What happens to your fitness routine when youcan’t get to the gym? Do you fall off the wagon ordo you power through it and continue to work out athome? For Sue Metcalf, being part of the LightenUp! competition means keeping up with hercommitment to fitness nomatter what. With some helpfrom her personal trainer, MoMerritt of Courthouse

Athletic Club, Sue keeps upat home when she’s kept fromthe gym.

Sue has a lung conditionthat makes her susceptible topneumonia, and she gotpneumonia twice over thepast month. Her daughter hasalso been chronically ill andneeds special care. Both theirillnesses made it impossiblefor Sue to attend her last few training sessions withMo. However, she continued to keep up with ahealthy diet and a reduced-intensity exercise routine.

“My life kind of turned upside down this pastcouple of months, but you know, you just try to keep your chin up and keep going,” Sue said.“Unfortunately I’ve been missing out on the gym,but with what Mo has taught me, I’ve been able tocontinue working out.”

Sue rested in bed when she

needed to, but during herrecovery periods she worked out

at a lower intensity. She feels confident in herknowledge of her body and is careful to not pushherself too hard.

After recovering from the worst of her illness,Sue has been doing mild cardio at home on a

Gazelle glider machine. “I try to do it for acouple of minutes but I don’t overexertmyself. Just enough to get my heart beatinga little and not hard enough to hurt my

breathing.” Sue works her muscles with some of theexercises Mo taught her to keep toning.Along with a little cardio, she uses aninexpensive body ball andfive-pound weights tocomplete lunges, squats,bicep curls, tricepextensions, abdominalexercises and more. It hasbeen more difficult to

discipline herself at home, but Sue’sdetermination pushes her throughit.

“I put together a routine from theexercises that Mo taught me. I’mthankful that I didn’t get sick beforeI was able to really establish arelationship with Mo,” Sue said. “It’s awesome to

going to whole grain bread, fat free mayonnaise.Cutting down ice cream.” So far, Sue has lost 10 pounds and several inches.

She is happy to see her hard work pay off, even inspite of her setbacks.

“What I havelearned from Mo asfar as fitness andnutrition has truly helped me,” Sue said.“I would be so happy even if I hadn’t lost apound, just to gainthis knowledge that Ican use throughoutmy life. It has beenreally worthwhile.”

So stick with it,even if you can’t make it to the gym for a

time. With a little ingenuity anddetermination, you can continue

your fitness routine at home andnot derail your goals.
