Many mes in recent weeks, I have found myself looking for the “fast forward” buon. Most everywhere I turn in Auburn, I’m either faced with a road block, a detour, or some sort of construcon or building project. But, while I’m fussy and impaent about all the mess and wish I could make it all hurry along, I am encouraged. I am encouraged because I know that these inconveniences will soon be a distant memory and that we will be enjoying a renewed downtown, more effecve traffic paerns, new shopping opportunies and a refreshed city and community. I am also encouraged by the posive, cooperave efforts of those most affected by the mulple projects—our small business owners and operators. I usually walk the downtown area once a week to visit the merchants who are face to face with the major work of the renovaon. Each week, merchants share with me the overall impact thus far, with the majority either beginning or ending the discussion with a posive remark about the mission of the project, which is to make Auburn a beer place to live, visit, work and play. To all business owners and operators in the direct line of construcon: Thank you for your understanding! For those of you not directly impacted, please connue to support your friends and neighbors in downtown Auburn, even if it means braving a bit of inconvenience. This past week, Auburn Chamber volunteers, staff and board members delivered more than 2,300 copies of the annual Auburn Welcome magazine to our local membership during an event we call Operaon Thank You. Over 25,000 copies of the publicaon were also delivered to Auburn University for distribuon to new students, faculty and staff. Many, many thanks to our volunteers who make it possible to reach all of our members! The board of Leadership Lee County will be gathering this month to plan the class schedules and speakers for the 2015-2016 class. This year’s programs will be managed by our board secretary, Anna Hovey, who will be serving as the interim execuve director for Leadership Lee County for the next 12 months. We appreciate her dedicaon to the program and willingness to take on this important role. Leadership Lee County applicaons will be available in the coming weeks. Many times in recent weeks, I have found myself looking for the “fast forward” button. Most everywhere I turn in Auburn, I’m either faced with a road block, a detour, or some sort of construction or

building project. But, while I’m fussy and impatient about all the mess and wish I could make it all hurry along, I am encouraged. I am encouraged because I know that these inconveniences will soon be a distant memory and that we will be enjoying a renewed downtown, more effective traffic patterns, new shopping opportunities and a refreshed city and community. I am also encouraged by the positive, cooperative efforts of those most affected by the multiple projects—our small business owners and operators. I usually walk the downtown area once a week to visit the merchants who are face to face with the major work of the renovation. Each week, merchants share with me the overall impact thus far, with the majority either beginning or ending the discussion with a positive remark about the mission of the project, which is to make Auburn a better place to live, visit, work and play. To all business owners and operators in the direct line of construction: Thank you for your understanding! For those of you not directly impacted, please continue to support your friends and neighbors in downtown Auburn, even if it means braving a bit of inconvenience.

This past week, Auburn Chamber volunteers, staff and board members delivered more than 2,300 copies of the annual Auburn Welcome magazine to our local membership

The Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) recently announced the state nominees for the national ACT College- and Career-Ready Campaign and EAMC collected the Workplace Success Award. The campaign celebrates achievement and creates awareness around the goal of college- and career-readiness for all. For the third year, ACT partnered with Alabama and selected states for the College and Career Readiness Campaign to nominate students, schools, community colleges and employers.

After receiving the Workplace Success Award for Alabama at the ALSDE meeting, EAMC officials learned that the hospital was one of only four semifinalists for the national award (out of 180 submissions from 30 states). While EAMC did not win the national award, that didn’t dampen the spirits of Karen Gresham, director of education services at EAMC. “I think it is quite an honor for our workforce development efforts to be recognized at a national level,” says Gresham. “Our vision statement is ‘to be a national leader in quality, cost and service’ and having a highly competent workforce goes right along with doing that.” Gresham praised administration for its commitment in this area. “Striving to have each employee succeed in their endeavors is a real goal of our senior leadership team and I think

that speaks highly of our organization. We’re never satisfied with good enough; we want to be the best.”

The ALSDE cited the following examples when honoring EAMC with the Workplace Success Award:• Earn and Learn—The Earn and Learn program at EAMC is for local high school health occupations (HOSA) students. EAMC selects 10 HOSA students each year to hire during their senior year who are given the opportunity to work 20 hours a week in their field of interest for one semester. This allows these students to gain work experience, build confidence, and affirm their career choice. Many of these students have gone on to be awarded scholarships and continued employment.

• Education—EAMC offers a variety of free educational and developmental opportunities and programs, driven by a strategic direction, allowing employees to gain, maintain and improve knowledge and skills. For example, the School at Work (SAW) Program is an eight-month program where participants improve their reading, math and work readiness skills. This program is in its 10th year with graduates who have advanced their careers through promotions and continued education. All SAW students graduate with an ACT Work Keys certificate.

Employer nominees are evaluated based on the following: (1) Strength of relationships with local colleges and high schools(2) Use of career readiness assessments for recruitment and advancement within the company(3) Dedication to providing employees with opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills(4) Demonstrated effort to create and maintain diversity in its workforce

East Alabama Medical Center is a 340-bed regional referral hospital located in Opelika that serves a six-county area. It also is affiliated with the hospital in Valley now, which changed its name to EAMC-Lanier in February 2014 to reflect this new affiliation. Between the two hospitals, there are more than 3,000 employees. EAMC is Lee County’s second largest employer.
