Audience Research

We conducted a survey, to find different peoples perspectives of the superhero genre. Our group asked eight people the following questions:

1. What do you expect to see in a superhero film?2. What aspects of superhero films do you like?3. What aspects of superhero films do you dislike

The majority of the audience we asked, enjoyed the pulsating action scenes in superhero films. They appreciated scenes that keep them on the edge of their seat; and the audience feel superhero films are a way to witness this type of drama. Some female audience members, relished the opportunity to see handsome and physically strong male superhero’s participating in dramatic scenes. It became apparent that the audience also liked, the mysterious element surrounding superhero’s who have a duel identity, the way they live their ‘ordinary’ life and how they undertake their superhero duties. The above is also what the audience expect to see, therefore, it is interesting to see that the audience enjoy the typical conventions associated with a superhero movie; hence why the film producers are reluctant to change the style as it already appeals to a wide target audience. They also relished the thrill and excitement linked to a super hero’s super powers; which eventually in most films of this genre defeat the villain

The audience felt that some superhero films such as ‘Thor’ prolongs the action scenes, and this frustrates the target audience as they would like to see action from the outset. They also feel future films of this genre, should attempt to steer away from stereotypes such as the superhero always defeating the villain, as they feel this makes the film predictable and something of a monotony.

In conclusion, apart from a few minor alterations, the audience are entertained by superhero films. We avoided gender bias, by asking the same number of people from each gender; in order to obtain a more substantial and plausible research.
