The emerging economies of China,South-east Asia, India and South America

are changing the dynamics of global air travel.here has been a significant rise ine number of wealthy people in these

conomies. New Zealand is well locatedtake advantage of this growth. It is

stimated that 66% of the population ofhina and India will take one internationalp each year by 2032, and annualumbers of Chinese visitors to N ewealand are expected to double to00,000 by 2020.

The growth of these economies has led toa significant increase in aircraft numbers.

According to Airbus, emerging economiesrepresent 50% of new aircraft demandfor the next 20 years. Boeing expects thenumber of aircraft in China will triple in thenext 20 years and that Chinese airlines willbuy more than 5,500 new planes by 2030.

Auckland Airport is already experiencinggrowth in passengers and flights as aresult of these changing trends in air travel.

ur airline partners have told us that thehanging balance of economic growth ine world and technological changes ine aviation industry have had a significant

mpact on the way they will operate overe next 30 years. These changes havefluenced how Auckland Airport needsdevelop. Our vision has been designedrespond to these needs.

The introduction of larger planes carryingmore passengers has changed air travel while

    also supporting improved airline profitability.

In the next ten years the number ofpassengers flying in and out of Aucklandeach year could almost double to24 million passengers, and in the next30 years we expect the numberof passengers to triple to 40 million.

To put this into context, Changi Airportin Singapore today experiences morethan 50 million passengers a year.

The number of flights in and out ofAuckland Airport every year is expectedto nearly double to 260,000 in 2044.

This growth will play a key role in thefuture development of Auckland as acity and most directly in South Auckland.

A significant proportion of New Zealandsprojected population growth over thenext 25 years is predicted to occur inSouth Auckland.

Auckland Airport is already a key transport, distribution and business hub in this area, and the growth we expect over the next30 years means it will continue to be animportant business location in the future.

The changes in international air travel and theaviation industry have influenced our growth

    forecasts and our long-term plans.

Auckland Airport has the potential to developas a hub for air travel in Australasia and the

Pacific Rim. Our location also puts us in agood position to connect South Americaand Asia.

ustralias largest airports, Sydney, elbourne and Brisbane all face

hallenges to grow as hub connections, ompared with Auckland Airport.

ucklands potential as a hub airportenhanced because:

Auckland Airport is predicted by Airbus tobecome an aviation mega city by 2030with over 10,000 long-haul passengersper day.

As a hub airport in the Pacific Rim, we canprovide many benefits to business, trade, tourism and other economic developmentbeyond air travel. The area surrounding

Auckland Airport is already developing andit will increasingly become a destinationin its own right for activities complementingair travel. These range from businesscentres, hotel accommodation andhospitality, to shopping and recreationalopportunities.

Our 30 year vision and the growth weforecast in passengers and flights willcreate approximately 27,000 more jobsand improve the incomes of Aucklanders, resulting in a stronger regional economy.

uckland Airport has also looked ahead, eyond our usual 30 year planningorizon. We believe that sometime after044 we will need to extend the lengththe second runway by approximately

90 metres. We think that it is importantat we share this with Auckland city now

o it can appropriately plan for the future

We will retain the layout of the existingternational terminal, with check-in andaggage reclaim on the ground floor andecurity screening and passport controln the upper level. This will enable moreonvenient passenger transfers for bothternational and domestic passengers.ulti-storeyed car-parking buildings will beuilt close to the terminal with connectingassenger walkways.

new terminal plaza and forecourt will beeated by the crescent-shaped space inont of the terminal building. It will providelandscaped area for activities such as

public art programmes, temporarydisplays and events, as well as retailoutlets. The design of this plaza willprovide a memorable and uniquelyNew Zealand sense of arrival anddeparture from our country.

A new air traffic control tower, thatwill oversee both runways in the future, will be located in the centre of the plazaand a pedestrian-friendly walkway willlink the terminal to the many businessesand recreational activities located aroundthe airport.

The first phase of the new terminaldevelopment will be built within approximately

ve years. It will be developed around theexisting international terminal and will includeacilities for domestic travel at the southernend of the building and international travelat the northern end.

he new runway will be located toe north of the new terminal and willn parallel with the existing southernnway. It will be 2,150 metres long andill primarily support aircraft such as therbus A320 and the Boeing 777 and 787.he northern runway will also need toe about 70 metres further to the northan we had previously planned, to allowore space between the runways for theficient movement and parking of largerrcraft around the terminal.

ometime after 2044 we believe theorthern runways operational length will

need to be extended by approximately890 metres to improve its efficiencyand meet the requirements of the largeraircraft Auckland is forecast to receivein the future. This will also create greateroperational resilience for Auckland Airportshould the southern runway need to beclosed at any time.

