The Fenian Raid of 1866 was the invasion of Canada on 31 May 1866 underJohn O’Neill, with actions fought at Ridgeway, Fort Erie and St Armand beforethey retreated to the USA after 9 June. The medal was instituted by theCanadian government from 1899 to surviving participants, with clasps for thevarious actions. It should be noted that the Albacore class gunboat HMSHerring (launched 1856, broken up 1865) is not included in the list of shipstaking part in the Raid but HMS Heron (launched 1860, broken up Jamaica1881) and a sister gunboat, is listed with 11 recipients – presumably an error innaming on this medal.
