Welcome from the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders

The Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders welcomes you to the Atrium Art Gallery and the hundreds of pieces it contains on a rotating basis.

Designed to fill the need in Morris County for a location for artists to exhibit their work, the gallery offers four floors of atrium and lobby space for exhibition in the County of Morris Administration and Records Building located on Court Street in Morristown.

The exhibitions have been viewed by hundreds of residents. Indicative of the support the Gallery has received from artists in Morris County and throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, is the long list of advance bookings and ongoing requests to exhibit.

The Art Gallery started in 1977 in a small waiting room in the former County Administration Building, now the Courthouse Annex. In this room, the Morris County Heritage Commission held numerous small exhibitions of paintings, prints and photographs by well-known New Jersey artists. The Heritage Commission continues to contribute artwork to the Atrium Art Gallery.

In January 2008, at the request of the County, the Arts Council of the Morris Area assumed oversight for planning exhibitions at the Atrium Gallery.

As you walk through the corridors viewing the artwork, the Board of Chosen Freeholders is certain you will enjoy the exhibition and be enriched by its contents.

William Chegwidden, Freeholder Director

The Arts Council of the Morris Area is a private, nonprofit agency established in 1973 dedicated to transforming lives through the arts, bringing the arts to the center of community life, promoting excellence in the arts and enhancing the quality of life in the Morris area. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts has consistently awarded the Arts Council its prestigious "Citation of Excellence" and designated it as a "Major Service Organization” in recognition of the Arts Council's “solid history of service excellence, substantial activity, and broad public service.”

MARK and MARIA DE MOS 2nd Floor Hallway September 22, 2011-January 13, 2012

Mark de Mos (son):

Over the years Mark has worked in pen & ink, etching, watercolor and pastel. Working in pen and ink during his high school years, and graduating from the New Jersey institute of Technology, Mark continued his studies in art with many well -known artists. His formative teachers were Robert Sakson, Ed Havas, Ferd Petrie, Lee Hughes (watercolor) and Frank Zuccarelli, PSA (pastel), and recently include George James, AWS, working on Yupo paper. His work is influenced by John Singer Sargent, and he strives for a dynamic realism that is painterly and not photo realistic.

Mark is a signature member of The New Jersey Watercolor Society; The Garden State Watercolor Society; Baltimore Watercolor Society; North East Watercolor Society. He has appeared as a juror of selection for both the North East Watercolor Society and the New Jersey Watercolor Society, and has received six awards from these four organizations. Mark’s work has also appeared in two “Best of Watercolor” books put out by North Light Press, Splash 8 and Splash 9. In the August 2007 issue of Watercolor Magic, Mark's unique talent with watercolor was highlighted in a six page article.

He has participated in nationally juried shows with the Salmagundi Club, Non-Member Show (Pastel Society of America Plaque and Watercolor Award of Excellence), Hudson Valley Art Association, Audubon Artists of America, and the Allied Artists of America (Jane Peterson Memorial Award). Many other awards include three juror’s awards from the Perkins Center for the Arts Watercolor Show, two Best in Shows from the Roxbury Art Association, numerous awards from the Essex Watercolor Society, plus many awards from various outdoor art exhibits around New Jersey. He has had several one man shows, and is in numerous collections across the country and abroad including former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean.

In 2005 he helped found the Pastel Society of New Jersey, of which he is the current President. Mark can be found teaching watercolor and pastel at the Somerset Art Association, Livingston Art Association and Lakeland Arts in Denville.

