AUDIENCE RESEARCH Tufan Butuner
WHY?
There are many different reasons to carry out audience research, the main reason is to find our target audience. By sending a
questionnaire out to our sixth form it helps us gather whether people like the genre we chose.
This will help us because if our audience does not like the chosen genre and song then it would be better to change it to suit the
target audience. By asking a range of questions we were able to find out which
genres were more popular amongst our audience and if our idea fit the genre.
Q1 – HOW OLD ARE YOU?
As you can see in the image of our results, our audience is mainly 16-18 years old. This is because we
sent it to our entire sixth form. This helps us create a video that is
more appropriate and appealing for this target audience. As they are mainly teenagers and young adults we figured that our video
idea would be suitable as R&B/Hip-Hop is a popular genre amongst
this target audience.
Q2 – ARE YOU MALE OR FEMALE?
The second question we asked was about the gender of our audience. This was to get an
understanding if our genre was more appealing to males or
females. Our results showed us that both genders like it equally which is beneficial for us as we
can please everyone.
Q3 – WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF MUSIC?
Our group had expected R&B or Hip Hop to be the most popular
however Pop and Other were more popular. Although it wasn’t the top
choice, we still chose R&B because although it isn’t
everyone’s favourite type of music, they still enjoy it.
Q4 – HOW DO YOU COMMONLY ACCESS MUSIC VIDEOS?
We asked this question to get an idea of what platforms we could use to
market our video. Evidently, YouTube was the most popular as it is the
biggest video sharing website in the world. Due to it being the largest, it
means that we could reach to a larger audience rather than if we put it on
radio which isn’t as popular amongst our target audience.
Q5 – HOW DO YOU HEAR ABOUT NEW MUSIC?
We wanted to find out which social media platform our audience used to hear about new music. As we
can see, YouTube is the most popular option again as it is the
world’s largest video sharing website. This shows us that our
target audience heavily uses this website for music. This will be a
great place to put our music video to promote our video and artist.
Q6 – WHAT STYLE OF MUSIC VIDEO DO YOU PREFER?
This question allowed us to see what the audience likes to see in a
music video. In the results we gathered that our audience likes a
concept based video with a deeper meaning rather than a
narrative and performance. This is useful for us as we can possibly add this in our music video as it appeals to our target audience.
Q7 – WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT MUSIC VIDEOS IN YOUR FAVOURITE GENRE?
From this question we understand that our audience likes creative videos as well as enjoyable and relatable videos. By researching this we learn what the audience looks for when watching a music video. Creativity and enjoyment are similar as the audience could
enjoy the music video if it creative.
Q8 – WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT R&B MUSIC VIDEOS?
From this question we found out that our audience prefers the
narrative over materialistic items. This helps us as we will focus on implementing a narrative in our video rather than girls, money, cars or materialistic products in
general.
Q9 – WHAT NARRATIVE WOULD YOU ASSOCIATE WITH THE MUSIC VIDEO
‘POST MALONE – TOO YOUNG’?
There are a lot of mixed interpretations of the music video which benefits us as it leaves us
with many possibilities when creating the video. Reading the suggestions helps us produce a
creative music video.
Q10 – WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR NARRATIVE BEING ABOUT OUR ARTIST
REFLECTING HIS LIFE AND TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM REALITY?
Our target audience likes the idea of our music video which
reassured our group that our concept was a good idea and if executed properly our audience would enjoy it. This feedback is essential as it helps us decide if
our concept would be enjoyed by our target audience.
