A près 1958 et son inauguration, 2006 et sa rénovation, il y aura donc dans l’histoire de l’Atomium

une autre date importante : décembre 2015 et son expansion artistique. Avec l’ouver-ture de l'art & design atomium museum | Plasticarium, nous dessinons le futur du bâtiment et sa prise d’ampleur, réaffirmant à travers la création d’un nouveau musée à Bruxelles sa place comme lieu de tou-risme culturel. Nouveau musée à Bruxelles, sauvetage d’une collection, ADAM ren-contre trois enjeux majeurs pour nous  : le développement d’une offre culturelle adaptée aux goûts et aux intérêts du public d’aujourd’hui, la consolidation de l’attrac-tivité du Plateau du Heysel, en synergie avec sa prochaine profonde transformation urbanistique et économique et enfin, la nécessité pour l’Atomium de créer et de maintenir une récurrence des visites de son public, par une diversification et un développement de son offre et de ses activités. C’est ce projet ambitieux, mais également l’ensemble des activités artis-tiques et culturelles de et à l’Atomium que cette deuxième édition de Spheres vous propose de découvrir. Avec l’étroit soutien de la fondation atomium qui est aussi l’un des éléments moteur du dynamisme des lieux, nous poursuivrons notre pro-grammation en architecture, design et art numérique. N a de inhuldiging in 1958 en de renovatie in 2006 schrijft het Atomium opnieuw geschiedenis

in december 2015. Dan opent het Art & Design Atomium Museum | Plasticarium. De toekomst van het gebouw wordt verder uitgetekend en zijn plaats als trekpleister voor cultureel toerisme wordt bevestigd. ADAM, een nieuw museum voor Brussel, betekent de redding van een collectie en komt tegemoet aan drie uitdagingen. Ten eerste gaat het om de ontwikkeling van een cultureel aanbod dat aangepast is aan de smaak en de interesses van het publiek van vandaag. Vervolgens draagt dit project bij tot de versterking van de aantrekkelijkheid van de Heizelvlakte, met het oog op haar nakende, diepgaande urbanistische en eco-nomische transformatie. Tenslotte is er de noodzaak om een publiek aan te trekken dat het Atomium regelmatig bezoekt, dankzij een diversifiëring en ontwikkeling van het aanbod en de activiteiten. Dit ambitieuze project en alle artistieke en culturele activi-teiten van en in het Atomium kan u ontdek-ken in deze tweede editie van spheres. Met de steun van de Stichting Atomium, die in grote mate bijdraagt tot de dynamiek van deze plek, bouwen we voort aan onze programmatie op het vlak van architec-tuur, design en digitale kunst. F ollowing its inauguration in 1958 and its renovation in 2006, there will be another important date in

the Atomium’s history : December 2015 will see its expansion as an artistic and tourist attraction. With the opening of the art & design atomium museum | Plasticarium, we are shaping the building’s future, ex-panding and consolidating it as a centre for cultural tourism by creating a new museum in Brussels. ADAM, a new museum for Brussels, ensures the preservation of a collection and engages with three different challenges facing us today. Firstly, it will form a cultural attraction to appeal to the tastes and interests of today’s public. Secondly, this project forms part of the ini-tiative to enhance the visual appeal of the Heysel Plateau in view of its forthcoming major urban and economic transformation. Lastly, it is important for the Atomium to establish and maintain its popularity as a tourist venue by diversifying and developing its attractions and activities. This second edition of Spheres brings you details of that ambitious project, as well as information about all the cultural and artistic activities organized and hosted by the Atomium. With the strong support of the atomium foundation, which is also one of the driving forces behind the Atomium’s dynamic initiatives, we will be pursuing our exhibition program in the fields of architecture, design and digital art. Ce sera le début d’une longue collaboration avec cet édifice singulier, emblème d’un pays qui l’est tout autant. »

In 2011 maakt Visual system (VS) kennis met het Atomium tijdens zijn deelname aan de tentoonstelling Cosmos. Na deze tentoonstelling stelt het Atomium ons voor deze installatie te verplaatsen om ze blijvend te maken onder de naam Transit. Het wordt het begin van een lange samenwerking met dit bijzondere bouwwerk dat het embleem is van een even bijzonder land. »

Visual system (VS) first became associated with the Atomium in 2011, when we took part in the Cosmos exhibition. Following that event, the Atomium suggested moving the

installation to establish it as a permanent exhibition entitled Transit. This was to mark the start of a long partnership with that remarkable construction,

the symbol of a country which is no less unique. »

