Attention Ohio State University faculty and staff on the Columbus campus! Help support your favorite local charities

by participating in the 2010 Bucks for Charity Drive.

Offering you an opportunity to support:

Take away charitable social services and those in need will find a way to survive. The human race is nothing if not resilient.

But not every step in life need be a struggle, and basic survival shouldn’t be the highest achievable level. That’s why Licking County United Way, one of 300 central Ohio not-for-profit associations Ohio State employees can choose to support in the annual Bucks for Charity cam-paign that runs through Dec. 10, endeavors to find ways to fill in the most necessary gaps.

For 77 years, LCUW has been a strong community resource, along with its 23 community partners, funding programs that cover a wide swath: Youth development, senior enrichment, basic and emergency needs, health needs and family cohesiveness.

“I’m not sure all the programs we currently help fund could be as effective if they had to put the energy into the fundraising like United Way does,” said Sylvia Friel, LCUW community impact director. “It would take away from providing client services.”

Licking County United Way has set a doable goal of $1.94 million for its fundraising this year.

“At this point in the campaign, we’re cautiously optimistic,” said Ruth Handelman, LCUW’s marketing director. “When times are tough, people can identify with it. They’re seeing it with neighbors, friends and family. They understand how great the need is. That in turn translates to support.

“So the key is everybody can play a role in this. You do not need to be a huge donor to make a difference. Every-body can give at their ability and still make an impact.”

Bucks for Charity is a critical part of LCUW’s fundraising effort, Handelman said, and historically the donations have been excellent. Last year, Bucks for Charity raised nearly $10,000 for the organization, giving donors the opportunity to put money directly into their own community.

Donor money has supported LCUW partner programs that have been runaway successes in recent years.

Health and its affordability was one of the key issues that was identified during a community needs assessment performed four years ago by LCUW and more than 80 community partners.

Licking County United Way began distributing in April 2006 the Family Wize Prescription Drug Discount Card, which delivers an average of 35 percent savings on any FDA-approved prescription drug at participating pharma-cies across the country. Every year, LCUW has been handing the card out through its fundraising campaign, through its partners, via the unemployment office, community businesses, and through doctors and pharmacies.

“People with no insurance or seniors who fell into the Medicare ‘donut hole’ have benefited greatly,” Friel said. “We’ve also recently learned that even pet medicine that is also human medication is covered.”

In the past four years, Licking County residents submitted 58,000 claims and have saved more than $1 million through the program.

Newark’s Glenda Hampton, who received a card while a loan executive at the local United Way, told the Newark Advocate newspaper that as a diabetic with “tons of medications,” the card has saved her $1,000 over the four-year period.

“I think it’s great,” Hampton said. “I want the whole world to know about it. It’s a discount card. If you clip

If you’re looking for a way to make a real difference in our community, we’re the ones who can help. At United Way of Central Ohio, we focus on the four basic building blocks of a better life: Education, Income, Health and Home. We do it because helping in one area has an impact on all areas. We do it because it’s the most effective way to change people’s lives. And we do it to strengthen our community and make it a better place — for all of us.

coupons, then get yourself a drug card. I would be hurting financially if I didn’t have the drug card. It is one of the best-kept secrets.”

Another program that has proven valuable to the community fell under the auspices of Licking County’s other huge need: Better management of youth drug, alcohol and mental health issues.

Professionals who worked with these troubled youth partnered with LCUW to identify the need for a team facilitator — a person who could work with different systems and the affected families so children could remain in the home while getting treatment.

Licking County United Way received grants for two years of funding. In the first year, the facilitator program saved the community around $400,000.

“When you keep a child in the home and work with the family, it will strengthen the family,” Friel said. “This will help the child in the long run.”

Handelman said many people have the miscon-ception that United Way is merely a fundraising machine when in fact it is just as much a people motivator and program creator.

Licking County United Way is tuned in to its community and delivers help where it is needed most.

“I hope that hearing what an impact their dollars make in this community, donors can trust their support to United Way is making a difference where they live and work,” Handelman said. “We’re looking at spending their dollars on things that get results.”
