconsin. Home of cheese curds and micro-brews, boutique wines and more cows than the human population of

Phoenix. This particular weekend, it was also home to one of Diving Unlimited International’s demo days. The DUI crew brought out the tents and enough dry suits to outfit an army. I was sent to the lake to photograph the event and take notes for our publication and, like the others, I have had the chance to attend, this was a great one. DUI really knows how to host an event!

I arrived to the lake a day early and had a chance to go check it out. After entering the county park we headed off down the road that follows the shoreline past the primitive campgrounds and through the 9 hole frisbee golf course. A map from the kiosk at the entrance showed five different dive sites, all easily accessible from the shore with buoys clearly marking the training platforms at each location. Immediately I knew this would be a lake I would have to get in and see first-hand.

I swung by Wazee Sports Center and

sat down for a chat with owner and local dive guru Keith Cormican, who has been diving the site since before it opened in 1995. He gave me a quick history lesson about how the site was developed as an iron mine and then converted into the county park after it was abandoned and the pumps were turned off. If he hadn’t mentioned that I would never have suspected the site had been a mine, as it appears to be a natural lake set between beautifully forested hills.

The versatility of the lake for diving is almost endless. Easy entry points from the

shore and many training platforms make Wazee Lake a popular place for new divers and classes. Technical and public safety divers use the lake for training as well. During the winter months, divers can be found cutting holes through the thick ice to take advantage of the 80’-100’ visibility. With depths up to 355 feet, it is the third deepest lake in Wisconsin. Visibility averages 30’-40’ during summer months but often improves as one descends deeper than the second thermocline at 60’. Bring a dry suit, this one is cold.

The weekend I was there, a class from Marineland Dive Center in Onalaska, which also has a satellite location just five miles from the lake, was certifying a group of new divers. Jason Zwiefel from Marineland said they prefer the boat ramp near Prince Bay Landing for check-out dives as it frequently offers better visibility and a gently sloping entry into the water.

Wazee Lake has several things to explore in its waters. Massive quarry walls surround the lake reaching extreme depths. Sherwood Forest, which was swallowed when the quarry filled, sits on a shelf at 60’ just waiting to be explored and the Wazee wreck, a 32’ cabin cruiser is easily accessible to divers.

to place more items in it to create points of interest for divers. At one point an effort was made to put a school bus in the water but the local government has denied every attempt, claiming the metals would pollute the water. Local advocates of developing the lake for diving argue that possible contaminates are removed from structures before they would be placed in the lake but opponents have not been swayed. With the size of the lake and the variety of depths, Wazee Lake has the potential to be one of the best fresh water dive sites in the nation.

After my chat with Keith from Wazee Sports Center it was clear to me if I only had the chance to squeeze in one dive during my visit it had to be a site called Sherwood Forrest. I quickly made a couple new friends and headed to the entry point.

It was a short surface swim to the buoy marking a training platform at 60’ and we descended along the line. Just past the platform, the wall of the quarry dropped quickly to 220’, well beyond recreational limits. We continued our decent to 120’, passing through two thermal clines where we explored the massive wall of rock. Visibility was great below the first 60’ and enough light penetrated the depths that no lights were required. Floating weightless above the abyss I realized just how massive this quarry was.

After about 15 minutes we rose to a shelf at the top of the wall that ran at 60’ of depth. We were entering the forest now and I got my first look at the 40’ tall trees that had been swallowed when they let the quarry fill. Void of all leaves, the massive trees stood ominously like skeletons giving me the sense that I was in some Tim Burton movie. At one point the trees and branches were so thick we had to swim single file through them as if we were following some underwater trail seen only by my guide. Huge bass swam lazily through the branches, looking at us with curiosity. This was a completely unique experience.

environments. Sometimes though, divers tend to overlook the opportunities they have in their own back yard. I hope I never get to the point though when I cannot appreciate the wonderful, unique opportunities that lie just a few miles away. This trip made me thirsty to explore the lesser known dive sites of the world. Wazee Lake, an abandoned iron mine, is a gem for divers.

For more information including detailed technical data, swing by one of the local shops and look for a guide book written by John Janzen titled “The Diver’s Guide to Lake Wazee” (Inland Sea Corp., 2004). Maps are also available at most local dive shops and the entrance to the park. ■

Puerto Galera is not your typical dive destination. It is the epitome of an

exquisite garden giving the ocean a long lingering kiss. Divers from all over the world come here to experience dive sites with names like Monkey Beach, The Washing Machine and Coral Cave discovering marine life that conveys all the beauty the ocean has to offer.

Puerto Galera is located on the northern end of Mindoro, one of the islands making up the Philippines. The Philippines itself is truly a wonder of natural beauty. Made up of over 7,000 islands, the Philippines is a place where life has opened its arms and invited everything in. Over seven hundred species of fish, 12 species of sharks and close to 360 different types of hard and soft coral are home here. Puerto Galera is made up of long peaceful stretches of beach inlayed with rocky coves and hidden nooks where a diver or snorkeler can find some peaceful diving. The inland area is a lush garden

speckled with locals and the occasional large town. Puerto Galera is known for its surface life as well as its over 35 dive sites. The archipelago is home to more than 3000 species of fish and 448 species of coral…a diver’s playground for sure.