L’EXPERIENCE VISUAL SYSTEM A L’ATOMIUM

d ès 2013, VS intègre le rendez-vous numérique estival de l’Atomium ID [Innovative Display] avec l’installation Infinity et en 2014, fort de cette première expérience,

Out Of Control. Ces installations lumineuses et audio-réactives prennent un sens particulier dans ce lieu originellement futuriste qu’est l’Atomium. Nous y avons apprivoisé ses espaces incroyables, son acier omniprésent et ses nombreuses marches. Nous avons arpenté ses différents recoins, appréhendé l’échelle de ses espaces, mesuré ses poutres et poutrelles maintes et maintes fois. Travailler dans et avec un édifice aussi particulier est un immense privilège. Cette intimité avec les lieux nous a permis d’en tirer le meilleur lors de notre dernier projet.

En effet, Out Of Control est, parmi nos récents travaux, un des plus aboutis car cette installation est le fruit d’une totale ‘carte blanche’. L’Atomium nous a confié la réalisation d’une exposition en nous laissant totalement libre dans notre création. Cela est assez rare pour être salué d’autant plus que cela nous a permis d’aller au bout de nos idées. Nous avons alors décidé de collaborer avec Thomas Vaquié, compositeur et Stéphane Beauverger, écrivain afin d’optimiser le rendu sonore et l’histoire que nous comptions raconter. Out Of Control est une sculpture lumineuse et audio-réactive immersive qui raconte le conflit que se livrent deux intelligences artificielles. Cet espace futuriste qu’est l’inté-rieur d’une boule était l’écrin idéal pour figurer un tel projet artistique d’anticipation.

Le retour d’expérience du public a aussi été très instructif, certaines visiteurs ont même recommencé plusieurs fois le parcours pour revivre l’expérience. L’Atomium a aussi ce pouvoir d’attirer un public nombreux et d’apporter une très grande visibilité sur l’approche artistique de notre travail.

Sur le plan humain, ce projet a été très enrichissant, d’une part à l’intérieur du groupe VS, où chacun a pu exploiter ses compétences au maximum et d’autre part avec l’ensemble du personnel de l’Atomium notamment avec la direction technique pour le mon-tage et avec le personnel de médiation pendant l’exploitation.

Visual System n’a pas encore 10 ans mais a écrit une part non négligeable de son histoire en Belgique, à Bruxelles, dans cet Atomium construit en 1958... Ø

DE ERVARING VAN VISUAL SYSTEM IN HET ATOMIUM

i n 2013 werkt VS mee aan het zomerse festival voor digitale kunst van het Atomium, ID [Innovative Display], met de installatie Infinity. De ervaring krijgt in 2014 een vervolg

met Out Of Control. Deze licht- en audioreactieve installaties krijgen een extra betekenis in het futuristische decor van het Atomium. We hebben gretig gebruikgemaakt van de ongelooflijke ruimten, het alomtegenwoordige staal en de talrijke treden. We hebben alle hoeken en kanten verkend, de verhoudingen van de ruimten geschat, vele keren de balken en liggertjes gemeten. Werken in en met zo’n bijzonder bouwwerk is een immens privi-lege. Zo intiem om te gaan met deze ruimten maakte het voor ons mogelijk er het beste uit te halen tijdens ons laatste project.

Out Of Control is inderdaad één van onze meest geslaagde recente werken, het resultaat van een totale ‘carte blanche’. Het Atomium heeft ons de creatie van een tentoonstelling toever-trouwd en ons daarbij volledig vrij gelaten. Dat is zeldzaam genoeg om onderstreept te worden; het liet ons toe zo ver mogelijk te gaan met onze ideeën. We besloten samen te werken met componist Thomas Vaquié en schrijver Stéphane Beauverger om de klankband en het verhaal dat we wilden vertellen te optimaliseren. Out Of Control is een licht- en audioreactieve sculptuur waarin je wordt ondergedompeld en die vertelt over het conflict tussen twee artificiële intelligenties. De futuristische ruimte van een bol van het Atomium was het ideale kader voor dit artistieke Sci-Fi project.

De reacties van het publiek waren eveneens heel leerrijk; sommige bezoekers hebben het parcours zelfs meerdere keren helemaal overgedaan om de ervaring nog eens te beleven. Het Atomium heeft de kracht om een talrijk publiek aan te trekken en een heel grote zichtbaarheid te bezorgen aan de artistieke aanpak van ons werk.

