Stated by the vendor to be from the Saint-Geran but lacking provenance certifi cate.

The 600-ton French ship ‘Saint-Geran’ was wrecked during a storm off Ile d’Ambre on the north-east coast of Mauritius on 17th August 1744 with the loss of the entire cargo including 25,000 Piastres of silver coin. Of almost 200 people on board, only nine survived. The remains of the Saint-Geran then lay undisturbed until 1966 when amateur scuba divers discovered the wreck and destroyed the site with dynamite to plunder the treasure. Many coins were thus procured before legislation was invoked to protect what cultural heritage still remained at the wreck site. Offi cial ‘salvors’ certifi cation often does not accompany Saint-Geran coins so provenance is conjectural Est. $150
