how to create our

Thick friezes, textured loops and deep plush piles are ‘Blanc’ style carpets. Colours are shades of white, pale blush and beige or contrasting light to mid greys. Décor is contemporary with classic detail.

With regular care you can keep your new carpet looking good. Below are some simple tips to ensure you protect your investment.

It is important to vacuum your carpet thoroughly and frequently, particularly in high traffi c areas. Vacuuming not only prolongs the life of the carpet but also enhances its appearance.

WHAT TYPE OF VACUUM SHOULD I USE?To effectively clean your carpet use only a quality vacuum cleaner.

For low cut pile carpet use a vacuum with a rotating brush which agitates the pile and loosens the soil. Vacuum initially against the natural pile direction and fi nish in the direction of the pile to achieve a uniform fi nish.

For loops, friezes and sisals use a vacuum cleaner without a beater brush or turn the brush off to prevent excess fuzzing of the pile.

Depending on usage, carpet should be professionally steam cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Oily, sticky and well-settled soil that vacuums don’t remove causes gradual but signifi cant dulling of colours. To remove and revitalise your carpet, have it professionally cleaned. Use only a professional cleaner in accordance with Australian/New Zealand Standards AS/NZS 3733:1995.

Other ways to care for your carpetUse door mats near all exterior doorways and entrances to carpeted areas to trap dirt and moisture from shoes. Clean mats regularly.

Use furniture cups and occasionally rearrange furniture to alleviate pressure marks.

Protect your carpet from prolonged periods of direct sunlight with curtains, blinds or awnings.

And last but not least, enjoy your carpet!

Carpet StyleTailored geometric shapes create modern patterns in level loop and cut pile as well as loop pile carpets. Warm greys, cool charcoals and neutral tones rule the palette while classic quality twists add a touch of class.

Perfect PigmentHighlights of opal and deep blue greens create a sophisticated contrast against natural whites and light warm greys. Touches of caramel brownand shades of black complete the palette.

Décor FinishesDark timbers, glass and polished chrome refl ect the ‘Metropolis’ trend. Fabrics continue the masculine theme with leather, cowhide, tweed and traditional wool fi nishes.

Carpet StyleWhen using shades of white, texture is the key element. Thick friezes and textured loops in creamy tones adorn the fl oors in a ‘Blanc’ room.

Perfect PigmentThis monochromatic palette is built with shades of white from vivid to ecru. ‘Blanc’ is about white & black not black & white. White interiors are punctuated with cool greys and minimal black.

Décor Finishes‘Blanc’ furniture fi nishes are characterised by painted and limed timbers, translucent acrylics and glass. Fabrics are self patterned and textured or accented with beading and sequins in monochromatic schemes.

BRIGHT IDEAFor an authentic ‘Modern Rustic’ feel renew family heirlooms and give them pride of place in your home alongside your newly found objects of desire.

Carpet StyleCarpet with character works best for a ‘Modern Rustic’ feel. Use earthy tones or subtle hues of blue and grey in loop piles and twists.

Perfect Pigment Deep or de-saturated grey blue hues, fresh paper whites and linen tones create an ideal ‘Modern Rustic’ palette. Greys are a favourite - either blue based or warm toned, teamed with creamy white accents.

Décor FinishesSubtle, natural materials such as linen and rattan form a ‘Modern Rustic’ impression. Handcrafted details such as patchwork and embroidery create texture. Furniture is raw and worn, simple and unadorned, utilitarian in function or constructed with simple materials.

ABOVE RIGHT The natural appearance of CARPETS textured sisal loop pile, offsets the vintage timber doors in this ‘Modern Rustic’ entry.

styleWhen asked to describe her style, Deborah Schmideg uses words such as contemporary and modern. “The interiors I design are minimalistic but not too harsh. I love the use of varying textures to add warmth to modern spaces,” she says.

So what is the best advice Deborah would give to those about to redecorate? “The room must have a focal point or element of interest, a pendant light, artwork or a feature inset of carpet, to add colour and texture to otherwise clean lines.”

Deborah specifi ed a

CARPETS plush pile (pictured right) in her latest project. Utilising the clients existing furniture, artwork and accessories resulted in an eclectic interior with a modern edge.

Deborah’s Design Tips

01. Select a carpet - they offer strong colour selection and a fabulous range of styles.

02. Use mid tones that tend to be more “forgiving” such as coffees, greys and chocolates.

03. Avoid light colours in heavy traffi c areas.

04. Add highlights to rooms using wall colour, accessories or a feature carpet to lighten the space.

05. Choose carpet that is serviceable and easy to maintain.

06. Try low-level loop pile and cut pile carpets - my favourite.

07. Pictured above are my top 3 carpets -

a plush pile, a modulated loop and a tailored loop pile - each of them look perfect in any interior.

Leading interior designer Deborah Schmideg gives you top tips on choosing carpet and a peek at her design style.

Lots of stuff but no space to put it? Hide it under the bed! Have drawers made or purchase good quality storage baskets that slide easily underneath, the result - a room that can be cleaned up in no time!!

emptynestersFour years ago when Andrew

and Louise bought this family home it was in need of some TLC - Louise thought the home was full of potential. “I could visualise exactly how to make it our own” she says. Andrew however needed a little more convincing; “Louise had some pretty specifi c ideas, it was a bit harder for me to imagine.”

But Andrew wasn’t disappointed; Louise’s plans have resulted in a bright airy family friendly home. “When friends see what we’ve done, the biggest compliment we get is on the carpet in the living and dining room area. I think everyone expected us to repolish the fl oor boards but I just wanted to have a comfortable fl oor for Sam to play on.” Louise says.

Louise and Andrew’s kids relish in playing on the fl oor. Since laying the new carpet, Louise has noticed their 8-month old daughter, Sam is getting around with no diffi culty. “I think it’s been easier for Sam to start crawling. The fl oorboards were a slippery surface and she couldn’t get a grip. Daniel also plays on the fl oor more” explains Louise.

Each carpet is also tested for its suitability for use on stairs, where if it is deemed suitable, then this is also listed on the ACCS label for your reference. For further information visit www.godfreyhirst.com/ratings-explained.html

As part of CARPETS ongoing commitment to green manufacturing we are licensed to display the Environmental Certifi cation Scheme (ECS) label. For more information visit www.carpetinstitute.com.au/environment/

Q Where can I get a sample piece of carpet?

A You can borrow books of carpet from your nearest carpet retailer. Use these to see what colours and styles of carpet work best for your space. Some carpet retailers have large drapes that you may borrow. These are larger pieces of carpet to give you an idea on how the carpet will look in your home. To see how the carpet will look in all light situations, keep the carpet sample for 24 hours and move it to different areas of your room during this time.