Menselijk gezien was dit een heel verrijkend project, enerzijds binnen de groep VS, waar iedereen zijn vaardigheden maximaal heeft kunnen ontplooien, en anderzijds in de samenwerking met het personeel van het Atomium, de technische directie en het personeel verantwoordelijk voor het educatieve gedeelte.

Visual System is nog geen 10 jaar oud maar heeft al een mooi deel van zijn geschiedenis geschreven in België, in Brussel, in dit Atomium dat gebouwd werd in 1958... Ø

THE VISUAL SYSTEM EXPERIENCE AT THE ATOMIUM

i n 2013, VS took part in the Atomium’s annual summer digital arts festival ID [Innovative Display] with its installa-tion Infinity, and following that successful début, presented

Out of Control in 2014. Built as a futuristic structure, the Atomium makes an ideal setting for these audio-reactive light installations. We appropriated those amazing spaces with their numerous flights of steps and the ubiquitous presence of steel, surveying its various recesses, noting the size of its spaces, measuring and re-measuring its girders both small and large. It is a very great privilege to work in and with such an extraordinary construction. This close familiarity with the site enabled us to get the very best from our latest project.

Out of Control is in fact one of the biggest success stories among our recent creations, as we were given a completely carte blanche rein with the installation. The Atomium invited us to put on an exhibition and gave us total creative freedom. This is a rare privilege indeed, particularly as it enabled us to push our ideas to the limit. We therefore decided to collaborate with the composer Thomas Vaquié and the writer Stéphane Beauverger, in order to maximise the impact of the sound effects and the story we planned to tell. Out of Control is an immersive, luminous, audio-reactive sculpture which tells the story of a conflict between two forms of artificial intelligence. The futuristic space inside one of the Atomium’s steel spheres makes the perfect setting for this type of artistic sci-fi project.

Feedback from the public has also been very revealing, with some people even repeating the entire visit several times, in order to relive the experience. Moreover, as the Atomium at-tracts large numbers of visitors, our artistic approach received considerable publicity.

This has been a very rewarding project on a personal level, both within the VS group, as each member had the opportunity to maximise their creative gifts, and also through the partnership with the Atomium team, particularly the technical directors with regard to the installation of the exhibition and the educa-tional facilitator.

Visual System is not yet 10 years old, but a substantial part of its history has already been written in Belgium, in that Atomium built in Brussels in 1958! Ø

I nitié par l’Atomium, suite à l’acquisition de la collection du Plasticarium, l’Art & Design Ato-

mium Museum (ADAM) est un musée installé dans une partie du Brussels Inter-national Trade Mart et qui ouvrira ses portes dès décembre 2015. Envisagé comme une extension de l’Atomium et de son département Expositions, le projet constitue une étape importante pour l’Atomium et son développement dans les décennies à venir.

Sur près de 5.000 m², l’Art & Design Atomium Mu-seum est un musée où les années glorieuses

du plastique occuperont le devant de la scène, à côté de l’art et du design des

XXe et XXIe siècles. Constituée depuis la fin des années 1980, le Plasticarium

est cet ensemble singulier et unique au monde qui regroupe plusieurs cen-

taines d’objets en plastique allant du plus usuel à l’œuvre d’art. L’acquisition du Plasti-

carium et son intégration au sein de l’ambitieux projet qui est ADAM est le fruit d’une ren-

contre entre la vocation touristique, culturelle et pédagogique de l’Atomium et le souhait du

propriétaire de la collection qu’elle demeure cohé-rente et intègre un projet muséal à Bruxelles.

Des espaces ADAM seront également affectés aux expositions temporaires dédiées à l’art et au design du

XXe siècle et d’aujourd’hui. Actuellement à l’Atomium, les expositions consacrées au design moderniste et d’aujourd’hui

(telle la biennale Intersections. Belgian Design) ou à la création contemporaine (comme Artview) seront désormais proposées à

ADAM. L'Art & Design Atomium Museum est une extension du département Atomiumexpo, il intégrera donc les dynamiques et les synergies mises en place depuis 2009 par le centre d’Art de l’Atomium. Les collaborations avec des manifestations et festivals bruxellois comme Art Brussels, Europalia, Design September

seront maintenues et approfondies. Des collaborations avec MAD Brussels, la

Fondation Roi Baudouin et Vitra Museum sont en cours de finalisation. Ø

D ecember 2015 opent het Art & Design Atomium Museum (ADAM), een initiatief van het Atomium dat volgt op de verwerving van de collectie van het

