Thank you for your interest in auditioning for a Theatre Tallahassee production!

If you’ve auditioned for us before, welcome back!

If this is your first time auditioning at Theatre Tallahassee, we’re thrilled to have you! We’ve been around now for 70 years, and we wouldn’t have lasted so long without new people, new talent, and new voices.

Whether you’re a veteran performer who just moved to town or you’ve never been on stage before but really want to try, we’d like to encourage you to audition for shows at Theatre Tallahassee.

We’re aware that auditioning can be an overwhelming experience, even if you’ve done it a hundred times before. We’ve put this information booklet together for you to help you learn a little more about the play, the characters you will be reading for, and to give you some idea of what to expect during auditions.

Please read over the character list and director’s comments, and pay attention to any specific audition requirements for this show. Then review any script sides provided. We’ve included a printable audition form at the back of this information booklet that you can fill out and bring with you. You may also bring a headshot and/or resume, if you have one, but they are not required.

Break a leg!

WELCOME

BECOME A PART OF OUR LEGACY...

We’ve been around for over 70 years, and produced more than 460 shows.

This season, we hope you’ll become part of our Theatre Tallahassee family.

ABOUT OUR AUDITIONS

Theatre Tallahassee auditions are open — we try our best to discourage directors from pre-casting roles.

Know what you’re auditioning for. Most directors provide script sides in this packet for you to study ahead of time. Do a little research online about the play. We also keep copies of the script at the theatre, so if you would like the opportunity to read it ahead of time, you can drop by during business hours and we’ll let you peruse it at Theatre Tallahassee.

Audition requirements may vary from show to show. Some directors like cold readings. Some might ask for monologues. For musicals, you may be asked to bring music, or wear dance clothes. Read the audition notes in this booklet to be prepared.

Audition formats vary depending on director. Some directors prefer closed auditions, where you will wait in another room until you are called in. Others like having everyone in one room. During closed auditions, if you bring someone to support you they may be asked to wait in the other room (unless you are a minor).

We know that it can be disappointing not to get a part. We always have more people audition than we have roles for, and there are many factors that directors have to weigh when casting. We encourage you to audition often. Just because you weren’t right for one role, doesn’t mean that you won’t be perfect for another.

We encourage you to get involved in other ways. Helping paint or build sets, costumes or props, working backstage, or volunteering to usher are great ways to meet people, network, and become part of our theatre family.

We look forward to seeing you on stage. Break a leg!

This production is part of Theatre Tallahassee’s Mainstage season. If you’ve never performed on our Mainstage, here’s a quick list of what you should know.

• Mainstage productions are performed in our main auditorium, which seats approximately 270 people.

• Rehearsals usually start about 5-6 weeks before the show opens.

• Opening night is usually held on a Thursday evening.

• Performances run for three weekends, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

MAINSTAGESEASON SHOWS

The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer’s sparkling new score does for the ‘80s what Hairspray did for the ‘60s. Just say yes to the most romantic musical in twenty years.

It’s 1985, and rock star wannabe, Robbie Hart, is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and, unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

The Wedding Singer features a large chorus with many featured roles for actors who sing, and dancers who act. Multiple roles are available for adults of all ages and skill-sets. And yes, it is our plan to turn this whole shindig into an Adam Sandler movie on stage - complete with some ridiculously funny physical gags.

NOVEMBER

OCTOBER

SEPTEMBERNOTE: Not everyone will be expected at every rehearsal in the first three weeks or so. Once we get into full runs, however, that expectation changes. Make sure to tell us on your audition form all of your conflicts, as we can usually schedule around some of them but new conflicts will not be honored. Any conflicts listed after October 22 will likely result in your not being cast, as this is the most important part of any

rehearsal schedule.

ROBBIE HART - Male - Age 25-35 - Vocal range: B3-C6 (Tenor)The lead singer of a band. Handsome and charismatic. A truly ‘nice’ guy that has the classic lead singer aura and personality. Also a bit of a dreamer. In love with love until Linda leaves him at the altar and breaks his heart.

JULIA SULLIVAN - Female - Age 25-35 - Vocal range: G3-F5 (Soprano)Waitress. The pretty “girl next door” in looks and personality. Engaged to Glen but falls in love with Robbie and is conflicted as to who to choose. Empathetic, caring, and brave.

GLEN GUGLIA - Male - Age 30-45 - Vocal range: D4-B5 (Baritone)Julia’s fiancé. A Wall Street broker. He is rich, shallow, and materialistic. Constantly tries to buy Julia’s love with money. He is a bit of a womanizer.

HOLLY - Female - Age 23-35 - Vocal range: A3-E5 (Mezzo) Julia’s cousin. Sexually promiscuous and always up for a good time, but wants to be loved and is looking for romantic fulfillment in all the wrong places. She is in love with Sammy.

SAMMY - Male - Age 25-35 - Vocal range: C4-A5 (Tenor)The bass player in the wedding band and one of Robbie’s best friends. A total guy’s guy, but beneath his pretending to love being a bachelor he is actually in love with Holly.

GEORGE - Male - Age 25-35 - Vocal range: C4-A5 (Tenor)The wedding band’s keyboardist and one of Robbie’s best friends. He is sensitive and somewhat flamboyant - ok...it is the Boy George role...so maybe not “somewhat”. The foil to Sammy’s super guy attitude.

ROSIE - Female - Age 60-80 -Vocal range: C4-C5 (Mezzo) Robbie’s grandmother who raised him. Motherly but adventurous and always trying to remain “hip” despite her age.

LINDA - Female - Age 20-30 - Vocal range: A3-D5 (Mezzo)Robbie’s fiancé who leaves him at the altar. Keeps Robbie around as a back-up plan. Is more in love with the idea of Robbie being a rock star than she actually is with Robbie.

ANGIE - Female - Age 45-60 - Vocal Range: AltoJulia’s mother. She is your typical mother of the bride with a little bit of snark thrown in for good measure.

ENSEMBLECouples; Wedding Guests; Stockbrokers; Impersonators (Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Mr. T, Tina Turner, Imelda Marcos, Cyndi Lauper and, of course, Billy Idol)

AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS

The first two nights of auditions (please only attend one) will put you through a light test of sorts.

Please prepare a short musical number (around 16 bars or less than one minute in length) to show off your vocals. Bring sheet music for our accompanist to play that is easy to read to give yourself the smoothest audition possible. No recorded backups are allowed - and please no ‘a capella’. Your best choice for a song would be one that fits the show’s style, shows off some of your range and is in keeping with the role you want the most.

After the vocal audition, you will be asked to dance a short combination to allow our choreographer to see how you move. We suggest bringing or wearing clothes that allow you a full range of motion - we will let you have time to change into them. You may want to bring water because it can sometimes get a little sweaty.

Finally, you will be asked to read from the sides we have attached in this audition packet. The number of sides available are limited on purpose to ensure we aren’t at auditions too late. Please review them all - but do not memorize them - as you will be assigned scene partners on the fly and may be asked to read for just about any role. Most people will only read twice.

If you are invited to callbacks, you will learn a song or two from the show and have a few more sides to read. Those items will be cold-readings and are not given out in advance. You may also learn a new dance combination if the choreographer needs to see one.
