Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Our Challenge Dear friends, The prophet Isaiah relates that God relegated authority to Eliakim, a servant, instead of to Shebna, who was the master of the palace. God sees character and worth in people we may have hardly noticed. In some of the readings about Peter we see that he seemed very weak of charac-ter, very unpredictable and impetuous. But Peter was the rock upon which Jesus built his church. It was not because of Peter’s merit but because of his willingness and faithfulness which helped God use him to further the cause of the Church. Sometimes in order to provoke the deep or correct answer, we need to ask the right questions. Jesus put forth the most pertinent question to his disciples when he asked them, “Who do you say that I am?” The relevant answer came from Peter. He was able to answer correctly primarily because Jesus had asked the important question. Our world would be a very sad place without those who cannot see the gifts that all people offer. Our challenge is to recognize every person as a child of God and whose gifts we may not detect but can be used by God for good. It is within the power of each of us to accent the positive in each person. Everyone who thinks poorly of him or herself often acts out of this very negative position. When each one of us receives positive input, it changes a negative outlook into a more positive one. Seeing others with the “eyes of Christ” is a great help in producing positive actions. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy
Rev. Donald Bahlinger, SJ, “A Man for Others” 1928-2017 South Baton Rouge native Rev. Donald Bahlinger, S.J., was ordained into the Society of Jesus known as the Jesuit Order in June 1959 and went on to serve for 71 years. He celebrated his very first mass as a Priest at St. Aloysius Parish in 1959. He was given the gift of a commissioned chalice by his parents Andrew and Mathilda Bahlinger for his first Mass. Since he took vow of poverty with the Jesuit Order, Fr. Bahlinger entrusted the chalice to St. Aloysius Parish. A new assignment in 1978 brought Fr. Bahlinger to faithfully serve 25 years of pastoral ministry with the poor in Central and South America. He was very passionate about serving those in need. Upon returning to the United States he was assigned to a parish in El Paso, Texas and his final assignment was to Grand Coteau, Louisiana where he continued ministering to Mexican immigrants in both states. Fr. Donald Bahlinger’s visitation will be at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, Saturday, August 26 at 10:30 a.m. and Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m.
