Robert Burns of Australia” taken from Advocate Magazine of Books & Bookmen 1945; included in the lot is a scarce copy of his father’s posthumously published ‘The Men of the Fifties’ 1938 fi rst edition with a two-page undated hand-written poem entitled “Rest” signed J.Neilson laid in, a fascinating group with some unique material relating to an Australian early 20th century literary person of renown, much in the lot appears to have been poorly stored and sadly neglected over a period of time, the books in fair condition with stains and smells from the effects of dampness but some of the fi rst editions scarce, the 1934 ‘Collected Poems’ signed with his dedication and his father’s posthumous ‘Men of the Fifties’ with the extremely rare hand-penned poetic insert both particularly desirable, considerable TLC required by a professional and caring hand to bring this little treasure trove back to life but the contents well deserve the effortJohn Shaw Neilson was born at Penola South Australia in 1872, the son of a Scottish-born labourer John Neilson who was also a writer of verse although Shaw was the most gifted of the two. Despite having had only the most rudimentary basics in education Shaw Neilson ranks among Australia’s best lyric poets. But while the works of his contemporaries Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson are widely known and loved, Shaw’s works are somewhat lesser known today. His output of published work was small by comparison with the better known writers of the time but several books of his poems were put into print and these reveal a remarkable talent. Like many writers in the bush at the time, Shaw Neilson was dogged by impoverishment. Despite ill health he endured hard physical labour throughout his working life and this eventually took its toll and brought about his death in 1942 aged 70 Est. $150

310 Police Strikers’ Association 1.11.23 badge 19mm in gilt and enamel by Stokes & Sons Melbourne (Smith 530) reverse impressed “25” gFine and very rare with only a handful known to existThe strike started late on Wednesday night 31 October 1923 – the eve of Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival – when a squad of 24 constables at Russell Street Police Headquarters refused duty, citing the continued use of spies by management (four special plain clothes supervisors were appointed to watch police offi cers on duty). The strike was led by Constable William Thomas Brooks of the licensing squad. It was not a Police Association initiative, although the organisation negotiated on behalf of the strikers with Premier Harry Lawson and his Nationalist Party of Australia government. Most of the strikers were constables, many of them returned servicemen. Detectives and senior offi cers did not participate. After 24 hours the Premier demanded a return to work and promised no victimisation, although there was no promise of meeting the strikers’ demands. After 48 hours the Premier again demanded a return to work with no guarantees regarding victimisation. The Victorian Trades Hall Council, surprised by the wildcat strike, volunteered to negotiate on behalf of the strikers but were rebuffed by the government. Subsequently 634 policemen were discharged and two were dismissed (about a third of the Victorian force)See also lot 120 for a Victoria Police bravery medal Est. $750
