Question 1Results•Indie – 3•Punk rock – 1•Heavy metal – 1•Alternative – 1•Dubstep – 0•Drum and Bass – 3•R’n’b - 1•Pop – 2•Country – 1•Acoustic – 0•Reggae - 0

I chose to ask this question because I wanted to know what music genre my audience liked best. The most popular music genres with my audience were indie and Drum and bass. These genres are very popular with the younger audience, as they’re genres that have only recently been formed in the last decade, unlike heavy metal and Reggae, which have been around for decades. Also, the image associated with these two popular genres appeals to younger people (Indie = printed tops/ blouses, skinny jeans, choppy hair. Drum and Bass = flat caps, low – slung jeans). I’m surprised more people didn’t pick dubstep, as this genre has recently become big with young people. I’m glad that my audience liked this genre, as they’re genres I like, along with punk rock, alternative and acoustic.

Question 2Results

•Classic Rock – 0•Dazed & Confused – 1•Kerrang – 1•Mixmag – 0•NME – 4•Blender – 0•Rolling stone – 1•Vibe – 1•XXL - 0

I chose to ask this question because I wanted to know what magazine appeals most to my audience, so I can analyse the reasons as to why it appeals to my audience. The most popular magazine with the audience is NME. I think this is because NME targets a mass market, which includes a lot of genres, but mainly those that are related to rock. Also, NME appeals to a young audience and are good at meeting their constantly changing needs and demands, by featuring information about the latest bands, gigs, albums etc. I expected these results as I know NME is a very popular magazine, as opposed to the other magazines.

Question 3Results

•Lady Gaga – 1•Jay-Z – 0•Beyoncé – 0•N-Dubz – 0•Chase & Status – 1•Pendulum – 0•The Prodigy – 0•Kasabian – 2•Mumford & Sons – 3•My Chemical Romance – 2•Metallica - 1

I chose to ask this question as I wanted to know what bands my audience like, so I know what band/artist I should include information about in my magazine. The most popular band with the audience was Mumford and Sons. The runner-ups were Kasabian and My Chemical Romance. I expected these to be the most popular because of the music and the magazine my audience preferred. Also, these are all fairly new bands that have recently released an album. These bands are mainly popular with young people, due to their image. I’m not surprised that an artist such as Jay-Z wasn’t popular, as my audience don’t seem to like the genre of music he’s in (R’n’B).

Question 4

Results•Social Networks – 7•Music magazine websites – 1•Retail Websites - 3

I asked this question because I wanted to know what my audience like to look at whilst browsing the internet, and how I could incorporate these results in my magazines in order to appeal to my audience. I expected these results because facebook is huge amongst young people . Also, I expected the retail websites to be popular because buying online is an easier alternative to shopping on the high-street. I’m quite surprised that music magazine websites aren’t visited more frequently, perhaps people prefer to buy the print version.

Question 5

Results• £0-£1 - 3• £2-£3 -4• £4-£5 - 1• £6 or more - 0

I asked this question because I wanted to know what people would expect to pay for a music magazine, therefore I could include the appropriate price on my music magazine. I expected these results because the average price of music magazines is usually between £2 and £3, and they sometimes increase in price if it’s a special edition (e.g. 10th anniversary). However, 3 people wanted would pay £0-£1, which is a very unlikely price for a magazine.

Question 6

Results• Physically

buy• Download

I asked this question because if I was to include any music offers, I would want to know whether or not to have it so the buyer can physically but or download the music. I was quite surprised because from what I know, people prefer to download music (e.g. from iTunes), as it’ a lot easier and it’s cheaper.

Question 7

Results• £0 -£4 - 2• £5-£9 - 3• £10-£14 - 2• £15-£19 - 0• £20 or more

– 0

I asked this question because I wanted to know how much people spend on music per month, as it will give me an indication on how important music is to them. Most people spend from £5 to £9 on music per month, which is the result I expected. However, some people may spend less on music per month because they illegally download it (e.g. piratebay)

Question 8

Results• Colours & decorations - • The main cover story &

picture - 6• Freebies - 1• Posters - 1• Featured bands and artists - 4• The brand - 1• Discounts - 1• Interviews - 3

I chose to ask this question because I wanted to know what features would be essential to include in my magazine, as it would attract my audience the most to buy it. I expected these results because the main cover story and picture are the first thing to catch your attention. And when flicking through the magazine to see whether or not you want to buy it, you tend to look for the featured bands/artists and interviews. The other things aren’t actually about the content of the magazine, and therefore aren’t enough alone to persuade you to buy the magazine, but they do help.

Question 9

Results• Radio – 3• TV channels - 4• iPod - 7

I chose to ask this question because I wanted to know how my audience prefer to access music, so I can include features in my magazine related to this. I expected these results because an iPod is a very popular way in which people (especially young people) like to listen to music, as it’s more accessible than Radio and TV channels.

Question 10

Results• TV Channels - 4• Youtube - 6

I asked this question because I wanted to know how my audience prefer to watch music, as I could feature something in my magazine related to these results. I expected these results because you can watch music on demand on youtube, whereas you don’t have much of a choice with music channels.

My audience results came back as ‘indie kid’ which is appropriate for my magazine because I want my magazine to be based around indie music (Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons, The Arctic Monkeys), as I think this rock genre is very popular with the younger generation. This definition on findyourtribe.com gives me a good indication of what indie is, for example it says ‘there’s nothing like the twang of a guitar to get your converse tapping’. Also it says that people in the indie genre will be ‘trawling through band profiles on MySpace, which gives me a good idea for a headline (e.g. ‘Best MySpace bands of 2011’), therefore I am incorporating social networks in my magazine, which was clear that my audience likes due to my questionnaire results.
