On September 16th the fifth g rade s tuden ts f rom Mrs . Roberts', Mrs, Gremli's, Mr. Kennedy's and Ms. Aversa's classes celebrated the federal observance Constitution Day. The s tudents co l labora ted and presented multiple ways to show their learning. Much to the delight of parents and families the s t u d e n t s s a n g , c r e a t e d performances and highlighted facts revealing components of the U n i t e d S t a t e s C o n s t i t u t i o n . Next, the students sang the Owasco school-wide PBIS song and with an i n n o v a t i v e i n t r o d u c t i o n presented Mayor Michael Quill. The mayor ended his talk with a student engaged question a n d a n s w e r session. Lastly, t h e s t u d e n t s concluded the celebration with an inventive closing to a successful exploration of the Constitution of the United States.

!We are in our second year of implementation of PBIS at Genesee Elementary School. PBIS compliments No Excuses at Genesee and the six exceptional systems we adhere to every day. Our first and most important exceptional system is creating a culture of universal achievement. Our Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports (PBIS) help to create a positive and proactive culture that we know will support student’s achievement.We take PRIDE at Genesee everyday by taking Personal Responsibility In our Daily Events; we do so by Productively Struggling, being Respectful, In Control, Dedicated to our learning, and Empathetic. Students have the opportunity to earn PAW tickets when they are seen exhibiting one of our PRIDE traits. PAW tickets are used at our PAW store to purchase various items, or used in the classrooms or building to purchase multiple rewards or incentives such as sitting on a bouncy ball for the day or eating lunch with a teacher or administrator.

! Every Friday afternoon at 2:40, each classroom teacher randomly pulls a student’s name out of their Character Can. The teacher then shares an example with the chosen student and class, of a way in which he/she exemplified a pillar of PRIDE. For example, the teacher might say, “Dave you demonstrated productive struggle when you continued to work on your math problem even though it was really challenging.” The student then comes down to the cafeteria and shares with the principal what they demonstrated, signs their name on the appropriate Pillar of Pride, and then has their picture taken. Character Can Friday has fast become a tradition that students and teachers look forward to each week.

PBIS was a huge success in our first year implementing it at Herman Avenue. Behavior has improved significantly throughout the building. Students are extremely excited to earn “Gotchas” for showing the correct behaviors in different areas of the school. Because we feel that we succeeded in Tier 1, we are continuing to move forward into Tier 2. Team members will be attending a two-day workshop for Tier 2 training in November. We plan to continue implementing and improving Tier 1 as well. We are very excited to continue implementing the PBIS framework and are looking forward to watching students continue to SOAR.

Seward Elementary held an assembly on September 9 to kick off its first ye a r imp l emen t i n g PB I S . The gymnasium was decorated with lots of balloons, and the brand new Seward Stinger Bee Mascot made its first ever appearance! In addition, our Music

teacher, Mary Howard, wrote a rap song and developed dance moves to engage the

students. All of these things helped to create excitement around PBIS, and Seward staff

members have already noticed a positive change in the building.Our Reading Specialist, Linda Miller, has noticed an improvement in student engagement and responsibility when transitioning into her classroom. Our first grade team has commented

that they can now teach with their doors open due to quieter hallway transitions, and they have also noted that their students overall are more engaged and respectful since students started earning Bee Bucks. Bee Bucks are something that students can earn for demonstrating any of our building expectations: Bee Responsible, Bee Respectful, Bee Engaged, and Bee Safe. These Bee Bucks are used to promote our four expectations, and students can redeem them for a variety of privileges and incentives. They will also be used by students in order to participate in the four school-wide celebrations that will take place this school year.

OWASCOELEMENTARYOwasco Elementary School recently hosted their PBIS kickoff. Students h ave p a r t i c i p a t ed i n l e s son s encouraging “Wise Choices” and positive behaviors. Throughout the year, staff will continue to recognize s t u d e n t s f o r c o n s i s t e n t l y demonstrating positive behaviors throughout their day including on the bus, in the cafeteria, at assemblies, and in the hallways. The students' wise choices will build toward school-wide incentives. We are thri l led to announce that the students have already earned their first incentive - Hat Day! Congratulations to the Owasco Owls for making “Wise Choices.”