Plasticarium. Het museum, dat wordt ondergebracht in een deel van de Brussels International Trade Mart, is opgevat als een verlengstuk van het Atomium en haar tentoonstellings-afdeling. Het project vormt een belangrijke etappe voor het Atomium en haar ontwikkeling in de komende decennia. ADAM zal de roemrijke jaren van het plastic in de kijker zetten op een oppervlakte van zo’n 5.000 m2, naast kunst en design van de 20ste en 21ste eeuw. Het Plasticarium, dat sinds eind ’80 werd samengesteld, is een in de wereld uniek geheel dat meer dan een duizend objecten in plastic telt, van gebruiksvoorwerpen tot kunstwerken. De verwerving van het Plasticarium en zijn inte-gratie in een zo ambitieus project als ADAM is te danken aan het samenvallen van de toeristische, culturele en pedagogische roeping van het Atomium. En aan de eigenaar die wil dat de collectie een coherent geheel blijft en deel gaat uitmaken van een museaal project in Brussel. De tentoonstellingen gewijd aan modernistisch en hedendaags design (zoals de biënnale Intersections. Belgian Design) of aan hedendaagse kunst (zoals Artview) zullen voortaan in ADAM worden gehouden in plaats van in het Atomium. Het Art & Design Atomium Museum is een uitbreiding van de afdeling Atomium-expo, het sluit aan bij de dynamiek en de synergiën die sinds 2009 door het Kunstencentrum van het Atomium werden ontwikkeld. De samenwerkingen met Brusselse evenementen en festivals zoals Art Brussels, Europalia en Brussels Design

September blijven behouden en worden verder uitgediept. Andere zoals met MAD Brussels, de Koning Boudewijnstichting en het Vitra Museum staan in de steigers. Ø 

E stablished in the late 1980s, the Plasticarium is an ex-traordinary collection, the only one of its kind in the world. It comprises over a thousand plastic objects,

from the most commonplace items to works of art. With the acquisition of the Plasticarium and its integration into the ambitious ADAM project, the Atomium’s role as a tourist at-traction and a cultural and educational centre perfectly fits with the owner’s wish to preserve the unity of his collection through its inclusion in a new museum planned for Brussels.

Currently held at the Atomium, exhibitions devoted to modernist

and contemporary design (such as the biennial Intersections.

Belgian Design) or to con-temporary art (like Artview)

will henceforth be hosted by ADAM. As the Art &

Design Atomium is an extension of the Atomiumexpo department, it will have the same dynamics and synergy established by the Atomium’s Art Centre in 2009.

Collaborations with special events and festivals in Brussels such as Art Brussels, Europalia and Brussels Design September, will be main-tained and developed. Other partnerships, for example with MAD Brussels, the King Baudouin Foundation and Vitra Museum, are currently being finalized. Ø

S uite à une rencontre fortuite dans une brasserie bruxelloise, Henri Simons, directeur de l’Atomium, m’a proposé de montrer la collection du Plasticarium dans le symbole

de l’Expo 58, début de la plus belle partie des trente glorieuses, ma jeunesse, période où la Belgique récoltait les fruits du travail de reconstruction d’après la guerre 1940-1945. Ainsi est née l’exposition « Orange Dreams ». Du plaisir des membres de l’équipe à monter ces rêves et du fait que sans enfant, je préférais garder le témoignage d’une époque à travers mon regard plutôt que de dissiper l’ensemble à travers des ventes publiques, j’ai eu l’heu-reuse reconnaissance que l’Atomium s’adjoigne un musée. Dans ce projet, l'Art & Design Atomium Museum, le Plasticarium qui en constituera la collection permanente, trouvera l’écrin néces-saire pour sa découverte par le plus grand nombre. Le succès du futur musée sera lié à l’étonnement maintenu du public, l’enchantement d’une programmation liée au plaisir des yeux, la découverte de la modernité en marche, l’ingéniosité des chercheurs, des designers et surtout des artistes. Ø

