CAUSES: y Japan wanted to gain control of Asia and expand its empire y Japan had already invaded China and began illegally

occupying territories in the Pacific region y USA, in order to protect DEMOCRACY, began producing

ammunition for the Allies y USA feared Japanese expansion and in turn, cut off oil

supplies to Japan y USA then cut all economic ties with Japan y Japan attacked Pearl Harbor as a preventative action in order

to keep the USA from influencing the war that Japan was planning in Asia against Britain and the Netherlands

EVENT: y Japan launched a SURPRISE attack

against the US Naval base stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

y TWO aerial attack waves totalling 353 aircraft

y Launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers

y this attack was intended to give Japan’s navy control of the Pacific in preparations for further attacks

Germany and Axis members declare war on USA y 18 ships sunk and ½ the American fleet was left crippled or sunk

LONG-TERM RESULTS: y WWII becomes a global war (and USA is fully involved) y North America is NOT safe from invasions (originally thought

CANADIAN RELATED RESULTS: y After Pearl Harbor, North America went into panic mode y Canada feared that Japanese Canadians were not loyal and would

help Japan if its army invaded British Columbia y Prime Minister Mackenzie King issued the “War Measures

Act” which restricted the rights of 22,000 Japanese Canadians (of whom 20,000 were born in Canada)