MARK and MARIA DE MOS 2nd Floor Hallway September 22, 2011-January 13, 2012

" Maria, known as Mieke to her friends, first discovered watercolor, while growing up on Sumatra, Dutch East Indies(now Indonesia). World War II cut short her studies and her entire family was confined in internment camps for 3½ years. Mieke kept a diary and painted watercolors of camp life, many were included in a self-published diary of a camp mate. After the war she returned to Holland and met Minnekus (Mike). They married and moved to Canada in 1952 and the states in 1958. They had 3 sons. She took up watercolor again in 1974 soon after Mike and her son Paul passed away. Art story: She believes in painting beauty, not her nightmares. Initially she specialized in florals due to her love of gardening, but couldn't resist the urge to paint the landscape around her. Her formative teachers were Nicolas Reale, Gladys Russell (watercolor) & Frank Zuccarelli (pastel) and continues to study with artists she respects, because she's always trying to improve. She put her stamp on a local art association by bringing exceptional artists to teach (including F. Zuccarelli and Ted Minchin). She has worked in many genres, florals, landscapes and for a while she focused on abstracts! which got her in shows with the Salmagundi Club (NYC), New Jersey, North East (CT), Baltimore and Garden State Watercolor Societies, winning awards with the North East(CT) and Baltimore(MD) Watercolor Societies. She teaches watercolor at her studio. Currently she is revisiting her favorite, flowers.

DAVID DERR 2nd Floor Elevator Lobby September 22, 2011-January 13, 2012

L-R: David Derr’s oil paintings: Testing the Waters: Dreams and Promises; Firedance

Humanity is composed of creative explorers and symbol makers. We have been this way since the beginnings of our existence as a race and before. This is the cornerstone of what it is to be a thinking human being. My goal has always been to create works that contain the essences of good poetry. A balance of opposites, in a style that is recognizable, yet not necessarily realistic. I find the most effective way of doing this is by using a pseudo primitive style which on the surface seems simple, but in reality resonates deeper emotions. My studies of children's and primitive art, as well as symbols, have led me to the conclusion that these types of images speak on a deeper level that completely realistic images. Somehow they reach beyond the surface and touch the very essence of the object represented evoking meanings and emotions the reside deep in our minds and bodies. The use of this type of content allows me to create pieces that contain layers of meaning, meaning which is integral to lasting art.

Content is very important, and by content I don’t mean the objects in a painting but the meaning behind them. I fill each piece with subjects form music, dance, myths, mysticism, science and everyday life. I create pieces that will have the ability to have a lasting conversation with the collector and the public. A conversation that can take different and unexpected directions from my original intention. Do my works tell a story....yes, but I will never completely know or be able to tell what that story is, for when a work leaves my hand it takes on a life of its own, creating a conversation that is between it and the viewer, each of which brings their own mysteries. 1 4 2 E LM S TRE E T · DOVER, NJ 0 7 8 0 1 · P : 9 7 3 4 4 2 8 3 0 0 · F : 9 7 3 4 4 2 8 3 0 5

Wild New Jersey

Photographs by Danielle Austen and Dawn Benko

New Jersey photographers, Danielle Austen and Dawn Benko, first worked together while they were on the staff at the Daily Record newspaper in Morris County. In recent years, both have individually been pursuing the world of fine art photography, specifically nature. Danielle’s work is more focused in central New Jersey while Dawn’s is concentrated in the northern part of the state. Individually, they seek to document an unexpected view of the landscape and its wild inhabitants. Their joint show focuses on the natural state of New Jersey; scenics, wildlife and environment. Danielle Austen is an award winning professional photographer based in Hillsborough, Somerset County, who specializes in editorial, portrait and fine art photography in a documentary style. Danielle was trained in the traditional fine arts of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography where she received her BFA from Cornell University. She worked as a graphic designer for seven years before attending the master’s program at Syracuse University, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, in photojournalism. Working for newspapers and magazines, she has been published locally, regionally and nationally, including the 2002 issue of “Life’s, The Year in Pictures,” and has participated in more than 18 national juried exhibits since 2008. Her passion for travel, the outdoors and adventure — hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing, and scuba diving — has contributed to her love and respect for nature and the environment. 908.698.9483 [email protected] www.danielleausten.com

