Costumes and Make-up: All students in the show will need a costume. Some pieces will be provided by us, but most pieces will need to be found at home or purchased. I will let you know what you will need to get for your child. All students will also need a stage make-up kit, which are around $13-$19 for the basic package and will last throughout the student’s middle and high school career. Repeat Performance on Nicholson Lane and Gene’s Costumes in Kensington have a wide assortment of theatrical make-up; most students have gotten their kits there: (301) 881-0800 (Repeat Performance), (301) 949-4111 (Gene’s Costumes). Students should also purchase wedge sponges available at most CVS stores. It is not recommended that students share make-up or used sponges. Thank you for encouraging your child to audition! I look forward to working with the middle school students! Best, Dr. David Lyle Solomon Director of Arts Education X4929 [email protected]

MONOLOGUES

CHOOSE ONE OF THESE:

MUFASA

Those birds – they’re buzzards. I don’t have to chase ‘em away. They’re doing what they’re

supposed to do. You see, Simba, everything exists in a delicate balance. As king, you need to

understand that balance and respect all creatures – from the crawling ant to the leaping

antelope, which we eat. When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the

grass. Everything is connected in the great circle of life.

SCAR

So, you haven’t told them, your faithful subjects, your little secret? Well, Simba, now’s your

chance. Tell them who’s responsible for Mufasa’s death. If it weren’t for you, Mufasa would still

be alive. It’s your fault he’s dead. Do you deny it? Simba, you’re in trouble again. But this

time, Daddy isn’t here to save you. And now everybody knows why. But here’s my little secret:

I killed Mufasa.

NALA

It’s like you’re back from the dead. I’ve really missed you. Simba, I don’t understand. You’ve

been alive all this time. Why didn’t you come back to Pride Rock? Scar let the hyenas take

over the Pridelands! Everything’s been destroyed. There’s no food, no water. If we go back

together, we can do something about it. What’s happened to you?

YOUNG SIMBA

Hey, Uncle Scar! Guess what? I’m gonna be king of Pride Rock! My dad just showed me the

whole kingdom! And I’m gonna rule it all! Except he didn’t show me what’s beyond that rise at

the northern border. He said I can’t go there. What’s out there?

SONG

Students must sing one song of their choosing, although we recommend “I Just Can’t Wait to Be

King.” Please note: if students choose another song, we might not be able to play the piano

accompaniment for you. Equipment to play recorded accompaniment will not be available.

Also, it is likely that students will not get to sing the song in their entirety. We will teach “I Just

Can’t Wait to Be King” at the auditions. Students can also learn it on YouTube.

Lyrics:

Way behind the water hole

A little down the line

The jungle and the plains and peaks

Are scheduled to be mine

I’m gonna be the ruler

Of most everything around

From the grandest of the mountains

To the humble common ground

My reign will be a super-awesome thing

Oh, I just can’t wait to be king