The dive sites in the Puerto Galera area are as diverse as the divers. There is a site for any skill level from the beginner to the expert. Just as with any dive destination it is a good idea to check with the local dive shops and dive resorts on the currents and tides. My dive trip to the area included staying at Atlantis Puerto Galera and they were more than helpful in terms of knowing where to dive. My favorite dive by far was the Canyons.

Canyons The Canyons are located just east of

Sinandign, down a ways from the Atlantis Puerto Galera. A world-class drift dive, many people told me this was “the dive” in Puerto Galera. You have to be experienced however when you take on the Canyons.

The “Hole-In-The-Wall” had some strong currents but proved to be quite the ride. At the end of the ride there are three spectacular canyons in the reef. The canyons all have incredible walls filled with life and sandy bottoms, where you rest for a minute before continuing on. The sides of the Canyons slope quickly dropping down to 40 meters plus. Schools of drums, trevallies, batfish, sweetlips and the big sea fans will keep the attention of your camera lenses. Octopus, scorpion fish, sea snakes and other reef fish may get downright neighborly. The Canyons change every time you make a dive there. On a slack tide it can be a gorgeous dive for photographers.

Galara Dive Resort are the Sabang Wrecks. These are some of the most talked about dive sites in Puerto Galera. The Sabang Wrecks are the photographer’s heaven. This site consists of three wrecks; a small steel yacht and two wooden boats, all in different

stages of decay. They are a favorite hangout for friendly batfish who are expecting to be fed by diving visitors. They attract lots of smaller damsels, butterfly fish and surgeonfish. The wrecks have become home to most of the marine life around Puerto Galera. There are also numerous scorpion fish and stonefish living on the wrecks so this dive requires a bit of caution as well. You may also discover a giant moray eel, lionfish, crab and shrimp as well as schools of catfish and squirrelfish hiding during the day. Divers have also reported Stargazers, snake eels, flounders and pipefish. There are even frogfish on the sand.

The Sabang Wrecks are a great night dive with shrimp, hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, sponge crabs and decorator crabs to keep you company. The night also brings out cuttle fish of all varieties, squids, pleurobranchs, flatworms and moray eels.

Monkey Beach Just east of the Atlantis Puerto Galera

divers will find a coral slope that meanders down to 20 meters. This is an easy dive. If you drop in the middle of the bay, you discover a wreck at 18 meters, tilted to the side. Many frogfish, especially the black variety, have made this their home. Shy jaw fish, mantis shrimp, an abundance of small reef fish, crinoids and nudibranchs make this an interesting dive.

Dungon Wall Travel even further east from the resort

and you’ll discover Dungon Wall. Hard and soft coral slope and dive throughout the area making a sort of racetrack for marine life in the area. A wall starts at 12 meters and then dives down to 25 meters. The wall has lots of crevices with lionfish, scorpion fish and porcupine fish hiding in them. The wall also sports an assortment of nudibranchs and flatworms. During the colder months, a big barracuda has often been seen resting close to the wall. On a deep part of the wall rests a wreck; an old sailing catamaran. The two hulls make a great hideout for ringed pipefish, lionfish and puffer fish.

The people of Puerto Galera are special. Divers are treated with respect and kindness from the minute they step off the boat. The area is renowned for the hospitality, especially at its resorts. I had the honor of getting to know the people at Atlantis Puerto Galera. John Boozer, the VP of Sales for Atlantis Philippines Dive Resorts and Liveaboards, says Puerto Galera is one of three Atlantis properties in the Philippines. The others are Atlantis Azores liveaboard and the Atlantis Dumaguete. “These are all-inclusive scuba diving resorts,” says Boozer. “The only people who are here are divers and non-divers with the divers because that

The resort offers a great bar called the 50 Bar, which is a great place to unwind after a day of diving. There is also a full service dive shop, a photo center and even a business center for those of us who just have to call back home and check on business even though we are in paradise. Boozer adds that dive amenities at the resort are solely centered on the divers’ needs. “We offer as standard fare what we call ‘valet diving’ service,” Boozer says. “Our dive team will take care of all your gear for you from the time you get to the resort to each and every dive to when you are getting ready to leave. The only thing a diver has to worry about taking on a dive with him or her are their fins, mask and snorkel, we do the rest.”

I discovered that, besides great diving, the town of Puerto Galera offered some great shopping and above the water activities too. The local land life includes a zoo, kayaking, hiking and even some interesting local watering holes. There is a lot to explore both above and below the water in Puerto Galera. So next time you want an interesting place to dive that offers the best in human and marine interaction, head to the Philippines and more specifically Puerto Galera…I guarantee you’ll have a great time because I did. ■

does a good job of protecting your hands while diving. The glove is lightweight with a poly-mesh, high-stretch spandex-like backing so hands have plenty of freedom of movement. The palm side is a poly-vinyl suede-like textured material and provides protection in the high-wear areas. This poly-vinyl material is on the upper portion of the fingers too. The glove’s fingertips are boxed to afford more move-around room, yet they are still relatively dexterous. is a classic Spyderco mini-cutter that’s been upgraded with the company’s exclusive H1 stainless-steel. H1 stainless uses nitrogen instead of carbon in its matrix, giving the blade the hardness it needs to hold a sharp edge while being able to remain rust-free, making it a perfect backup knife for divers. The Dragonfly2 Salt’s blade is small but offers 2¼ inches of razor-sharp plain or serrated cutting edge. The Dragonfly2 Salt has a fiberglass reinforced nylon handle that is textured and the hole in the blade allows for easy one-handed operation.