N a een toevallige ontmoeting in een Brusselse brasserie stelde Henri Simons, directeur van het Atomium, me voor de

collectie van het Plasticarium te tonen in hét symbool van Expo 58. Het begin van het mooiste deel van de dertig glorieuze jaren, mijn jeugd, de periode waarin België de vruchten plukte van de wederopbouw na de oorlog 1940-1945. De tentoon-stelling ‘Orange Dreams’ is het resultaat. De ploeg had veel plezier met deze dromen in scène te zetten. En ik wilde vermijden dat de collectie via openbare verkopen uiteen zou vallen, omdat ik kinderloos ben. Zo groeide het idee voor een nieuw museum van het Atomium. Een prachtige erkenning. Dankzij dit project, het Art & Design Atomium Museum, krijgt het Plasticarium, dat er de permanente collectie van zal uitmaken, het ideale kader om door het grote publiek te worden ontdekt. De bedoeling is dat publiek te blijven verbazen, en het te trakteren op een programmatie die gericht is op kijkplezier, op de ontdekking van de moderniteit van toen en nu, en op de kennismaking met de vindingrijkheid van onderzoekers, designers en vooral kunstenaars. Ø

F ollowing my fortuitous encounter in a Brussels brasserie with Henri Simons, the Director of the Atomium, suggested

holding an exhibition of the Plasticarium collection inside that iconic symbol of Expo ’58. That year marked the start of the most dazzling days of those thirty glorious years between 1945 and 1975. It was the time of my youth, a period when Belgium was enjoying the fruits of the reconstruction work carried out after the Second World War. This is how the “Orange Dreams” exhibition was born. I was delighted and gratified to see the Atomium developing a museum; the team members enjoyed creating the displays for these dreams and, having no children, I preferred to keep this record of an era as seen through my eyes rather than have the collection dispersed and sold. The Plasticarium will form the permanent collection of the Art & Design Atomium Museum project, through which it will have the setting it needs to welcome large numbers of visitors. The success of the future museum will involve enthralling the public with wonderful exhibitions to delight the eye, revealing the progress of the modern world and the ingenuity of researchers, designers, and above all, artists. Ø

S ymbole de l’architecture moderniste à la forme interpellante, l’Atomium intrigue. Haut lieu du tourisme bruxellois, le bâtiment est, depuis sa rénovation terminée en 2006, un centre d’art dédié à la création contemporaine en architecture et design.

Au printemps 2014 dans le cadre d’ARTVIEW (www.atomium.be/artview2), son rendez-vous annuel avec l’art contemporain, l’Atomium a invité l’artiste israélien Arik Levy à investir l’espace public autour de l’Atomium. Avec la réalisation d’une sculpture originale, le RockGrowth Atomium (RGA), Arik Levy ouvre un dialogue entre une proposition artistique d’aujourd’hui et cette icône de progrès qu’est l’Atomium. Ø

i ncarnation des notions de progrès et d’innovation qui étaient à la base de l’Expo’58 : l’Atomium relance perpétuellement la question de la modernité. [moderniste ou contemporain] et les arts plastiques sont mis en scène dans ce bâtiment qui, en plus d’être le plus visité de Belgique, s’impose de plus en plus comme un pôle culturel dans le Nord de la ville. L’approche, à la fois ludique et didactique, contentera tous les publics, qu’il soit novice ou averti, belge ou étranger. Ø

L’ATOMIUM EN 2015

L ’Atomium, symbole de l’Exposition 1958, symbole de l’avancement des recherches de cette époque sur les

molécules, l’atome et l’infiniment petit, sym-bole du savoir-faire des ouvriers et cadres, symbole de la prospérité de la Belgique après la deuxième guerre mondiale, … Aujourd’hui, le monde a changé mais le génie de mon père, André Waterkeyn, à l’époque reste parfaitement d’actualité. En 2015, l’Atomium est le symbole d’une Bel-gique qui avance, encore à la pointe de la recherche scientifique sur l’infiniment petit (Prigogine, Englert, …), une Belgique toujours prospère et symbole aussi de notre grand savoir-faire et de l’union entre tous les Belges. En nous retournant sur ce passé qui n’est pas si lointain, nous, les enfants d’André Waterkeyn, pouvons rester fiers de la symbolique éternelle de ce magnifique monument, preuve que les hommes savent se dépasser pour des idéaux ou par leur génie et laisser aux générations futures non pas l’image d’eux-mêmes mais, comme dans un miroir géant, l’image de leur pays à travers les temps. Ø

