Biography [Biografia]

Fernando (António Nogueira) Pessoa is perhaps the best known Portuguese writer of modern times. He was born in Lisbon in 1888. From the age of seven, Pessoa lived in Durban, South Africa, where his stepfather was the Portuguese consul. He became fluent in English. In 1905 he returned to Lisbon, where he worked as a professional translator for commercial firms, while also contributing to several avant-garde magazines as an author and translator. His literary work is distinguished by the heteronymic fragmentation of the self. He wrote under the heteronyms of Ricardo Reis, Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos, and of the semi-heteronym, Bernardo Soares. According to Octavio Paz, Pessoa was “an inventor of other poets and destroyer of himself, author of paradoxes as clear and vertiginous as water”. Pessoa was an active participant in the Portuguese Modernist Movement and one of the founders, in 1915, of the Orpheu magazine. Although short-lived, this was the most influential literary magazine in Portugal. The only book that he published in his lifetime (and under his own name) was Mensagem, a collection of short epic poems that makes Portuguese history aspire to the level of myth. Seven years after his death (in Lisbon, in 1935), the enormous output of his heteronyms began to be published.

The letters sent by Gaspar Simões were never published.

CONTENT: Fernando Pessoa contributed, for some years, to “Presença”, directed by João Gaspar Simões since 1927. In these let-ters, various literary and artistic themes are discussed. Through these letters, João Gaspar Simões establishes a dialogue with the Presença generation and also puts together information that allows him to write Fernando Pessoa’s bibliography. In one of the earliest letters included in this lot, J.G.

LOT DESCRIPTION: - From Fernando Pessoa to João Gaspar Simões: twenty seven letters (46 pages) typed and with small handwritten annotations;- From Gaspar Simões to Fernando Pessoa: thirty letters (29 handwritten and 1 typeritten with a total of 36 pages). REFERENCES: In 1927, J.G.S., together with José Régio and Branquinho da Fonseca, founded “Presença” magazine, with the subtitle Folha de Arte e Crítica, the first issue of which saw the light of day on 10 March, 1927 and lasted until 1940. Together with Régio, João Gaspar Simões set up a group which would remain at the magazine from the first until the last issue, studying intelligently and in an articulate manner, the great names of first modernism (Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro and Almada Negreiros) and promoting them. In the biography section, he left two works that are not to be missed: Eça de Queirós’, “O Homem e o Artista” (1945) and “Vida e Obra de Fernando Pessoa” (1950).

26 Fernando Pessoa Original typewritten documents by Fernando Pessoa. Two letters sent by the poet:

- a typewritten letter in English (one page), to Dr. R. Austin Freeman, dated 29 July, 1932, about the translation and publication of titles represented by the literary agency, A.P. Watt & Son.- a two paged typewritten letter in English, addressed to Dr. R. Austin Freeman, at A.P. Watt & Son - London, dated 29 October, 1932 with an explanation on Portuguese editions, in Portugal, the Colonies and Brazil.

«Portuguese, as you know, is spoken in Portugal itself, in the Portuguese Colonies (which are scattered over Africa, Asia an Oceania) and in Brazil. I have seen the total population thus involved reckoned at 60 millions, but i do not know whether this figure includes natives in the Portuguese Colonies and “Indians” in Brazil [...] There is, again, the economic factor: it is rather difficult to get payment from distributors in the Colonies ant it used to be taken as granted - though how far it libellous i do not know - that no Brazilian bookseller ever paid.»

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Founded in 1875 by Alexander Pollock Watt (1834-1914), A. P. Watt is the longest-established literary agency in the world. It is also one of the most dynamic and successful. The literary estates this agency represents include those of some of the foremost British and Irish writers of the 20th Century.

39 Fernando Pessoa and aleister crowleyThe documents in this lot were assembled and organised by the heirs of Fernando Pessoa; their central characters are Fernando Pessoa and the English Magician Aleister Crowley. The relationship between the two dates back to 18 November 1929 when Fernando Pessoa made contact with Mandrake Press (Aleister Crowley’s International Editor) intending to buy some of the magician’s publications. Atentamente, Fernando Pessoa», translation from the book Encontro Magick, de Fernando Pessoa, e Aleister Crowley, Compilações e Considerações by Miguel Roza.

During approximately 2 years, Fernando Pessoa and Aleister Crowley (as well as his assistants and his lover) exchanged about seventy three letters. Some of these letters were about business matters (the opening of a branch of Aleister Crowley’s Publishing Company in Lisbon was being planned), and a few on Aleister Crowley’s simulated “suicide” at Boca do Inferno in Cascais, an incident which inspired Fernando Pessoa to write several versions of an unfinished mystery novel. The last letter exchanged between Fernando Pessoa and Crowley was dated 29 November, 1931.

Pessoa e o Mago Inglês Aleister Crowley.

REFERENCES: Magazine directed by Fernando Pessoa and Ruy Vaz, published in Lisbon. Only five editions were issued, between October 1924 and February 1925. Based on the philosophy of ORPHEU, it is a symbol of Portuguese Modernism: a place of theore-tical reflection and introduction to new territories in modernism. In November 1924, Fernando Pessoa explained, in an interview to the “Diário de Lisboa” newspaper, that the publication’s objective was to: “Dar ao público português, tanto quanto possível, uma revista puramente de arte, isto é, nem de ocasião e início como o Orpheu, nem quase de pura decoração como a admirável Contemporanea.” In addition to modernists such as Almada, Mily Posoz, Lino António, Luiz de Montalvor, Raul Leal, Mário Saa and Mário de Sá-Carneiro, literary contribution was largely assured by Fernando Pessoa and his heteronyms: Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos and Alberto Caeiro. It was published in two series: the first, between 1927 and 1939, included fifty three editions; the second, only two editions were published (1939 and 1940).Among other merits, it was “Presença”, that was responsible for rehabilitating the artistic proposals of the “Orpheu Generation” (no. 48 is dedicated to Fernando Pessoa), honouring the literary modernity of the men of 1915 and the demand for impartiality and rigour in literary criticism. Simultaneously, “Presença” played a determining cultural role in promoting foreign authors such as Proust, Gide, Pirandello, Dostoievsky, Ibsen, and the Brazilians, Jorge Amado, José Lins do Rego, Cecília de Meireles, Ribeiro Couto and Jorge de Lima.
