NEVADA MINING INDUSTRY
GLOBAL MINERAL PRODUCTION:WHERE NEVADA STANDS
Applied Analysis was retained by the Nevada Mining Association (the “NVMA”) to review and analyze the economic impacts associated with mining operations in Nevada as well as the mining industry more generally. This brief summarizes Nevada mineral production and how it ranks nationally and internationally.
Trend in Number of Nevada Operators
Global Mineral Production
JANUARY 2014
The number of mining operators in Nevada has been trending upward since 2009. In 2012, there were 126 operators in the state, up 9.6 percent from 2011.
Nevada’s diatomite production accounts for 18.7 percent of the global total; if it were a country, Nevada would be the third-highest producer of the mineral in the world. The state also ranks within the top 10 in terms of global gold production with a share of 5.9 percent. In terms of silver and copper production, Nevada ranks twelfth and fifteenth, respectively.

METHODOLOGY This research brief utilized the best available data to summarize global mineral production. Data generally covers calendar year 2012, with some data reported for 2011. It relies heavily on data reported by third-party data providers; and, although we have no reason to doubt the accuracy of these data, they have not been subjected to any auditing or review procedures by AA. Data was obtained from the Nevada Department of Taxation, the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Mining Association, and the Nevada Division of Minerals.