H et Atomium, symbool van Expo 58, symbool van de vooruitgang van het moleculair onderzoek,

het atoom en het oneindig kleine, symbool van de knowhow van de arbeiders en kader-leden, symbool van de welvaart van het België van na de tweede wereldoorlog... Vandaag is de wereld veranderd maar het genie van mijn vader, André Waterkeyn, heeft niets aan actualiteit ingeboet. Ook in 2015 blijft het Atomium het symbool van een België dat vooruitgaat, en nog steeds vooroploopt in het wetenschappelijk onder-zoek naar het oneindig kleine (Prigogine, Englert...), een België dat nog steeds welva-rend is en de eenheid tussen alle Belgen benadrukt. Terugkijkend naar dat niet zo verre verleden, kunnen wij, de kinderen van André Waterkeyn, trots blijven op de eeu-wige symboliek van dit prachtige monu-ment. Het bewijs dat mensen zich kunnen overtreffen voor hun idealen of dankzij hun genie, en aan de latere generaties geen beeld van zichzelf nalaten, maar, als in een reuzespiegel, het beeld van hun land doorheen de tijden. Ø

t he Atomium is the symbol of the 1958 World Exhibition, and of pro-gress then being made in research

into molecules, atoms and the infinitely small; it is also a symbol of the expertise of both workers and managers, and of the prosperity that Belgium enjoyed after the Second World War. The world has changed since then, but my father’s genius remains cutting-edge today. In 2015, the Atomium is the symbol of Belgium, a country which is moving forward, still at the forefront of scientific research into infinitely small structures (Prigogine, Englert…) a Belgium that is still prosperous and also a symbol of our great expertise and of the bond uniting all Belgians. Returning to that not-so-distant past, we, the children of André Waterkeyn, can be proud of the eternal symbolic signifi-cance of this magnificent monument. It stands as proof that humankind can surpass itself for the sake of ideals or through its genius, leaving future generations the image, not of themselves, but of their country through the ages, as if reflected in a giant mirror. Ø

F ondé en 1989 par Vitra et son propriétaire Rolf Fehlbaum, le Vitra Design Museum compte

parmi les principaux musées du monde consacrés au design. Ce musée est dédié à la recherche et la valorisation du design d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Il s’intéresse égale-ment aux relations entre le design, l’ar-chitecture, l’art et la culture au quotidien. En 1996, le Vitra Design Museum lançait ses conférences annuelles, le MUSCON. Il s’agit d’un réseau de musées qui a depuis réuni plus de 200 institutions et contribué de manière significative à une intensifica-tion des échanges d’expositions parmi les plus grands musées en Europe, Amérique et Asie.

Le Muscon a déjà été accueilli par de nombreux partenaires dont le Victoria and Albert Museum à Londres, le National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design à Oslo, le Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen à Rotterdam, le Taipei Museum of Fine Arts ou encore le Powerhouse Museum de Sydney. En novembre 2012, l’Atomium prenait part pour la première fois au Muscon et l’année suivante, il accueillait cette rencontre. Depuis lors, l’équipe de l’Atomium prend régulièrement part à notre réseau et y partage ses objectifs et ses ambitions. L’Atomium, symbole touris-

tique de Bruxelles, y expose sa volonté de développer un centre d’art dédié au design, à l’architecture et aux arts numériques. Aujourd’hui, l’Atomium s’investit dans un nouveau et ambitieux projet dont il a ex-posé les bases en octobre dernier, lors de sa participation au Muscon qui se tenait au Vitra Design Museum. L’Atomium nous a alors annoncé l’ouverture prochaine de l'Art & Design Atomium Museum (ADAM) dans la capitale de l’Europe.

Initier et développer un nouveau musée est une aventure enthousiasmante et ambi-tieuse. Le Vitra Design Museum est ravi d’assister à la naissance d’un tel projet, dédié à cette passion que nous avons en commun avec l’Atomium et bientôt ADAM pour le design, l’architecture et la création contemporaine. Nous espérons dans le futur initier des collaborations avec ce nouveau musée et réservons déjà notre mois de décembre prochain pour venir fêter avec eux l’ouverture ADAM. Ø

gerekend tot een van de leidinggevende designmusea wereldwijd. Het museum is gewijd aan het onderzoek en de presenta-

tie van design, in het verleden en vandaag. Het bestudeert de link tussen design en architectuur, kunst en alledaagse cultuur. In 1996 lanceerden we een jaarlijkse museum-conferentie genaamd MUSCON. Een mu-seumnetwerk dat sindsdien meer dan 200 instellingen heeft samengebracht. Dit net-werk heeft in grote mate bijgedragen tot de toegenomen uitwisseling van tentoonstel-lingen in de grootste musea in Europa, Amerika en Azië.

