Domestic Graduate Application Procedures 2017-2018 Academic Year CHECKLIST FOR APPLICATION TO THE UCO SCHOOL OF MUSIC Complete your application to the University of Central Oklahoma's Jackson College of Graduate Studies. COMPOSITIONApplicantsmust:Submitthree(3)contrastingcompositionsdemonstratingvaryinginstrumentation,includinginstrumentaland/orvocal.SelectionsshouldbeineitherPDForMP3formatandemailedtoorsharedwithDr.SamMagrill([email protected]).

CONDUCTING

Applicantsmust:Submitavideorecording(aDVD,oralinktoavideopostedonline)thatdemonstratestheapplicant’stechniqueandmusicianshipasarehearsaltechnicianandaconductor.Thevideoshoulddemonstrateoneofthefollowingrequirements:

a. Excerpt(atleast10minutes)ofaworkingrehearsaldemonstratingyourabilitytohearandaddresstechnicalissuesthatneedensembleattention,suchasintonation,rhythmicaccuracyandprecision,balance,diction,etc.Yourrehearsaltechniqueshouldalsoreflectyourabilitytoaddressinterpretivemusicalissuessuchasarticulation,dynamics,phrasing,tone,expression,etc.

b. Excerptofaperformanceorrehearsal(5-10minutesinlength)inwhichtheensembleis

readyforperformanceandallofthecommunicationbetweenconductorandensembleisnon-verbalconductinggestureandexpression.

Inallexcerpts,thecameramustbefocusedontheconductorratherthantheensemble.Englishlanguageencouragedbutnotrequired.

MUSICEDUCATIONApplicantsmustsubmitALLofthefollowing:

a. Arecentvideorecordingofaband,orchestralorchoralperformance,classroominstruction,orensemblerehearsalthatdemonstratesteachingeffectiveness.

b. Arecentvideorecordingorliveauditionthatdemonstratestheapplicant'sproficiencylevelonhis/herprincipalinstrumentorvoice.Repertoireisthechoiceoftheapplicantandmaybeaccompaniedorunaccompanied.

c. Apersonalstatementofmusiceducationphilosophywhichdetailstheapplicant’steachingbackgroundandbeliefs,aswellasthespecificpurposesforwhichthemusiceducationmaster’sdegreeisbeingpursued.

Section3:SoloTranscriptionTheapplicantshouldannounceandthenperformawrittensolotranscription(32barsminimum)fortheirinstrument/voicedrawnfromarecognizedjazzartist.PleaseprovideacopyofthewrittentranscriptionasaPDFviaemailtothegraduateadvisor.

Section4:JazzPerformance&ImprovisationTheapplicantshouldannounceandthenperformtwocontrastingjazzstandards.Oneshouldbemoretechnicallyoriented,suchasabe-boptune.Theothershouldbemorelyricallyoriented,suchasacommonjazzballad.Onbothtunestheapplicantshouldplaythemelodyandthenimproviseoverthechordchanges.Liveaccompanimentmustbeprovided.SeespecialinstructionsaboveforPianists,Guitarists,Bassists,andDrummers.

Section5:Sight-ReadingTheapplicantwillbeaskedtosight-readwrittennotationinajazzstylethatwillbeemailedtothematthetimeoftheaudition.Guitaristsandpianistswillalsobeexpectedtosight-readstandardchordchangesandcompinanappropriatejazzstyle.Bassistswillbeexpectedtowalkabasslinewhilereadingchanges.Drummerswillbeexpectedtoreadatypicaljazzensemblechartandprovideappropriaterhythmicfiguresandset-upsasindicated.Vocalistswillbeaskedtoreadwrittenlyricsandanotherlineusingeithersolfegeorscatsyllables.
