Welcome to our school.

We hope that the two years your son/daughter spends at Auckland Normal Intermediate (ANI) are enjoyable, challenging and lots of fun.

Starting a new school can be a challenging experience and we aim to provide a safe and supportive environment to make this transition as easy as possible.

Our school is an exciting place to learn. We have a curriculum which is future focused, integrated and student centred. This means your son/daughter will be at the centre of all our decision making and will take an active role and responsibility for their progress

and achievement. They will also develop new skills, explore alternative ways to approach learning and take part in new opportunities.

Some of these include:

• The opportunity to try out for a range of extra curricular and advanced learning activities.

• The chance to join a variety of clubs and special interest groups.

• Numerous options to learn more than one foreign language, perhaps for the first time.

• Engaging with a variety of teachers with different teaching styles.

• Being treated more like an adult and developing independence.

• Having more of a say in what they are learning.

• Participating in authentic learning experiences that include activities outside the classroom.

• Meeting lots of new friends.

This prospectus is a quick reference guide. You can also visit our website at www.ani.school.nz to find out more about what is currently happening at school.

The two Deputy Principals and I encourage you to work closely with us so intermediate school is a memorable experience for your son/daughter. We welcome the opportunity to meet with you and answer any questions that you may have about our school and your child’s learning journey. Drop by any time – the Senior Leadership Team look forward to meeting you.

A little bit about us

ANI is a co-educational school catering for students aged 11 – 13 years. We have approximately 700 students attending our school for a two year period. ANI is recognised as a leading intermediate school in New Zealand with a strong focus on personalised learning, student involvement and high levels of achievement. Our aim is to provide quality education for all our students in a safe, caring and nurturing environment.

Why are we called a “normal” school? Auckland Normal Intermediate School is associated with the University of Auckland, Faculty of Education, assisting with the training of future teachers. The term “normal school” originated in the early 19th century from the French word, école normale. The French concept of “école normale” was to provide a school with model classrooms, where teachers demonstrated good teaching practice to student teachers. This terminology is still used today.

Everything we do starts and finishes with supporting our students and their learning. This includes providing a learning environment that is safe, fosters a desire to learn and enhances students physical and emotional well-being.

Our self-development programmes include: lessons on mindfulness, resilience, coaching and leadership development. In addition to these programmes, we also have a well-established peer mediator and buddy system operating as we believe it is the right of every person to feel safe and supported at our school. Your child has the right to spend the school day free from the fear of bullying, harassment and intimidation.

If your child feels bullied there are a number of ways he/she can access support and help:

• Tell either a Teacher, Team Leader, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team

• Use a peer mediator (during interval or lunchtime)

• Tell a parent who can in turn contact the Teacher, Team Leader or a member of the Senior Leadership Team

• Report a Bully – an electronic and confidential message service on the ANI Google site that is linked directly to the two Deputy Principals’ and Principal’s email.

Peer mediators: Helping students resolve conflicts in peaceful ways.

Every year we invite a number of students to train as peer mediators. Mediators deal with minor disputes in the playground such as; name calling, friendship problems and exclusion. The programme has been very successful and we have noticed less incidences of playground bullying. It also empowers students as they take greater responsibility for resolving their own disputes.

Positive behaviour management: A system of positive “Awards” operates at ANI. Students can earn academic, cultural, sporting, International Baccalaureate and Principal badges. These are to be sewn on the left sleeve of the uniform jumper or school hoodie. Once the student has two badges of the same kind they receive a shield. Any three shields means they can receive a premier medal.

A safe, nurturing and caring environment

Visit the Ministry of Education website nzschools.tki.org.nz and search by your home address to see if you are eligible to enrol your child at ANI.

What if I live out of zone?If you find you live outside the home zone for ANI, then you are still entitled to apply for enrolment. Students who apply out-of-zone will be balloted and then accepted in the following order of priority determined by the Ministry of Education:

1. Applicants who are accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education*

2. Siblings of a current student of the school

3. Siblings of a former student of the school

4. A child of a former student of the school

5. A child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school

6. All other applicants

If there are more applicants in priority groups 1 – 6 than there are places available, selection within the priority group must be by ballot.

Enrolment – what next?

To find out further information on how the enrolment scheme operates and to understand your rights visit nzschools.tki.org.nz.

* This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary.