To ensure we are able to operate anextended runway in 30 or more years,

Auckland Airport is taking part in theAuckland Councils Unitary Plan processto ensure the city is aware of the airportslong-term requirements for the runway.

Auckland Airport received approval to builda second runway 12 years ago. Changes

n aircraft size and the number of flightsmean it will not be needed for another0 to 15 years. The airport is

constantly growingas New Zealandsgateway to the world

Auckland Airport has carefully considered howo best respond to the future trends in air travel

    and airline operations.

    A streamlined,seamless experience

fter considering a range of options, weecided to go ahead with a design thatill provide for larger aircraft with a terminalyout with three piers and a larger areaetween the two runways. The airfield isesigned to enable planes to get to andom the terminal quickly with an enhancedbility to turn flights around.

roviding for domestic arrivals andepartures at the southern end of therminal will enable a faster turnaroundr domestic flights than if the domesticrminal facilites were in the north as wead previously planned. This is particularly

    mportant for shorter domestic flights.

Additional aviation support buildings willbe developed at the airport, includingadditional cargo and aircraft maintenancefacilities. There will also be a new centrallylocated airport emergency service facilityfor rescue and firefighting requirements.

These airfield enhancements will give usa resilient airport that can accomodategrowth in passenger and flight numbersand provide long-term capacity for boththe terminal and runway system. Theseenhancements will result in better airportoperations and efficiencies for airli nes,and their passengers.

    ey features

The airfield has been designed toimprove aircraft turnaround times

There will be greater separationbetween the two runways andterminal to provide space forlarger aircraft

Domestic operations will beto the south of the terminaland international to the north, making it more efficient

We forecast the number of daily trips tond from the airport will i ncrease from3,000 today to 140,000 in 2044. T heajority of these trips today are in private

ars. To reduce congestion, the balanceetween private car use and other modestransport will need to change.

ur 30 year vision includes a wide rangetransport modes to provide Aucklanders

nd visitors with greater choice andexibility. We are proposing better publicansport, better parking facilities, improvededestrian and cycle access, and a betterading network in and around the airport.

We have protected land for a rapid transitnetwork connection to the airport andallowed for an underground station at theterminal. We have designed space for anadditional express bus service, createdextra bus lanes and improved facilities forlocal buses and shuttles.

For those who want to drive to the airport,we will upgrade the roading network andseparate the terminal-bound traffic fromthat travelling to the business district andfrom commercial traffic. We will build twomulti-storeyed car-parking buildings andpedestrian walkways will connect thesebuildings to the new terminal.

Our transport vision will reduce congestion, mprove travel times and be better for

    he environment.

    We are workingclosely with

    Auckland Council

and the Governmentto provide improvedconnections tothe airport

improvedaccessLand for airport rapid transitnetwork and station

    ey features

There is provision for a future rapidtransit network and undergroundstation adjacent to the terminal

A new road network will separatevisitor, commercial and staff traffic

Auckland Airport recognises the importanceof its role in our neighbouring communities.

The growth of the airport directly benefits localareas through growing the economyand creating jobs.

ur vision supports Auckland Councilsocus on improving the South Aucklandconomy and increasing householdcomes and job opportunities.

he construction of the airport of the futurewill itself directly create thousands of jobsver the next 30 years.

growing city and airport creates a noisempact for our neighbours. We are workingo maximise the opportunity for the cityom a growing airport and at the sameme planning to keep impacts such asoise to a minimum.

We have made a submission on theuckland Councils Unitary Plan thatcorporates our 30 year vision and theoise contours for the northern runwaynd its possible extension after 2044.

We can delay the need for the northernrunway to around 2025 by carefullymanaging the use of the existing runway. We are also making a commitment thataircraft will not use the new northernrunway during the night from or to theeast. These steps will significantly reducethe impact of the noise on the localcommunities.

We will continue to work with ourneighbours who are most affected byaircraft noise. The airport has a programmeto provide assistance for measures thatcan reduce the impact of noise. Theseinclude acoustic treatment packages forinsulation and ventilation for housesand schools.