Sinds-dien netwerkt het Atomium team regelmatig met onze leden. Het Atomium deelt haar ambities en haar strategie om van een landmark en toeristische attractie te evolu-eren naar een origineel kunstencentrum gewijd aan design, architectuur en visuele kunsten. Het Atomium ontwikkelt nu een nieuw project dat werd aangekondigd in oktober 2014 tijdens de MUSCON confe-rentie in het Vitra Design Museum: de

opening van het Art & Design Atomium Mu-seum (ADAM) in de hoofdstad van Europa.

Een nieuw museum ontwerpen, bouwen en structureren is een opwindend en uitdagend avontuur. Het Vitra Design Museum is blij om getuige te mogen zijn van de groei van dergelijk project. Een project dat onze pas-sie voor design en architectuur deelt. Wij kijken uit naar verdere samenwerkingen en we noteren de datum voor de festiviteiten bij de opening in december 2015. Ø

F ounded in 1989 by the company Vitra and its owner, the Vitra Design Museum numbers among

the world’s leading museums of design. It is dedicated to the research and presenta-tion of design, past and present, and exam-ines design’s relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. In 1996, we launched the annual museum conference called MUSCON: a network of museums which has since brought together more than 200 institutions and contributed

significantly to an intensified exchange of exhibitions among leading museums in Europe, America and Asia.

The hosting partners have included London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Tapei

Museum of Fine Arts and the Powerhouse Museum Sydney. In November 2012, the Atomium in Brussels took part in the MUSCON conference for the first time and just one year later, it served as its host. Designing, building and structuring a new museum is an exciting and challenging adventure. The Vitra Design Museum is thrilled to witness the growth of such a project, one dedicated to our common passion for design and architecture. E n lien avec Art Brussels, l’Atomium Expo propose depuis 2014 une ex-position éphémère au lauréat du

concours de l’année précédente, dans une des boules lors du vernissage d’ARTVIEW. Art’contest (asbl), créé en 2005, est le concours annuel d’art contemporain de référence pour les jeunes artistes belges ou résidant en Belgique, âgés de 35 ans maxi-mum. Cette manifestation à l’initiative de Valérie Boucher a pour vocation de révéler, de suivre et d’accompagner le travail des jeunes artistes contemporains sur le long terme. Sa philosophie consiste à contribuer à leur évolution et à favoriser la réflexion de leurs pratiques et de leurs positions en tant qu’artistes dans la société d’aujourd’hui. Art’contest permet ainsi aux artistes, notam-ment à travers des échanges interculturels, de refléter la spécificité et le rôle de leur engagement dans l’art. Ø

I n samenwerking met Art Brussels bedenkt Atomium Expo sinds 2014 de laureaat van de wedstrijd van het

vorige jaar met een kortstondige tentoon-stelling in een van de bollen tijdens de vernissage van ARTVIEW. Art'contest (vzw), opgericht in 2005, is de jaarlijkse wedstrijd voor toonaangevende heden-daagse kunst van jonge Belgische of in België verblijvende kunstenaars van maxi-mum 35 jaar. Dit evenement op initiatief van Valérie Boucher stelt zich tot doel kunstenaars te introduceren en hen op lange termijn te volgen en te begeleiden. Het wil een bijdrage leveren aan de evolutie van deze kunstenaars en de reflectie rond hun werk en hun positie als kunstenaars in de samenleving van vandaag bevorderen. Art'contest geeft de kunstenaars op die manier de gelegenheid, met name via in-terculturele uitwisselingen, de specificiteit en de rol van hun engagement in de kunst te tonen. Ø

S ince 2014 and in connection with Art Brussels, a partnership has been established between the

Atomium Expo and Art’contest, offering the first prize winner of the contest a one-day expo in one of the spheres during the ARTVIEW opening. Art’contest was founded in 2005. It is the annual contem-porary art contest serving as a point of reference to young artists up to 35 years of age and living in Belgium. This con-test, under the inspiring leadership of its director Valérie Boucher who is herself closely associated with the up-and-coming talent in the world of art, aims at promoting the work of young, contem-porary artists as well as providing them with guidance and support in their future careers. The mission of Art‘contest is to contribute to the development of young artists and to stimulate the reflection on their artistic practices and positions in present-day society. Ø
