AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE INNOVATION NETWORK (AVIN)

The Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN) builds upon Ontario’s position as a world-leading automotive manufacturing and supply jurisdiction in addition to the large cluster of information and communication technology companies operating in the province. Ontario’s high-quality post-secondary institutions, first class talent, innovative small and medium sized enterprises and infrastructure to support entrepreneurship ensures that the province is uniquely-positioned to capture the economic opportunity of the connected and automated vehicle (C/AV) technology space and lead the global mobility evolution.

AREAS OF FOCUSAVIN’s four distinct programs focus on supporting the development and demonstration of C/AV technologies, including infrastructure, related to: commercially ready technologies for application in mass light vehicles (e.g., cars, trucks, and vans), heavy-duty vehicles (including commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, recreational vehicles (RVs) and others used for goods movement), transportation infrastructure, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and transit-supportive systems and vehicles in Ontario.

AVIN is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade (MEDJCT) and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and administered by OCE.

CENTRAL HUBThe AVIN Central Hub is a dedicated team that supports delivery and administration of AVIN programming, and provides the following key functions:

Connect & Coordinate – a focal point to help coordinate among industry, academia, research organizations and governments, and connect interested stakeholders and members of the public;

Opportunity Identification – knowledge translation, research, data/information and trend analysis, acting as a bridge between technology and policy; and,

Awareness & Education – promote AVIN programs and Ontario’s AV testing pilot, build awareness of Ontario’s growing C/AV community.

SME Value PropositionAVIN is vital to SMEs because it enables them to:

• Accelerate their time to market by providing support for product development and commercialization to access global markets

• Access to physical sites that capitalize on technology strengths in regional innovation incubators, accelerators, post-secondary institutions that can be used for the development of new products and solutions as well as to test and validate technologies.

• Access to specialized equipment, hardware and software that reduce barriers to innovation and commercialization

• Access business and technical advisory services to assist in the development and commercialization of technologies.

• Access to vehicle platforms (cars, municipal buses, etc.) to demonstrate technologies to potential customers including OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, transportation authorities, technology companies and infrastructure providers in safe and controlled real-world scenarios

• Access to talent in the form of current students and new graduates from Ontario’s post-secondary institutions

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network Talent Development (TalentEdge) stream provides students and recent graduates from Ontario colleges and universities with real-world industry experience, by applying their expertise, leading-edge knowledge and tools to solve industry problems related to Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (C/AV) technologies. Interns and fellows will work at Ontario-based companies or academic institutions and receive on-the-job training in areas such as software and hardware development, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

AVIN PROGRAMS

REGIONAL TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT SITES

PROGRAM OVERVIEWThe Regional Technology Development Sites include the creation of locations that enable entrepreneurs, start-ups, and SMEs to:

• develop, prototype, and validate new technologies

• access specialized equipment (hardware and software), and obtain business and technical advice

Each site will support the development of new technologies and will have a unique focus area:

• Durham Region – human-machine interface (HMI) and user experience.

• Hamilton – multimodal and integrated mobility.

• Ottawa – vehicular networks and communications.

• Southwestern Ontario – vehicle cybersecurity and cross-border technologies.

• Toronto – artificial intelligence for connected and autonomous vehicles

• Waterloo – 3D High Definition (HD) Mapping

DEMONSTRATION ZONE

PROGRAM OVERVIEWThe AVIN Demonstration Zone by APMA, located in Stratford ON, is a site where Ontario-based companies with connected vehicle, autonomous vehicle, transportion system and enabling infrastructure technologies can demonstrate and showcase innovative products to potential

customers and partners such as automotive suppliers manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in a controlled environment and in accordance with applicable

laws and regulations using vehicle platforms such as city buses, fleet vehicles, and vehicles.

The Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA) operate the Demonstration Zone on behalf of AVIN. The Demonstration Zone will position Ontario as a globally recognized C/AV and infrastructure jurisdiction.
