  • Welcome November 6, 2012 Welcome to the Academy of Teaching and Learning Excellence (ATLE) Style Guide. The purpose for creating this guide is to assist present and future graduate assistants in creating the different types of documents the ATLE produces. It is with great expectation this guide will provide the groundwork for establishing consistency in format and style. In todays fast-paced world of technology, in-house style guides are created to maintain an organizations unique voice as they communicate their message to the public and/or to other members within its organization. It is our intention that this style guide will provide a proper roadmap for incoming graduate students who have been selected to work for the ATLE. This style guide is considered to be version one (V.1), which was created on November 6, 2012. It will be the responsibility of incoming graduate assistants to update and maintain this guide, as necessary. A copy of this style guide will be provided on a CD for convenience in editing and updating in the future. Please make sure to save a copy of each updated version of the style guide. This will assist incoming graduate assistants in identifying the current version of the style guide. Two graduate students prepared this style guide for Dr. Cindy Nahrwolds Technical Style and Editing class during the 2012 fall semester. We sincerely wish you the best of luck and hope that the experience you acquire while working for the ATLE as a graduate assistant will help you with your career goals. Introduction The Academy of Learning and Teaching Excellence (ATLE) is a faculty organization interested in staging a rich conversation across disciplinary lines about pedagogical philosophy, teaching strategies, and the promotion of student learning. Founded in 2007, the ATLE has three co-directors, each serving various three-year terms. The mission of the ATLE is to foster excellence in teaching and learning, to demonstrate the value the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) places on high-quality teaching, and to build stronger community among teachers and students. There are many talented instructors at UALR who are doing fascinating educational things. As a way of honoring these outstanding efforts, each semester the ATLE sponsors teaching demonstrations, luncheons, book discussions, and other learning opportunities for UALR faculty and graduate students in teaching positions. These events provide a way for faculty and instructing graduate students to network and share information vital to the success of the university. The ATLE is dedicated to helping develop a more unified, engaged faculty where teaching is paramount and where faculty would grow from working and learning with one another. This style guide is a tool used to create a consistent form of communication. It was decided that this initial version would only focus on format for signatures, document design, and structure. At a later time, we would recommend additional stylistic themes, such as abbreviations, date formats, and web site formats, be addressed. This initial version should be used to aid the graduate assistants in editing and creating documents for the ATLE. If you have questions concerning the creation of new documents, please refer to the ATLE procedural files for step-by-step, how to instructions.

Document Design Signatures and Academic Titles In order to maintain a professional brand for the ATLE, it is important to include the proper titles in co-directors and graduate assistants signatures. Not only do titles and signatures serve to maintain a consistent format, but will also inform recipients who is providing the information. In following the directives of the UALR Branding Guidelines (beginning on page 15), the ATLE will follow the keep it simple mandate. Signature Guidelines:

Font - Calibri, size 10 No more than four lines Use pipe [shift + \] No graphics or colors No quotations or philosophical statements Example: John Doe | Director of University Policy

University of Arkansas at Little Rock | Office of the ATLE 501-555-5555 | [email protected] | www.ualr.edu Co-Directors Academic Titles The co-directors shall use their regular UALR signature, with the addition of Co-Director for the Academy of Teaching and Learning Excellence. ATLE Newsletter The ATLE produces a quarterly newsletter, which is distributed to all of its members. The ATLE newsletter is, by far, the most complicated design document the ATLE produces. While there are some things about this document that are static, the majority of the text changes from issue to issue. Its been decided by the ATLE graduate assistant staff to include general fonts and stylistic choices for this document, leaving room for alterations in size and format that are completely dependent on content. UALR Branding Guidelines Usage The UALR Brand website describes branding as an idea that people have about you and the perception people have when they think of UALR. The website further explains, a brand is also the promise of what UALR delivers to the people we serve. Branding is used to enhance the image of corporations, learning institutions, or organizations to the public. (Source: UALR Brand website: ualr.edu/communications/brand) Creating a brand includes the use of font types, creating a logo, and the use of colors. The use of font types, logo creation, and the use of colors are described in further detail in the paragraphs listed below. Font UALR requires that all communication use the Myriad Pro Regular font to display University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This also includes fonts within the Myriad Pro family. The font size should not be any smaller than 10 points. The point size can be adjusted for such things as headings or subheadings. Examples of the Myriad Pro Regular family are listed below.
