Identifying Our AudienceAn important aspect of our research was to identify the audience for our film. To identify it we used the “BFI Statistical Handbook 2014” and this gave us many useful statistics and figures about the potential different audiences who could be interested in and could ultimately end up watching our film.

Age RangeWe have identified that there are two age groups that we should aim our film at. The first age group is 15-24 year olds as we saw that “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “The Worlds End” both appeared within the table to the right. We also found out that the age group made up around 50% of both of those films’ total audience so we can assume that the majority of our audience will be within that category.

The secondary audience for our film is people aged between 35-44 years of age as we saw that sci-fi films such as “Gravity” had about 21% of its audience made up of that age. This suggests that 1/5 of the potential audience could be interested in our film.

Gender SplitThrough our analysis of these tables we saw that 67% of “Star Trek: Into Darkness” was male therefore suggesting that the audience for sci-fi films would be mostly male. On the other hand we saw that in the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” there was an audience made up of 52% females. From this we concluded that sci-fi films can appeal to either gender.

From this research we realised that the gender-split was determined on the sub-genre of the film as different sub-genres have different narratives and therefore different audiences.

We decided that our film would attract an audience made up of mainly males because of its plot and narrative.

Class SpreadThe table on the right shows that for the sci-fi film “Gravity” 43% of the audience belonged to the C1 category which the table tells us is above average.

From this we inferred that the majority of sci-fi films audiences came from this class category. From the fact that the audience was above average we also concluded that sci-fi films were becoming increasingly popular within the C1 class.

Genre PopularityThe table shows us that there were only 9 sci-fi films released within the year 2013 but despite this they were the 4th most popular film genre.

This tells us that there is a large audience there for sci-fi films suggesting that it will not be hard to find and market to a target audience for our film
