2. CheckthattheSteinbergUR22mkII“mixer”isconnectedtothecomputerviatheUSBcable.Also,ensurethatthecablesareattachedasshowninthefollowingdiagrams:

2.MixerControlsFrontPanel

1. Onthefrontpanel,set“Input1Gain”(1)and“Input2Gain”(6)controlsto3o’clock.Thismayneedtobeadjustedlater.

2. Ensuremicrophonelinesoneandtwoareconnectedto“Mic/Line”(2)portaccordingly.3. Ensure“Input2Hi-Z”(7)switchisnotpushedin.4. Setthe“Mix”(8)knobto12o’clock.5. Turnthe“Phones”(9)knob,whichcontrolsvolumeoutputtotheTRSjack(10),to12o’clock.

Thismayneedtobeadjustedlater.6. Turnthe“Output”(11)knobto12o’clock.Thismayneedtobeadjustedlater.

BackPanel

1. Onthebackpanel,turnonthemixerbyslidingthe“PowerSource”(1)switchtotheright.2. Ensurethe“USB2.0”(3)isconnectedtotheiMac.3. Ensure“+48V”(6)switchissetto“On”.4. Ensure“2/R”and“1/L”LineOutputs(7)areconnectedtothemonitors.

Note:Forpianosetup,connectthepianolinesto“IN”MIDI(5)onthebackand“Mic/Line”(2)infront.

3.StartingGarageBand

1. LogontotheiMacusingyourNEXUS/WatIAMaccount.2. OpenGarageBandfromtheapplicationsmenuatthedock(i.e.bottomofthescreen).

3. ClickonNewProjectàVoiceàChoosebutton.

4. Removeallthe10defaulttracks(e.g.,NarrationVocal,BrightVocal,ClassicVocal,etc.)byselectingitandthenpressingthe“Delete”key.

5. Onceallthedefaulttracksaredeleted,youshouldbepromptedtocreateanewtrack.Setthe

settingsasfollows:

4.ReadytoRecordTostartrecording,clickonthe“Record”button,whichisatthetopofGarageBand.Fromlefttoright,thebuttonsare:Rewind,Forward,GoToBeginning/Stop,Play,andRecord.

Foryourfirstrecording,your“playhead”(theupside-downtrianglewiththewhiteverticallineontheleftofyour“timeline”window)iswheretherecordingwillstartinyourtimeline.

Whenrecording,theplayheadwillmovetotherightacrossthescreen.Theaudioclipwillappearredwhenyouarerecording,andthenturnedbluewhenyoustoprecording.

Herearesomehelpfulkeyboardshortcuts:

• “R”keystartstherecording.• Thespacebarstopsrecordingorplaying.• “Return”keyrewindstothebeginningoftheaudiotrack.• Tostartorstoptheplayback,pressthespacebar.• SearchtheHelpinGarageBandformoreshortcuts.

Whenyouhaverecordedsomeclips,youcandragtheplayheadbackandforthforplayback/recordfromanyspot.Youcantrimunwantedbitsofftheclip,orsplitaclipintomultiplepiecesformovingaround.Todoso,movetheplayheadtothedesiredspot,thenEditàSpitRegionsatPlayhead.

Youcandeleteclipsbyclickingontherecordingpieceandpressingthe“Delete”key.Similarly,youcancopy/cutandpasteclips.Youcanmovetheclipsbyclickingonthemanddraggingthem.

7.SpecialEffectsTheoptionalspecialeffectsareontheleftsideofGarageBand.

YouarenotlimitedtoVoiceeffects–tryoutAcousticGuitar,ElectricGuitarandBass,andLegacy!Theeffectimpactsallclipsonthetrack.Toonlyhavetheeffectapplytoafewclips,createanew

track(the“ ”buttononthetopleft)anddragtheclip(s)tothenewtrack.

8.SavingyourTrackWheneditingiscomplete,youcanexportthenarration/song:Shareà“ExportSongToDisk…”.

YoucanchoosetocompressusingAACorMP3encoders.YoumaywanttoconsiderusingtheMP3encoderasitismoreuniversalthanAppleAudioCodec(AAC).Note:OnlyuseAACifyouaregoingtobeusingthisaudiotrackinanAppleproductlikeiMovie.Youcanalsochoosethequalityoftheaudiosetting.Itwilltellyoutheestimatedfilesize.Itisalwaysrecommendedthatyousaveashighofaqualityaspossible,becauseyoucanalwaysmakeitsmaller(andlowerqualitylateron)butnotvisaversa.