Dawn Benko is an award winning photographer based in Montague, Sussex County, who specializes in editorial, sports, and fine art nature photography. Her passion for capturing “the moment” has seen her through an A.S. degree in photographic technology at Florida Institute of Technology and a twenty-three-year photojournalism career in her native New Jersey. In 2007, she began in earnest to pursue her true passion — nature and wildlife photography. Dawn has driven thousands of miles across the Midwest, chronicling tornadoes and violent thunderstorms. She has taken her camera 250 feet under the earth, photographing a New York State caving expedition in complete darkness and up into the mountains of the Delaware Water Gap, where she took pictures while dangling from a rock climbing rope. While helping in relief efforts in Haiti and post-Katrina Louisiana, she has photographed life in both locations and recently returned from a trip to South Africa, where she helped install a water pump at the Sokhela Primary School. 862.354.2497 [email protected] www.dawnbenko.com

JOHN TETZ Open Stairwell Area, Floors 2-5 September 22, 2011 –January 13, 2012

Atrium Stairwell area with Tetz’s Feather Pieces

Artist’s Statement My three dimensional Letter O pieces work together with the buildings architecture. The alcoves, corners, and odd shapes essentially frame my pieces while my pieces bring attention to the architecture that ordinarily may go unnoticed. The eye sees both which can be considered a field of view - field of view rather than frame. Frame seems more enclosed – a singular point of view. Field of view is more open, and dynamically changes as the viewer changes their position. The experience becomes more than just visual but includes a physical sense. This physicality can be felt by looking up at my piece from lower floors, alongside, and by looking down from above. John is exhibiting several of his “feather pieces” in this exhibit….all based on the letter “o”. Visit him at http://www.recumbents.com/mars/projects.html. He can also be reached by email at [email protected].

Ann Winston Brown combines painting and printmaking and “builds up layers of impressions, emotions and memories.”

Dail Fried is inspired by topography and ruins and captures the natural energy using line, form, color and texture.

Alice Harrison works in layers “technically, intellectually and spiritually to create images and sensations of movement, color, harmony and joy.”

Nancy Ego Nikkal creates painting and collages inspired by jazz music playing in the studio while she works. Color and abstraction convey the energy of the music.

Ellen Reinkraut’s paintings are about self-discovery and exploration of life’s mystery. She layers symbols, brushwork and color, scraping away what is not essential.

Valerie Lewis Mankoff strives to create art that incorporates beauty, personal experience and a meditative spirit. Her works integrate illustration, printed materials and images from art history.

Sandra Frech strives for spontaneity and uses the elements of color, line and texture to achieve an “expressionistic” style. Her work ranges from abstract to semi-representational and is inspired by nature and international travel.

Ruth Bauer Neustadter, a former modern dancer, “dances when she paints.” Most of her works break away from the traditional plane and become sculptural forms of the wall.

ISABELLA PIZZANO 5th Floor September 22, 2011-January 13, 2012

L-R: Isabelle Pizzano’s acrylic Next Door and collages, Meditation and Black Tulip.

Award-winning artist, Isabella Pizzano of ISAMARI STUDIO in Denville, NJ is expressing her passion through art that is in an innovative multimedia style emphasizing color and design. Her work is in an abstract expressionistic style and she uses different techniques, mostly using water media colors in addition to charcoal, pencil, and pastels. Her latest work includes collage using rare and exotic paper that comes from all over the world including Japan, India and Europe. She spends many hours of her studio time treating the raw material with a unique experimental technique with natural dyes. A member of various art associations as well as several art galleries in NYC, Pizzano’s main direction today is a passionate involvement in experimental art. “Each piece has its own individual character and personality! Imperfections, irregularities odd sizes are meant to be.” She doesn’t know where her intuitive approach will take her but she is “enjoying the ride.” Pizzano is actively involved with local organizations promoting “art as a healing process” and enjoys being part of the roundtable art critique at the Salmagundi Art Club in NYC. Her mission is present to the public new ideas in the art field. Her favorite quote is from Mark Twain: “you cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.”
